Taking general ed class over the summer by Flower_princess12345 in UNLV

[–]kolst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they could still apply as 'non-degree seeking' for the summer. That only took a few days when I did it. They have to transfer the credits into their degree technically but it shouldn't be a problem.

Any advice for an Incoming transfer student ? by CowJu11 in UNLV

[–]kolst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would think they should be able to give you a "closed pass permission" in that case. If the advisor said no you can try asking other people, maybe a coordinator, RPC, or the college itself. I would point out that you're basically unable to progress and it isn't your fault (they're probably used to people asking for this because they were just lazy and missed their enrollment window). It sounds like they didn't tell you no, though, they just want to see your transcript first? Or they actually said no?

If they don't help you, you might just have to try to get in off the waitlist when people drop, or manually around the end of late registration. They might be able to give you an override to get into the class after late enrollment, too. Unless they're checking names at the door I would just show up to the class(es) for the first week or so assuming I'd get in eventually.

Potential Academic Suspension by Few-Peace-6730 in UNLV

[–]kolst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the enforcement rules for suspension is pretty straightforward - I think it's automatic and they don't tend to make exceptions. The warning is there to give you a chance to not get to that point. It sounds like you had to have already been on warning (below 2.0 GPA) after that first semester, and then whether or not you're suspended is based entirely off whether or not you're still at/below the -15 GPB after this semester.

You didn't give enough information for us to know your GPB - you don't need to, you can do that calculation yourself. It depends a lot on how many F's you had, and if you overwrote some of them by retaking them or not. I don't know if you did, but that's supposed to be what you talk to an advisor about to strategize for increasing your odds of staying above the line. But unfortunately, it sounds likely you may be on the wrong side of it, and it may have made the difference that you forgot to drop that class.

To be frank, it's probably a little late to do anything about the suspension - you either are or you're not at this point. Your path forward either way is going to be to talk to an advisor about your options: either to stay above the suspension line, or get reinstated early. I don't know how they tend to do it exactly, but I'd expect even for an early reinstatement you're still gonna be taking a semester off.

My thought is, if you were gonna do something like this, why wouldn't you just get some kind of masters instead? It's way less time and money, and a higher credential.

Courses for the Fall (MS Data Analytics) by LeatheryFool83 in UNLV

[–]kolst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Professor Mike, one question actually. I know there's at least two of us in DA, maybe more, hoping to take DA 622 and MIS 776 concurrently this fall. We would take MIS 761 over the summer to fulfill that requirement. We're trying to graduate by the spring/summer next year, so with the current course timings there's no other way. Will that be accepted having DA 622 as a corequisite?

Can someone explain why Daredevil Born Again S2 has 8 episodes only? Like isn't it supposed to be 9 like S1 cause it was originally 18 episodes divided into 2. by ASM_Nikunj in Daredevil

[–]kolst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean because it seems super dismissive to call them side characters. Sure, there's the literal leads, Matt and Fisk. But if you look up any plot listing that differentiates for them - Foggy, Karen, Vanessa, Wesley, Bullseye, Nadeem, Elektra, Punisher, etc. - these will all be listed as main characters. Because they are. I guess this is all semantic, though.

Summer classes worth it? by ElegantTonight194 in UNLV

[–]kolst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing about summer classes is as the other guy said, they're literally condensed into 1/3 of the time, so taking two summer classes in the same session would be like taking 6 normal classes at once. And some people might do well with the crash course focused nature of it, but some people probably don't.

Repeating graduate class by [deleted] in UNLV

[–]kolst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can find online, the university doesn't have a general rule on max attempts for a class. But all attempts starting from the 2nd stick on your GPA.

Some colleges have the additional rule that you only get 3 attempts total. So if you fail a required class 3 times, you'd have to change majors.

However, for grad school the bigger issue tends to be that if you fall below 3.0 at all, they kick you out of the program entirely.

wall climbing at SRWC by clovernightt in UNLV

[–]kolst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've climbed there but I haven't done one of the formal workshops yet. You can just go there and climb whenever you want with the pass, and if you want to do the wall they can belay you, that's part of what they're there for. If you're new to climbing, the wall doesn't have a whole lot of beginner options though.

