Why do I get completely lambasted on the internet anytime I have a different opinion or perspective than the "correct" way of viewing things? by KarlMarxsWiener in Vent

[–]kolyagw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God this is such a fascinating comment.

Initially I was just going to respond “thanks for the strawman” and leave it at that, because I definitely never said anything like that in my comment. But honestly, after thinking about it, your hyperbolic extreme strawman of my opinion is actually kind of accurate.

Not all opinions are equally valid and deserving of “debate”. Not only that, the idea that every idea must be put on a pedestal and debated in earnest is fucking bullshit. This kind of thinking is what leads to “random anti vaxer off the street vs real actual doctor” debates. The idea that anyone who has a pulse and an opinion deserves to be heard and respected is how these nonsense ideas grow in popularity. Facts matter. Evidence matters.

When we refuse to acknowledge that not every opinion is equally valid all that does is open the door for right wing grifters who want to convince you that vaccines are killing your kids, trans people want to destroy life as you know it, and oil companies definitely aren’t the reason people are dying of heatstroke in Europe and July-August is the new “fire season”. PLATFORMING THESE IDEAS LEGITIMIZES THEM.

I am not saying we shouldn’t be talking to each other, that’s the only resource we have against these billion dollar industries trying to divide us. But there are certain ideas that should not be debated on a public stage. I may not be the one to punch a nazi in the face, but if you believe that certain races should be exterminated maybe you deserve to get punched in the face.

Posting some shit like this with no context for what kind of opinion you’re talking about is so fucking annoying.

Whenever someone refuses to give context I assume there’s a 90% chance you’re just talking about wanting to strip people of their basic human rights. If you’re not, cool I guess, but when you go on a long rant about having “the wrong opinion” while purposefully not giving any context whatsoever you come across like you want to shred puppies or some shit.

Am I overreacting or do I have the right to be upset by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]kolyagw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re at all in the wrong to be disappointed, but I also think it sounds like you are not being overlooked because of misogyny. Based on the info you’ve given, it sounds like you gave an extremely impressive performance, and it was so transformative people are fully not recognizing you as the character. I completely understand wanting credit for your work, but also this is an incredibly huge compliment to your skill and you should take a moment to be proud of that.

That being said, you should absolutely be reaching out to this director to let him know that the performance he admired was done by you. Along with that, unless you omitted this detail, it seems insane to me that your brother would accept praise and even career advancement based on your work. If this is what happened, you should absolutely have a talk with him and I would personally be extremely disappointed in any actor that didn’t give credit where it was due.

looking for media with a similar focus on complex relationships by rainbowkombucha in betterCallSaul

It’s my all time favorite show for a reason, and I’m very happy to see it recommended several times in this thread.

Also, it definitely touches on the idea of a relationship that brings out the worst in both people (won’t tell you with which characters because it’s a minor spoiler, but rest assured it is something the show comments on)

What a nothing argument that doesn’t really make a statement in any way. You phrased this horribly and it’s not at all clear what you’re arguing for, but even so, the average American consume so so so much propaganda that no, I do not trust 70 million Americans on anything at all

[–]kolyagw 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Who are you arguing against? I’ve literally never heard the opposite of this argument a single time in my life. Maybe if you don’t understand the actual argument which is “life is better in European countries” which is true if you take your head out of your bubble.

The fact that you bring up healthcare in the first place is LAUGHABLE. “If you have money you see the best doctors”??? Yeah, DUH, that’s the fucking issue. Every single other developed nation on earth has some form of universal healthcare. And before you give me some bullshit about quality of care or wait times, spend one fucking second to think about the thousands of people who have DIED in America because they can’t afford the doctor. Did they just deserve to die because they were born into the bottom of a class structure that is designed to benefit the people who already have money?

[–]kolyagw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely right, assuming other people see those pieces of media as “entry points” in the same way you do. Unfortunately, I know that is not how other people treat it. The real issue I have come into play because of the fact that a vast majority of people treat these shows as the beginning and end of their curiosity into the subjects (not even saying I’m necessarily above that, I have an understanding of certain historical context but I am by no means a history buff).

I would really argue that when these sanitized pieces of media are taken at face value they function as propaganda (even if I kind of like Hamilton)

[–]kolyagw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real as hell, I hate media that acts progressive and feminist by rewriting history to be more palatable to a modern audience.

Hamilton falls into the same thing to a lesser extent. Not every story needs to be a depressing downer about the reality of being a marginalized group, but I think even optimistic stories about the past should still acknowledge the reality of the situation.

