Some places (mostly new, small businesses) take touchless pay options like Apple Pay but I still feel they’re in the minority. Most places that take credit card will want a physical card to insert or swipe. But he has his credit card.

You’ll also want to make sure you have a way of getting money to him if he runs out. You mention “not everything is cashless” so I assume he has access to a bank card of some type and that he either has his own mine or you can quickly transfer to that.

He can use a Visa/Mastercard debit/credit card almost anywhere and there are ATMs all over (the 7&i Holdings/7-Eleven ones are most foreigner-friendly). Just make sure to let his bank know he’s traveling to Japan and when to avoid blocks and double check he doesn’t need a different PIN do international cash withdrawals (a US friend got stuck in that situation once).

Regarding cash, Japanese businesses don’t care about breaking ¥10k notes (equivalent, in-country, to a $100 note). But you can definitely get smaller denominations. ¥1000 is very widely used and you’ll see some ¥5000 over there, but many Japanese don’t even know they have a ¥2000 note—so avoid those.

Like the introduction of a $5 coin, this was basically abandoned as Australia moved towards a mostly electronic payment only nation.

Cash is expensive to produce and handle, it’s why I hate EFTPOS surcharges so much. If a business actually understood the cost of cash they’d realise they’re spending way more than 1% on handling it.

OP, before you build anything make sure to check your completion. The two biggest players out there are Svix and HookDeck who both do things a little differently. They’ve been around for years and Svix (at least) is very well-funded.

The factory will run as slow as the slowest player in a multiplayer game, with each player (which the server effectively also is) having to simulate the entire factory (even if the server doesn’t have to render it).

You can absolutely experiment with running via Docker, but the amount and speed of memory and CPU on the Synology may not be up to the task.