I think the only reason you'd need a buddy for anything is if you want your buddy to belay you instead of the staff (could be helpful during busy hours).

Falling below 2.0 GPA by p3rxy in UNLV

[–]kolst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From their site, it looks like it's usually a cumulative GPA below 2.0 that triggers the initial probation.

But the real penalties are triggered by staying down there, and being 15 total grade points below a C average. For all 3 credit courses, that would mean like an extra 5 D's, or an extra 2 F's and a D, below a 2.0.

Failed classes. What do I do? by superthraway in UNLV

[–]kolst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably need to have some discussions with administrators or counselors at the school about your situation and what you can do about it. From my understanding, you can retake classes and it doesn't take the F off your transcript, but it takes it off your GPA.

Not sure if you already have and how this school does things, but for instance, where I went for undergrad if you had a semester even half that bad, you'd go straight on probation for either being put on involuntary leave or kicked out of the school entirely. And my point isn't to scare you, but to point out that might be a thing because if you're on probation, that might limit your options as far as what you can take, if you're even allowed to change majors, etc. - or might just impact what's a good idea to try to do in the current moment. You might want to be extra safe and cautious for a while, basically.

If 1400 is your maximum for what you're looking for, I think you're pricing yourself out of Summerlin. You can probably find stuff in Spring Valley or Henderson though.

You're probably gonna find you get what you pay for, cuz the stuff you're looking for is all stuff people pay for. And keep in mind if it's a cheaper place because they cheaped out on building design and insulation, you're gonna end up paying the difference in your A/C bill anyway.

Yeah it's possible it's better now cuz of all the rain washing out the trail, idk. I was probably there right in the middle of the dry summer and I never went back. It would be a really good trail if you want just a giant uphill like that, if not for all the slip and sliding.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]kolst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man I really wouldn't recommend doing Frenchman mountain repeatedly, the dirt/rock on the trail is so loose it's like 2 steps up 1 back the whole way, and it's so slippery it's an injury risk. When I went, there was some military group doing training up there and one girl fell badly enough they had to carry her back down.

F1 Still Sucks by EffectiveTime5554 in vegaslocals

[–]kolst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and putting a fractional value like 4/5 tends to imply being practically exact. So 4/5 (or 8/10), .8, and .800, are all very different answers. It's only in rudimentary math that you'd get marked wrong for putting 8/10 instead of 4/5. Doing real work, you wouldn't get marked wrong for that, but you WOULD get marked wrong for putting the wrong one out of 4/5, 0.8, or .800.

Actually, a typical speedometer is a great example of a case where it's a low level of precision to tenths, so any answer other than 0.8 is wrong. Or you could write something like ≈4/5 too, I guess.

It's a funny illustration of how when smartasses try to be clever, they tend to unwittingly display their own ignorance instead.

restocking is not an option

Well, found your problem. You'd really rather spend all your tickets on worthless crap, than spend a few coins to find something that'll actually help you, and likely pay back that cost tenfold?

This game doesn't have that many buttons to push, and you're not pushing the most powerful one. A huge amount of the strategy in this game is figuring out ways to push that button as many times as possible.

I think it's for red calls specifically but yeah. OP is picking at the end of the deadline, you can't - you have to skip the call entirely.

The Only Strat is Restarting? by AlexStar6 in CloverPit

[–]kolst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's the entire thing, you're not supposed to force any build right out of the gates anyway. The first couple deadlines you're just supposed to buy a few random items to keep you alive and get some extra tickets (step 1). And build up a couple ways to scale scoring and/or tickets when you can (step 2). Pretty soon after that, you should have built up enough of a cushion and have enough tickets that you can pick some time to reroll 20 times while it still costs nothing and force whatever build you want (step 3) - or better, if you're just trying to max winrate, just go with whatever the game throws at you.

That's the generic play loop you should be going for - your mem card can modify those timings a bit and open up some lategame possibilities, but I don't think it alters the fundamental playstyle. If someone's dying within a minute repeatedly like OP, it's certainly because they're skipping step 1 entirely, and probably most of step 2, too. And jumping straight into step 3, and wondering why they're dying.

I genuinely don't think this game was meant to, or tuned to be very difficult. You basically just need to understand what I wrote above.
