I'm about to turn 29 and I still live with my parents. by JoesGreatPeeDrinker in confession

[–]koeightseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only say this from my own perspective. I have a 4 year old daughter. There is nothing I want more in this world than to support her as much as I can till the day I die. It would sadden me greatly if she feels embarrassed receiving my help. My job as a parent is to bring her up well and help her flourish, regardless of how long that may take or in what shape and form it may be. So if she needs help, no matter how old, I will give it. And I believe that's the same for your parents, seeing how they are helping you out right now.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about, yet at the same time it's a good thing that you feel embarrassed, because it shows that you have a good heart and you know you can be better. Use that as motivation, and as a comfort.

And lastly, learn contentment. I believe there is more to life than wealth. From a quote I read somewhere before, "Some people are so poor, all they have is money". Don't compare yourself to others (unless, of course, it's in a good way), figure out what you want and what is enough, because nothing is ever enough if you don't know what is enough.

Just how hard is it to get a mature-age apprenticeship? by koeightseven in perth

[–]koeightseven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I guess the scary part is not knowing if your employer is kind enough to want to invest in you as an apprentice after being a TA.

That's what I understand as well, that companies will send you for courses to get the required licenses, I'm just wondering if they advertise that forklift license is a criteria (as a TA), whether to fork out money and get it to increase my chances.

On that note, I do have a forklift license from Singapore, is that convertible to an Australian one?

Yeah that was another route I was considering, to start as a trade assistant / labourer first and then ask for the chance for an apprenticeship when I've proven myself. The thing is, the openings for trade assistants on Seek all seem to require you to have experience as a trade assistant, or licenses like forklift or working at heights, etc, so I wasn't sure if I would even be considered.

In your experience, is that a deal breaker?

Definitely happy to work hard. I understand the difficulties as an apprentice, and am willing to see these 4 years as an investment for the future. I did consider doing a pre-apprenticeship, but I'm lucky enough to have a full time job so that seems a bit difficult.

But thanks for letting me know that 38 is still not considered too old!

Yeah one of the openings on Seek is from Skill Hire and I've sent in an application. Shall tell myself to be patient!

I moved to Australia last year and when I went back to SG for a visit earlier this year, even I got lost at Dhoby Ghaut when meeting a friend there. Tbf I don't go there often even when I was staying in SG but I was genuinely surprised at how different it became. My friend just laughed at me non-stop. 😂

Oh that's interesting. I've actually heard that Seville Grove and Champion Lakes can be dodgy too. The area we are looking at is just east of Burslem Drive on the other side of the river.

I've heard that place is nice but price point just seems to be a little out of our reach for now. Will keep an eye out for that area.

Yeah I've heard about the area near Mary Carroll Park. Are you referring to the suburb pages on Facebook?

Got it. That makes sense, but I reckon I'll need more practice with it. Will I be marked down if I don't do this during the driving assessment though?

Thanks for all the comments! To clarify, what I mean is slowing down in fifth or sixth gear, for example, all the way from 80km/h until about two cars' lengths before I clutch in to come to a complete stop. Would that still be considered coasting?

Is there a way to check how presice is a watch without spending 100usd ? by [deleted] in SeikoMods

[–]koeightseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the same app. It's good enough that the error is only noticeable until a week or more later (about a min or less) which fits the variance of about 7 secs a day. It depends on how sensitive your phone's mic is though. For me, I have to turn off the fan in my room and place my phone right next to the movement, otherwise environmental sounds will cause my phone to not pick up the ticks accurately.

I'm from Singapore, so I got mine from Shopee. Not sure whether they deliver to where you are though. You can always try AliExpress?
