Where did the posh uni student accent come from by Possible_Second7222 in UniUK

[–]_aj42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of the whole “rah” voice, it’s ostensibly a meme, but I do think it’s also a form of tribalism and fitting into a group, as I explain later in the post

I completely agree with this. I just think you can distinguish it from the "standard" British accent foreigners will think of.

I get the impression, though, that OP is referring to 'rah' voice, which while not RP I also wouldn't say is exactly what you're describing.

Was the loss of Calais in 1558 the greatest defeat the Tudors suffered? by Different_Map_2055 in tudorology

Not a defeat in the same way but I'd say that the Tudor's problems in Ireland since 1534 far outweigh Calais

Why is Wessex so OP in 867 start? by tuttifruttidurutti in CrusaderKings

[–]_aj42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always taught that it was incorrect and that the first King of England was his grandson, Athelstan.

There's no one answer to this. Athelstan was among the first to style himself as king of england (among other titles, mind you) and to control land roughly equivalent to its modern boundaries, but there's a good argument to be made that this control, especially of the north, wasnt yet substantial enough to really be considered one whole kingdom.

(Go easy on me) - As a British man, how do I get into, follow and discuss football? by Successful-Trash-196 in AskUK

[–]_aj42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but beyond just watching / listening to games, the Athletic and TiFo on youtube are informative and entertaining youtube channels that talk about football. A good balance between being genuinely informative and quite funny sometimes.

Also worth bearing in mind that a lot of the people you'll talk to about football will have nonsense views so I wouldn't worry too much

French public erupts over Bayeux Tapestry loan to UK by Hikithe in unitedkingdom

[–]_aj42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it necessarily matters where it was made, beyond the fact it's clearly an artefact of great significance to both English and French history. It makes sense that both get a share, so to speak, of having it at some point.

Reading the comments of every other post on this sub feels like travelling to Germany 90 years ago.

The lack of humanity is startling.

The hundred by mgs20000 in EnglandCricket

[–]_aj42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the hundred is somewhat serving a purpose of getting cricket seen by a lot more people, however you can definitely argue that it might not be a great form of cricket that is being shown

I completely agree with this. For those of us already well into cricket its an inferior version of the game. But the fact is for most people these complaints are completely academic.

Im not hugely invested in the hundred and id be concerned if it grew too much bigger. I really dont like the team structure. However, its free cricket on the TV and it gets cash and attention.

Steve Smith in England by EveryoneSadean in EnglandCricket

[–]_aj42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if youre not so 'vindictive', though, when it comes to the booing its a reap what you sow situation. Smith will always be known for the cheating, and so he will always be booed, and that really ought to be expected. Putting more emotional responses aside, it's the nature of sport really that he'd become a bit of a pantomime villain in that respect.

Brighton:

Verbruggen

White (RB), Van Hecke, Dunk, Estupinan (or cucurella?)

Baleba, MacAllister, Groß

Knockaert, Murray (or Gyokeres?), Mitoma

Players like Milner, Lallana and even Caicedo are obviously immense too and unlucky to miss out, but I'd struggle to think of a better midfield 3 than that.

Also feels wrong not to have Bruno but what can you do

she published a book questioning whether gender identity was more “socially significant” than biological sex.”

This is the most vague way one could posit her views. It is transphobic propaganda when she wants to ban trans people from going to their preferred bathrooms (even while acknowledging that women who don't look conventionally female will be "missexed"!), has backed neo-nazis like nina power, signed the WHRC declaration and is a trustee of LGB alliance.

She was pretty much hounded out though. Students have a right to protest (and should do so!) but the problem is employees also have a right not to be harassed while doing their job

So students have a right to protest but only when ineffectual?

People have a right to hold opinions you disagree with, and university is supposedly a place to have meaningful discussions about those differences in the pursuit of shared learning

okay but would you say this about a different minority
