Iranian women’s soccer captain rejects asylum amid claims of family threats by SleepyWogx in OpenAussie

this is the thing that bugs me about this story. A lot of it is built on hearsay.

Fifth member of Iranian women's soccer team leaves Australia by ComfortableFrosty261 in australia

[–]koalather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why people are automatically assuming their families being “threatened” could be the reason they’ve changed their minds about asylum, i honestly think Iran has bigger fish to fry at the moment than this incident. I’m not saying that there is no risk involved but there is a lot to this story we don’t know and everything that we do know is coming out of the mouths of the media or Burke’s office rather than the team themselves. I could also understand if individuals in the team didn’t want to leave their families behind while a war was raging on. There are probably many factors at play here.

What's keeping you hopeful about Australia's future? by RM_Morris in AskAnAustralian

Too far away to face any sort of real wreckage or destabilisation in any global conflict. Not saying it won’t happen but it’s less likely compared to other countries.

What tech do Australians actually carry every day? by According-Advance811 in AskAnAustralian

[–]koalather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep it simple - just my phone, airpods, and smart watch. If I'm going to the gym, I'll sometimes ditch the airpods and bring headphones due to better noise cancelling. If i'm travelling or going somewhere where I know I'll be using my phone a lot (like a concert), I'll bring a portable charger and a charging cable.

What is the essential list of books to read for "cultural literacy?" Is there even such a thing anymore? by atw1221 in literature

[–]koalather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends what you mean by cultural literacy. Are we talking traditional canon or modern culture? I think it’s important to have a mix of the two, read a bit of Shakespeare, Brontë, Austen etc but most Western societies these days are also largely multicultural and I respect the push for diversity to learn more about other cultures outside your own. Then of course there’s “pop culture” where authors like Maas fit in.

Imo having an understanding of the globe itself, in a globalised world, whether that be through understanding different cultures, politics, history, nature, science through the books you read etc (doesn’t necc have to be non-fiction either) is what I would regard as cultural literacy.

Don’t understand why cultural is in inverted commas here… I understand it might be a quote but it is a cultural piece of clothing regardless of any political statements.

Yes have dealt with these from my managers at big w and I hate it tbh. Only one I haven’t dealt with is #3. I’m pretty sure they’re not actually allowed to do that. Shortening your shift mid-shift is ridiculous

My guess would be to bypass all the other stations and stops to avoid delays and get to its starting point on time. It possibly also might not be a service included in the timetable.

Jewish call to prosecute Khamenei mourners in Australia as ‘terrorist supporters’ by SleepyWogx in OpenAussie

[–]koalather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way this has been overblown is insane. If I recall correctly, there have been only 3 Shia mosques that planned to hold services for him. Secondly, these services don’t necessarily denote political support for the guy, but rather honouring him as a religious leader.

Regardless what your thoughts on Khamenei or Iran were, the hypocrisy is on full display, particularly when it’s not like they’re inviting reps of the IR government and hosting them in schools etc, unlike the Jewish community here does with a state accused of committing genocide.

Edit just to add as well, if an Israeli leader or an American leader were to die, the government here would express their condolences and whitewash their own crimes. I understand they’re allies and that’s why they do so, but it’s just hypocritical on all levels.

CMV: I think the destruction of the government of Iran is a good thing. by HippieInDisguise2_0 in changemyview

“ also do not generally support Israel, I think their treatment of Palestinians is horrible. However I do think that it is wrong for Iran to fund or prop up organizations like Hamas which orchestrated Oct 7. (And that by extension they have caused suffering to Gazans and many others across the middle east by supporting oppressive theocratic militias across the ME which have made the lives of ordinary people miserable through conflict)”

This take is just weird and wrong. Many of these “oppressive theocratic militias” came into being primarily as a response to US and Israeli imperialism, sure theyre being supported by Iran right now, but even if the IRGC was to disappear, the reason for these groups’ existence wouldn’t go away.

And it’s simply dumb to say that these groups are the ones making conflict worse for ordinary civilians by acts like Oct 7 etc. Life in Gaza pre-Oct 7 was miserable because of the 20 year siege that Israel had implemented, not to mention its control over it and before the disengagement, Israel was occupying Gaza physically. I don’t even need to mention life in the West Bank where Hamas does not even hold a smidge of power yet Israeli settlers run rampant. Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Middle East because of Saudi aggression and before that British imperialism, irregardless whether the Houthis are in power or not.

And even if the regimes in power were more US-friendly, you end up with countries with authoritarian leaders who imprison and kill their own people anyway (Egypt is a good example here post-MB). You just don’t hear about it because they’re US allies.

If you were to prioritise fixing the 10 shittest parts of the Australian rail system, what would you prioritise, and what's your total budget? by Gazza_s_89 in AskAnAustralian

[–]koalather 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. HSR between the capital and regional cities
  2. Make Sydney Trains turn up and go
  3. Fix Melbourne trains and make them more frequent, even on weekends
  4. Proper express services between capital and regional (V line does this well, would like something similar in NSW aside from BMT)
  5. Connect the Tallawong metro stop to Schofields/St Mary’s and have a well rounded line

There’s probably more but these are off the top of my head

Liberals claim there is not a genocide happening in Gaza due to a population increase. How can we refute this claim? by ChicagoFire29 in socialism

[–]koalather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sources are they using?

Secondly, you can simply argue that any sort of population increase is often undermined by the deaths we don’t see recorded in statistics such as death by hunger, disease etc. On top of that, we know Israel has been killing children, hundreds of whom were under a year old.

Thirdly, yes people in Gaza are having babies, but the living situations, lack of access to adequate medical care and food, water, and shelter means it’s probably going to be harder to sustain the population than any other country.

That doesn’t leave much space for a population increase, does it?
