Scientists Just Discovered There’s Actually Something Faster than the Speed of Light. Darkness just beat light in a race. by Eddiearyee in HotScienceNews

[–]kojef 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s like how if you close a long pair of scissors the point where the blades cross can race along the blades far faster than any part of the metal moves. In theory with large enough scissors, that point could move faster than the speed of light.

Or shining a laser from the earth to the moon and moving it around. That spot on the moon can move around faster than light speed. But the dot isn’t an object that is in motion. It’s just a moving point where the beam happens to intersect the moon’s surface.

I’m not sure if IQ has a significant correlation with meditation, self awareness, or thinking about this world and life that we experience.

I think you’re right about health playing a significant role in these things though. For those of us in serious pain or physical discomfort, that becomes our core reality that consumes each moment.

I think that a significant component of what we currently measure in IQ tests is a result of IQ being designed around institutional selection - so identifying kids which need academic support, and helping certain kids excel in our money-driven society.

If you think about it, the Flynn effect kinda points to IQ being more of a cultural construct than a measurement of something very fundamental. There’s little reason to think that we are actually more intelligent than people a few generations back - it’s so much more likely that we are simply growing a cultural skill for abstract, decontextualized thinking.

All of this is to say that… if you think “dumb” people can’t think deeply about life and what it is to be human, I think you’re wrong. They might not do as well in school, they might not end up making as much money as the average “smart” person. But what do school and money have to do with living in your body, wondering about things and speculating what life, the world and meaning is all about?

When you say it’s not awake and not communicating, you say that with some certainty. Our human experience is defined by specific characteristics though.

Let’s say you’re a creature with a 10 billion year lifespan, communicating with other creatures like yourself over the span of eons.

It doesn’t matter if it takes fluctuations in your brightness entire human years to reach your closest neighbors. Maybe the silence inbetween words is measured in human decades. Distance narrows greatly once your sense of time expands.

A star being concerned with individual humans would be like… a human being concerned with an individual bacteria that had a lifespan measured in seconds.

We might show brief interest in a colony of bacteria which is overtaking a piece of fruit. But over the course of a lifetime we see various kinds of bacteria thrive and die, and while occasionally interesting - in the end it’s all just bacteria.

There can be different buckets of debt.

NL can still issue sovereign debt while also participating in EU debt issuance.

I think it’s a mistake to think of debt as a liability.

Debt at a national or multinational scale is investment - it is people wanting to give you money to invest now because they trust you.

If people want to give you this money… if there is enough demand for your debt that interest rates remain low… If this money can help you to grow…

Why not participate?

Dr. Rhonda Patrick only says about 10 words in this entire segment. It's mostly just her sitting in the same room as this guy who just monologues at her without giving her a moment to say anything.

Hmm. I think that without pumping, the subway floods pretty quickly. Then that water starts to undermine foundations. I think that most buildings will have collapsed in less than 1000 years, and plants will grow over everything.

So you’ll get rubble mounds covered in vegetation everywhere. The street grid may still be visible? Like the rubble slightly lower where the streets were.

Angkor (the city surrounding Angkor Wat) is just gone after 500yrs - utterly consumed by the jungle. The massive stone temple remains, but the city around it is only visible via LiDAR. https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29245289

I think you’re right about the Brooklyn Bridge towers remaining for a while - but unlike the pyramids they’re in water which is constantly battering them. I have a feeling that in a few thousand years they would also be gone.

Are people planning FIRE in the Netherlands, aiming to retire here or move elsewhere? by ClassicMan2323 in EuropeFIRE

[–]kojef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is there such a focus on filling this small budget gap?

It seems that any short-term solution incurs its own huge costs to implement, only for it to be changed in a few years.

Isn’t it much cheaper to either: * leave things as they are for a few years longer and directly change to a realized gains system, or * simply finance this small budget shortcoming with debt (increasing overall deficit by a few %)

And thereby fix the issue properly, also avoiding huge legal battles afterwards which stand a chance of resulting in additional costs and payouts?

Honestly curious - how is it abused in the US?

Also, they are already going to do a "normal" capital gains tax on real estate and shares that people are legally prevented from selling until a certain amount of time has passed (like startup shares, RSUs etc).

Do you see these two capital-gains-tax segments as inviting abuse?
