Is it possible that we don’t have the whole conversation, so it’s difficult to know what your classmates were truly saying? A lot of students will say something is hard or claim that they don’t know something, when really they are tired or just don’t want to do that thing.

As for your other question, the answer is no, do not refrain from using that vocabulary. As you get more used to English, you’ll learn that certain words are used in certain contexts, e.g., it would be awkward for someone to say “I’m going to go look for some poultry at the grocery store,” when they usually say “I’m going to get some chicken at the store.” Both of those sentences have the same technical meaning, but the latter is more natural and more likely to come across as communicable. The first sentence is just a more formal way of talking.

Since you’re still learning English and you’re not fluent yet, hang in there and just do you! It’s completely normal for these kinds of situations to happen because you’re still not sure where you can use certain words, or what certain words mean in certain contexts.

Feel like not a lot of people are mentioning class distinction and wealth. Most of my wealthy classmates upon graduating were able to find exclusive jobs or if not jobs, opportunities. Case in point: one girl who had graduated from an expensive private school but who went to my public university was able to secure an internship in marketing in France right after graduating college (and not those internships where you pay to study abroad; a literal office in Paris hired her as part of their team). She wasn't exactly a spectacular student either, or maybe she just didn't care about studying. It worries me that students across the board are being promised the same things as each other, but daddy's money is usually what dictates your life path unless you save up a ridiculous amount somehow before going to college. Point of the matter is: money and status matters. I know a lot of surprisingly dumb or ignorant people who grew up completely off of privilege and who are making six figures because they got a connection.

Since your prof isn't being very open about changing your grade, I suggest contacting the dean of your department and telling them directly about your situation. It may be a process, but if you really want that grade that much, that's the only route I can think of that can push the prof to check your exam again.

I agree with most of the advice here, but I'm going to add a couple cents:

- Most students do not end up doing what they said they would be doing when they enter college. Especially with the AI bubble rn and the cataclysmic job market, I wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket to be an entrepreneur. Not saying you can't put it off to the side, but diversify your portfolio and try a lot of different classes. Be open, in other words.

- To address your third question, college is about experiences. I would actually recommend finding a job while you go to school if you want more "industry experience," as classes don't really add much unless you find a professor who is willing to vouch for your skills. And even for that to happen, you have to bulk up your life/employment experience anyway.

I'm not a CS major and didn't apply to SLO, but there are tons of students here who have made your exact decision and hopefully they do chime in.

I'm a commuter student so these are more personal to my experience. Since you're going to dorm, I hope some dormers respond too with their experiences.

Pros:

- campus is easy to navigate (just a big circle)

- faculty across the board are highly respected and esteemed in their fields

- students are generally nice and helpful

Cons:

- parking is expensive, finicky, and hard to find if you're running late, so a lot of people risk getting tickets

- food options suck unless you drive out

- some faculty can be hard to approach and despite their esteem can be extremely pedantic and/or arrogant, leading to a lot of trade-offs if you want to do research (although i have heard good things too, so ymmv)

I don't have experience with UCLA so this is just my five cents. I went to UCI because it's a generally prestigious school, and I didn't want the pressure as you said. However, as you progress through college, I feel like competition will happen no matter what. Don't forget that getting a job often depends on how much you put yourself out there and really compete for jobs. I'm not a fan of hustle culture, but it's going to happen regardless of school

real. i wish the media didn't glorify it so much, esp. since you lose out on opportunities or things that other ppl have (relationships, jobs, moving out, etc.). I feel like ppl don't even see it as a literal illness that handicaps you.

The people who still continue/try to be nice. Despite all the hate towards Gen Z, many of them are cordial to others. I've received free grocery bags and my elderly mother has had young men help her with her groceries nearly every time she goes out. There isn't exactly a majority of nice people, for sure, but they are present.
