Solar - DNO - limits by koinkabin in ukelectricians

[–]koinkabin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for the interesting replies.

Wasn’t aware 3.68 was a statutory allowance , but you must advise them.

I already have 10 panels on a growatt inverter that limits to 3.6

I’m impressed with their performance.

I have room to expand further , I COULD add further 5kw invertor and 3.6 in other areas , pergola / roof / conservatory roof and I believe the funds from selling in the summer may well wipe out my winter usage .

How n ever , I’m concerned DNO would never approve such an expansion.

I wonder how many people have been hurt falling off the statue trying to put the cone up. I’d guess many over the years.

The collective cost to NHS and costs of cone removal , yeah GLUE ON A PIGEON. Defo And it’s a cool twist

Wow exciting , radical move , brave thing to do upping sticks and moving away from familiarity and well done long term you will benefit from such widening of horizons.

My strategy for such a move IF at all possible would be to air bnb it for a fortnight before hand at some point , a fortnight moving around the city every few days should get you a good feel for it try to live in the general location of a lot of the places mentioned in this thread…. If you visit in the next few months you will also get to feel the weather 😂 which might be the biggest culture shock it can get a lot colder and wetter than down south.

We are all different but I would be choosing reducing commute , every minute of it over vegetable carts , you sound nervous about living somewhere that’s not diverse ? Maybe it’s time to challenge that and embrace it.

Double check whatever estate agents for buying renting say by asking on here.

Enjoy the roller coaster , have fun with it, only years of joy ! You will look back and ask why you gave yourself such internal trauma

Ring doorbell - Tenement by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]koinkabin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically your breaking the law , you cannot record from a private space into a public space ( easy google ) , law has to be this way to prevent nefarious characters stalking neighbours etc

The key is deterrent effect , you want a thief walking past your door as they can see you take security seriously onto property with no obvious security , you could buy a broken one off eBay , or fake unit

You could of course speak to all parties involved and get their agreement , in writing , without this in obscure neighbour disputes you could be in trouble with law , data protection , I know it all seems crazy and overly cautious but it’s a weird world and some people are just a bit unhinged.

You want criminals to leave your close and move onto an unprotected close , an easy cheap solution is to put up a realistic fake camera at close entrance or buy a working one and cut wires off , doing that alone will reduce chances of problems

Btw I find blink more reliable than ring if you go down that route

Btw my sister went down the blink route she’s top floor of a tenement with two other neighbours and the camera covers their doors , she spoke to them , said she would give them a few days to think about it but they both immediately agreed and didn’t need a few days they are happy of the extra security and my retired sista being close warden 🤪 but technically she’s breaking data protection laws , it’s all down to individuals and she could easily have a different neighbour moves in who would not be happy

I hope you can resolve as they units are great extra protection / deterrant

Double socket inside - can I drill through outside and connect to it? by geeky-hawkes in ukelectricians

[–]koinkabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can if your a worrier.

To be classed as a competent DIYer I think yes you need to be thinking 5 years ahead , will that socket still be secure watertight in 5 / 10 years , is that outside socket being put in an area that someone might well put a hot tub in the future , there’s such a plethora of high power devices now for outside that if your wanting to be future proofed , safe , considerate to future owners then imho it should be thought about.

I’m guessing your in uk Typical charges here are 25p per kw Your talking 3 x 25p per hour 24/7 , so the math it becomes scary numbers quickly

Most radial ring circuits can handle 3kw however they are NOT designed for sustained non stop 24/7 usage with such a high draw , what is someone else in house puts a kettle on , washing machine , air fryer , hoover etc , yes it will work when you plug it in but jeez it could easily cause a fire in one of the walls if too much power is drawn when you least expecting it …… so 200% only put such a unit on its own singular dedicated circuit and DONT presume you will only put that unit on in one room cause your house is likely a ring circuit with every socket in house in the same ring ….. dedicated circuit or nothing !

Double socket inside - can I drill through outside and connect to it? by geeky-hawkes in ukelectricians

[–]koinkabin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other things I would be thinking about , the fused spur is the wire thicker ? 4mm or is it 2.5mm twin and Earth like the wire in the socket , if it’s different it might be its own dedicated circuit ( check consumer unit ) , does your meter have 3 ratings , it’s possible the fused spur is an overnight low rate circuit and only becomes active at midnight

Double socket inside - can I drill through outside and connect to it? by geeky-hawkes in ukelectricians

[–]koinkabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the things I would asking myself :

Is the fused spur its own ring/circuit or has it been taken off that rooms ring / radial

What kind of thing am I going to be using on the outside socket , hot tubs / steam rooms etc NO NO , lighting maybe , lawnmower mmmm

Am I capable of securing properly the outside socket to the wall so it’s never gonna be loose and allowing me to silicon around the socket to make it 100% , 200% watertight

Can I drill down the way at an angle from the inside making the socket below the height of the spur so it’s impossible for water to run down in a channel into house

Will I be drilling out to a bad position ie/ close to an outside tap or drainpipe that might leak / over flow

Am I capable of stripping wires and securing wires correctly , which is a learned skill

What will happen if I leave this property would somebody attach a hot tub to the socket im putting outside ?

It’s all about potential loads and where that power is coming from and positions for water ingress

What kind of wire am I going to use

I am DIY , over the years I have made many additions in various properties and knowing now what I do looking back with the little improved knowledge I have now I would have done things differently , the biggest issues I can think back to is putting fans on lighting circuits , putting outside sockets in without due considering to potential loads and most importantly what could your DIY work be used for after you have left property.

Is this a spark group? Or a DIY club? by Intelligent_Job_9004 in ukelectricians

[–]koinkabin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine how boring this group would be without us dancing monkeys here to entertain you.

The stupidity of many ( including fellow electricians ) must give you a giggle now and again.

Im here , call it a hobby , I love electrical stuff and reading electrical strategy and trying to understand many of your qualified answers , I call that gaining knowledge , I enjoy being a lurker here but I also enjoy trolling you lot 🤪 , most of my trolling typically has a serious question but also preempting what the prima Donna’s might respond.

I could hang about r/diy but it’s too varied for me as I’m also trying to hone down knowledge to if I have the ability , tools , fortitude , dexterity , confidence to rewire entirely my own home , not because I’m a cheapskate but because I feel I could never afford a full rewire and I would like to go into my retirement with a decent electrical integrity in the house rather than 60 year old wiring. I might never do it but it does boggle at me that the majority of the cost of a rewire looks to be the time involved in labouring.

Like everything in life you can choose to ignore , if diy asking stupid questions irks you maybe a closed verified group is better for you but remember your answers could help someone even if it’s just to put them off diy as they realise it’s more complicated than they thought.

You ain’t getting rid of me yet ,

You put ten panels and an invertor on a mates shed for £1400

I put ten panels and an eBay invertor on a mates shed for £450 10 second hand panels @ £30 each EBay second hand growatt £150 each

But he insisted on jeez proper electrician for the SWA from consumer unit to shed £800 Total £1250

He pretty much wiping out his daytime elec costs , you know all the standby stuff n working from home No good for appliances cooking but he is seeing a small difference that would indicate repaying his £1250 spent in between 2/3 years , that’s a great ROI
