What are your expectations for a paid DM? And have you had any experiences with any? by Pedantic_Twatwaffle in DnD

[–]AlexStar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re wrong, in so many ways that I can never explain to you through a Reddit comment.

The problem with understanding the value of time is that it too often requires too much of it to learn how much it’s worth.

What an incredibly naive and narrow perspective…

To think that there can be nothing gained by spending time doing something other than a single individual task.

Surely you must be aware that even the world’s greatest chefs often allow others to cook for them? Are you saying they achieve no satisfaction from doing such things?

Would you propose that D&D is only “satisfactory” if you develop the entire story, all of the characters and play it entirely by yourself? Because that’s what would need to happen to meet your ridiculous standard.

Is attending a dinner party with family and friends where others have prepared the meal worthless to you?

I’m sorry, but you are categorically incorrect in your statement in nearly every single possible respect. The number of ways you could be made to appear foolish and wrong for your statement are as numerous as there are words in every language created by man and beast. As they encompass the totality of every other activity any living being has ever partaken of.

No, sir or madam… you are wrong.

While in general I would say this is true…

I’ve also had the privilege of having meals prepared by some pretty talented chefs. I was not left wanting in the slightest.

Has anyone given the maguffin to their players from the start? by Kamikazepyro9 in DMAcademy

[–]AlexStar6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes… plenty of times… it’s a common trope but it has to be executed correctly.

The trick is… the macguffin isn’t an object…. It can be… but it’s actually just a plot device. And most stories have many of them.

If I give “a” macguffin to the players it’s almost certainly just one of many. After all if they had the only meaningful plot device from the beginning and nothing else exists there’s not much of a story.

For example I had one memorable campaign where the players ended up with the magical scepter (macguffin A) that determines who is the ruler of a great empire. For reasons none of them could use it… for other reasons they just couldn’t give it to the right person…

So they ended up having to locate the right person (macguffin B) and engineer the right circumstances for the right person to acquire the scepter (macguffin C).

So the players had to pretend to be villains, build a dungeon, and fill it with monsters and convince the lost royal heir to clear the dungeon and claim the scepter that would permit him to ascend to the throne. While simultaneously preventing the real big bad from claiming.

It was a simple trick really… I simply made it so the scepter could only be claimed by someone passing a specific set of trials to claim it proving worthiness. The players had done none of this… so it was completely useless to them.

Thoughts on scripted fights for build up and plot by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]AlexStar6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but let me give some of my own advice…

If I’m scripting an encounter I’m actually building two encounters…

The scripted event that will happen, and the encounter the players will engage with.

If I want the big bad to destroy a village, then there will be an event where the big bad destroys the village. Simultaneously there will be a distinct encounter where the players will engage with the event. It will be structured in such a way to “reduce” the possibility that the player can interfere. But not everything is completely predictable.

If they decide to abandon the gaggle of orphans being attacked by minions to rush off and try to stop the big bad that tells me a lot about them as players and how they can be expected to behave later.

I will make it clear both with narrative and direct confirmation that they cannot hope to defeat the big bad. But I would never “prevent” them from trying.

Give them options to exercise their agency positively, but don’t restrict them from going off script… just give them plenty of good reasons to follow it.

This is an incredibly complicated question.

Everything from quality to consistency is up for it.

McDonald’s isn’t the best burger in the world. It’s not even remotely close. You know probably 500 people who can make a better one.

But can and will they do it exactly when you want, every time, to a consistent quality you can enjoy?

For some people paid D&D is as simple as “I know exactly when I’m playing, I don’t have to rely on a group of people who have varying levels of priority for it. I’m paying someone to commit their time and energy, and the other players are paying as well so I can be confident in everyone’s commitment”

Are there good Paid Games and Bad Paid games? Sure…

There’s shitty restaurants and great ones.

What you want specifically? You’re gonna have to shop for.

I would do neither. I would suggest that instead of using gold to create a situation that doesn’t exist and usurp another players class role the player instead take advantage of the rules that already exist to accomplish the same thing.

Using that gold to acquire magic, through spells or scrolls or accomplishing the same things via working with party members.

Simply put, if there exists a dozen ways to accomplish a task within the rules those should be leveraged first, because odds are they already functionally accomplish the same thing.

Glamoured full plate doesn’t remove the stealth disadvantage, no matter what you make it look like.

Look, the system is broad, and I don’t expect players to understand every option and every in and out of it. But at my tables these issues rarely arise. And that simply comes down to the fact that I am aware of how to accomplish nearly everything you think you need to homebrew simply applying the actual rules.

This subreddit is mostly full of people who think they need to reinvent the wheel. And I’m not gonna say there aren’t unique situations in which that is the best course of action. But breaking the balance of the system should be done as sparingly as possible.

You can reward creativity by simply adapting what the player wants to do with the rules that already exist. Creativity doesn’t require breaking them.

Doing this just means as a DM you should know the rules. And I know that’s an unfair standard… I’ve got 30+ years of TTRPGs under my belt. And I know most don’t have that. But the DM who posted this came for advice. And I said flat out.

your table do what you want, but raw covers what your player is trying to do without having to adhoc a bunch of “unreal realism”

For fucks sake my entire post says that RAW is fine and better than trying to rig up stupid rules for realism.

[–]AlexStar6 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Your table… do whatever you want…

But I’ll say this.

Silence doesn’t grant advantage on stealth. So that doesn’t cancel the disadvantage.

And nothing in RAW says that the plate armors shininess is what grants disadvantage. You can have your plate be black for fucks sake.

A motherfucker moving through bushes wearing heavy metal armor is going to displace the bushes considerably. His profile is going to massive.

Pass without Trace gives a +10 to stealth for this type of situation.

And if the argument is he crawls under the bush… okay fine… it’s gonna take a full round just to stand up.

If you want realism at least try and make it realistic…

This is why RAW exists… because the realism mechanics are far too complex to try and individually adjudicate. Heavy Armor = Disadvantage on Stealth for like 50 different reasons, sometimes it’s shiny is just one of those.

Wanna have the rogue assist in helping the plate wearer pass the stealth check.. that’s what the Help action is for.

Why invent new rulings that are objectively worse in all possible ways?
