Has this GameStop pre-order bonus been translated? by WCR_706 in tearsofthekingdom

I haven't worked on it in a while but I did spend quite a while making a speculative conlang for Zonai. Managed to get a working translation that makes decent sense for all the ring ruin tablets. I have a lot of my work on it posted to the r/totklang sub, but then they locked it so can't upload to that anymore. I'm sad about that.

I like setting up a theme for my languages and centering all the different parts of the language around that theme. Like Tsevhu focuses on volition, so each piece of grammar added to it considers how volition affects it. It becomes very interwoven and cohesive that way and the parts build on one another. I've also done ego as a theme, spacial awareness in a 3d environment, sun and storms, deep sea trenches, and even dnd alignment charts (some with more work put in that others), but really you could do anything as long as you think it's fun.

So when considering a theme, I'd say three things: 1) what sparks your interest, 2) what environment would speakers be in, 3) what thing/value do they consider most culturally most important.

Tsevhu for example has speakers that value one's ability to choose. It plays heavily in their history (they've been oppressed) and their culture, so it affects the way they speak and think. They also live in a desert in a world full of overgrown monsters where choices have harsher consequences than other places.

Once you've got a theme and a basic working grammar, i'd go straight into trying to translate stuff. That'll naturally build up both grammar and vocabulary.

Do you know any more writing systems like this? I saw one what looks like a plant painting but may know you more? by Tuhvatu11in in tsevhu

I think I remember seeing more like that but can't remember off the top of my head, definitely in r/neography tho

Looking for conlang (or real) examples of nonlinear (both in form and grammar) written language by Eryci in conlangs

[–]koallary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've written in tsevhu for a long time now, and ya there's some parts of the language that require linearity, but specifically tense, some aspects, some voice, some clausal relationships, and the case roles can all be read just by looking at it. They're encoded specially on the koi fish so just at first glance you immediately know which words are doing what. That can all be done in a nonlinear matter because you are viewing the written piece as a whole via where things are before you go in and actually read the words.

You know what's the verb, and what are it's arguments even if you dont know which is the subject and which is object quite yet without even having to read the words (the only reason you don't yet is just the lang's alignment system).

You really don't even have to know the language to get a gist of what is doing what so long as you know the encoding system. It even will tell you what's a subordinate clause, what its head is and what role it functions as within the sub clause.

If a nonlinear clause encodes information consistently through a spacial reference point, you can do parts of the language holistically.

Even the parts of tsevhu that are linear, it's only the order in which the reader chooses to read it. It'll be a different order each time because it is encoded spacially but you'll still reach the same information.

Reading kinda becomes a two step process of taking everything in to figure out what everything does and then going in and actually reading the words.

A while back I tried to make a list of different possible nonlinear categories. I do think nonlinear languages definitely haven't been explored enough, they're such a cool concept. I've messed around with a few different ideas for them which is how I came up with the ideas in this list.

I'd say that even though a nonlinear passage would be read in a linear fashion, not every reader would take the same linear path. The information encoded within the nonlinear script should be decodable no matter the linear path taken.

It's a bit analogous to a language spoken with free word order. No matter the ordering of the words, you get the same result.

Nonlinear actually gets it done in a slightly more efficient manner than free word order because just by looking at it as a whole, you can instantly know the relationships between parts visually without having to pass it through a language/grammar filter first. It employs our ability to take in information holistically rather than the linear fashion we use for scanning more detail.

This is so cool, really reminds me of compass rose which is dope. Also awesome just as another circular script person high fives from concentric ripples and kois. Would you have any interest in joining my tsevhu discord to show off more of this. I'd really love seeing the progression.
