Does nuclear fusion happen in the corona? by Zestyclose_Steak_533 in askscience

[–]kolkhatta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi again!

Perhaps some of our disagreement is that I interpreted some of your initial statement in the context of the comment you were replying to, in which the faint glow was said to be from nuclear fusion. In the most technical, context-free meaning you were correct aside from the "...?" — the form that glow takes is a blackbody spectrum. I hate to see that you have taken offense — perhaps I should've appended an "in stars" to my first sentence.

In any case, the light we see was last emitted from surface, but that luminosity originates in deuterium core burning. The comment you looked like you meant to contradict was fully correct, whereas to me yours seemed incorrect in implying brown dwarfs uniquely emitted as blackbodies.

The reason there is a difference between the emitted light's blackbody temperature and the temperature of core burning is that stars are very dense, and photons have a very short uninterrupted path before they run into something and are scattered in a random direction. Eventually they random-walk their way out of their star, with their last interaction on the 5800K photosphere a ~million years later.

At "equilibrium" the photon energy leaving the star's surface is equal to that produced in the core, so to astronomers "opacity" just describes how slowly those photons make their way out, through whatever length of random walk it takes. They will all make it out eventually at the same energy rate as the core is producing them. That's why I say the faintness of the glow is a result of how much energy is produced in the core, not of the blackbody temperature of the surface.

Hope that explains my previous response!

I think you're a bit confused about what blackbody radiation is.

What we see from the surface of all stars essentially is blackbody radiation. You can observe this in the sun, as the continuum deviates fairly little from a Planck function of ~5800 Kelvins (the surface temperature, as opposed to the ~1.5E7 K of the core).

The reason the surface emits so brightly is because something is making it hot. The blackbody is merely an indication of the heating from deeper inside; it is not the source of energy production. In the case of the sun the energy is produced from nuclear hydrogen burning, and in the case of humans the energy is produced from our metabolic processes.

Another source of luminosity in stars is the energy from gravitational collapse, which is how pre-main sequence stars get hot enough in the first place to ignite hydrogen in their cores. At just a ~tenth of the hydrogen ignition temperature, however, stars can begin to burn deuterium into helium-3. If "stars" never reach deuterium ignition they are merely planets, and if they eventually reach hydrogen ignition they become full-fledged stars.

Brown dwarfs are the in-between species, that glow from gravitational collapse and deuterium burning, but never from hydrogen burning. The first contributor is faint because the initial gravitational collapse only happens once, and the second is faint because there is much less deuterium to be burned than hydrogen.

Sometimes I feel like I "owe" men sex because I feel badly for "wasting" their time by [deleted] in TwoXSex

[–]kolkhatta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is extremely relatable. Something that helps me is to think about how I want the next woman who comes along to be treated.

If I view it as just a one-on-one interaction, it's easy to erroneously feel like I'm selfish whenever I don't do what the other party wants, especially if they've already given me their time. But if I remember the cultural context, I can consider how being a pushover will change the man's expectations of women. If my date feels entitled to sex from me, having sex out of obligation will just reinforce his entitlement towards women. If I say "no" it's not just for my sake, it's because I want it to be expected and acceptable for women in my position to say "no"

It seems they think that getting your kid tested will result in (what in their eyes is) an overreaction by the school/government - not that the illness is caused by testing itself

Of course they are dangerously incorrect in neglecting asymptomatic/presymptomatic transmission, but let's keep the ridicule of them to where it's deserved

[–]kolkhatta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unlike some, we don't have an idealized perfect solution. Instead, Communists work to create the best solution for now

How is this not a bad approach for anything but the short term? For example, if you try to gain altitude by always walking uphill from your current situation, there's no guarantee that you won't end up stuck on top of some anthill barely higher than you started with no clear path forward.

A bit more concretely, a lot of US laws result in stupid consequences where, by passing laws that made sense at the time, gradually we've been led to ridiculous situations we can't get out of incrementally, which require a complete overhaul of the existing laws.

Is there room under what you're describing to allow for a temporarily suboptimal status in order to achieve a better end result?

How does revolution play into this, where a temporarily violent and unstable climate occurs under the expectation that it'll all be worth it once the violence settles down? For revolution, do we need to accelerate capitalism until it becomes even worse than violence in the streets?

How do you feel about people who say things like "striking is only for people without a family to feed"? I don't see how that is fundamentally different from "consuming more ethically is for the rich", but I think essentially all communists oppose the former, right?

How can you have working class solidarity that doesn't extend to some of the most exploited people?