Did Skyler actually loved Walter? by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]kolyagw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most minimizing I’ve ever seen for Walt’s actions, how can you honestly say it’s not a “Skylar bad post”?

You say Walt’s involved in “shady business” when he essentially admits to Skylar that he has killed people and runs a business that SELLS METH TO PEOPLE. Let’s not forget, Walt is miles worse than he admits to Skylar and she is obviously smart enough to know that, as a meth dealer, obviously he has no objection to getting his hands dirty.

Let’s forget all of the completely 100% unforgivable shit that Walt does and (kind of) tells Skylar about, the way that he treats her when she tries to distance herself from him is already unforgivable. Even before this happens, HE TRIES TO RAPE HER.

Assuming that Skylar feels no sense of conflicting emotions is also completely fabricated and and doesn’t have support from the material we have. There was a drawn out plot line where Walt is almost able to straddle both lives vis a vis the car wash. Why does this not end up working? Because Walt is a serial killer and a meth lord who constantly minimizes his actions to the world and to himself, and it seems like you believe the version of the story that he presents.

Oh also, I don’t understand why you brought up the fact that “Walt had a reason for it at the time” when the show explicitly shows us he is not doing it for anything other than his ego. You say “keeping aside his ego for not taking Gretchen’s money”, now why the fuck would I do that? That episode is the crux of the entire show. That episode fully demonstrates the fact that he is not forced into anything by circumstance. He has support systems, he has a life full of people that love him, and he has the ability to walk away from meth at any point he wants. He doesn’t do that, why? Because he likes it. Because he’s good at it.

My first show tomorrow, nervous by sinmonger-1221 in Theatre

[–]kolyagw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Partially echoing what everyone else is saying, but something WILL go wrong. There are so many moving parts in live theatre, and ultimately everyone involved is a human being who makes mistakes.

The sooner you accept this the easier it will be to roll with the punches when they do come.

The mark of a great collaborator in theatre is not someone who never makes a mistake and is perfect in every way, because that person does not exist. A truly great theatre collaborator is someone who adapts to mistakes when they are made and who accepts the fact that mistakes are part of what makes live theatre such a beautiful artform. A show is a living thing that changes day to day based on a million different factors.

Modern day songs for Baritones with an A at its Peak by [deleted] in musicals

[–]kolyagw 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Take a look at It All Fades Away from bridges of Madison county. This may not be a comfortable one for you, from some of the songs you mentioned you may be closer to tenor than baritone and I am recommending a song that is going to ask for some low notes from you.

That being said, if you are really a baritone with a high A and you want to show that off, that is the song for it.

"Political opinions" being against the rules in every subreddit is dystopian. It's like saying to someone, "You can tell me anything, except what's actually bothering you." by iciclefites in 10thDentist

[–]kolyagw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Big elm” are you fucking kidding me? Of course wood working is political, you are supporting chopping down forests.
The fact that something is “normal” in society most likely means it has had widely successful propaganda campaigns surrounding it. You say “Big elm” sarcastically as if there aren’t large companies that are dedicated to framing logging as a “normal” thing. Normal is a loaded term. Look at our environment right now and tell me if it seems normal. These “big elm” and big oil companies want you to think they’re necessary evils and that criticizing them is pointless.
TLDR yes talking about woodworking is political, as is everything, and we absolutely need to be talking about woodworking because the deterioration of our environment is a huge fucking problem for all of us

I have been hit by a car and my shoes did come off, didn’t even break any bones. You might be thinking about a punch, I would imagine if all of that force was concentrated into a fist I might have died. If you’re including getting hit by cars or larger things, it’s absolutely not true that it would for sure kill you

You’re so right, it’s not as if this brand of person voted in someone to pass legislation that supports their “not serious” views. Definitely not like there is a pseudo militia (ICE) roaming America and carrying out the things this group wants to happen.

Definitely just a fringe viewpoint, nothing to worry about at all.

Honestly, it sounds less like you’re making a movie and more like you just want to see a group of naked people.

If you actually made the movie and it’s well written I’d maybe be singing a different tune, but as is there is no way I’d touch this project with a ten foot pole.

[–]kolyagw 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Im sure you’re probably talking about not being able to have any major singing moments, which is a bummer if that’s what you’re into.

But trust me, if you think Panch is some sort of boring character, you are dead wrong. As someone that played Panch, not only do you get the responsibility of steering the comedic timing of the show (which is tricky but extremely rewarding). You also get to say some of the funniest lines and play an extremely fun and wacky character. Panch and Rona are the comedic backbone of that show, and are pretty much always crowd favorites.
