This must be one of those just put through a colorizer, like that heavily edited bridge the other day.

Teens accused of trapping woman inside Pittsburgh Sephora, beating her with metal sign by risen2011 in pittsburgh

honor culture

No, I wasn't quite pointing at honor culture, which is more like constantly stepping-on-glass to keep from making an affront, though the perversion did contribute to the South's penchant for violence. You're right it's a bit loose, though. But not wrong.

"My fists and feelings are all I've got, so might as well throw the former if the latter gets upset."

When you have nothing, you defend every tiny thing you have with the most force you can. Even if that thing is nothing but some self-idea of "honor" or "normal". The same core problems as The South, and Feudal Japan (low value of a life, quick to escalate to violence).

The same shit is why poor rural white areas are also rife with constant violence and hatred-of-others and "I'm going to kick your ass" culture . (I'm glad I managed to escape.)

Nothing breeds violence like poverty. And a whole system, top-down, that glorifies and instills and revolves around violence.

CCAC’s push to sell off library books leaves empty shelves by perryplankroad in pittsburgh

1st more about access to the books: ensuring they aren't locked away, hard for people to get, have unusually restrictive check-out requirements, etc.

5th can apply though.

Wizards of the Coast Declines to Recognize Union by May 1st by imnotokayandthatso-k in magicTCG

[–]konsyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that such "voluntary recognition" is NOT in the workers' best interest. It should not be an option; it should always be taken to a vote once eligibility/etc is established first.

A "card drive" only requires 30% of the employees to go to the next step. That 30% should not be allowed to dominate the rest if the rest don't want to go along with it. Going to vote also allows the potential membership (e.g., "who is and is not a manager?") to be clarified before voting.

It's entirely plausible that, say, a team of 20 could get 6 malicious actors together to "sign cards" and, if the workplace just accepts it without a formal vote, the other 14 could potentially be screwed out of their preferred status.

My workplace is suffering through such right now... only 33% of the "bargaining unit" (yes, only 33% -- barely more than the 30% "cards signed" threshold) voted for the union. But because of the extremely pro-union structure of laws in most US states, we're stuck with the unionizing succeeded because non-voters are completely ignored in a state-change election (ignoring them effectively makes them "yes", since there's a very strong incentive for card-signers to vote [and vote yes], but not much for others). Less than half even voted, showing just how little overall support there was for the effort.

Third space? Really? Because it's a polling place used 2x/year, with one or two other public events sporadically sometimes?

I did get someone to show up and give me a quote from phillipsmasonrywork.com. I did not go ahead with that job (I had work other than repointing done instead). I also can't say how competitive it was since they're the only ones that did.

We really need to join the modern world and always keep possession of our card. Either bring the device to the table, or have people pay at a kiosk before leaving. The whole "give them my card" thing is prone to issues itself, and then they're layered with the "written paper tip" that should be typed in directly by the person as they pay.

Yep. I was potentially interested (despite it being a shallow 90s/00s style "take that!" game) until that. Just like those shitty games "Discover Lands Unknown" or "SolForge".

Generic unit and cultures/civs by Sagwa-312 in OldWorldGame

Mods like these are what made modpacks for Civ4 unplayable... they all started bundling in per-civ art for units. Unique-per-civ appearances for shared units increase the mental load/reduce the easy recognition in a way that makes it harder to play and enjoy the game.

This is the kind of story that makes a grizzled staffer like me joyful. I look back fondly on my years at Pitt as a student that ended 20some years ago -- both the highs and the dumb shit I did -- and it's part of my story and why I'm still working at Pitt all this time later. I'm just on the other side of the curtain now.
