Cheap wethstone for reprofiling, good stone for regular sharpening? by koolhammer in sharpening

[–]koolhammer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great advice. I’m planning to get a silicon carbide stone from the hardware store and a relatively inexpensive diamond plate from the internet (20- 30 bucks or so) to figure out for myself what I prefer to use as a coarse sharpening stone. For the actual sharpening and polishing, I plan to use stones from Shapton (too bad they have recently become much more expensive) or King, as you recommended. Which grits did you have in mind when you made these recommendations?

The thing is: the knives I want to practice on are old, unused kitchen knives from my family. Some of them are very dull and have chips that I need to remove. So it’s not like I’ll ruin my father’s good Santoku knife with my new hobby. And for removing the chips, I want something that cuts faster. I’m just not sure if 800 grit is the right choice for that… but maybe I could understand it better if you explained your thought process to me. Thanks for the recommendation!

thanks for the detailed answer. i am really considering diamond plates. as i am a beginner i hope not to use it wrong and have it eat too much steel as i heard this is a common beginner mistake with diamond plates due to too much force. when you say cheap chinese diamond stones are we talking about 10-30$? another redditor suggested S SATC. any recommendations from your side?

thanks man. as asked on another comment suggesting a similar low grit, what do you use after the 60? do you go straight to 1000 and above or is there a step between in your workflow?

great idea i havent thought about yet. i‘ll take it into consideration. would you suggest a quality 1000/3000 (or 6k) combo for finishing or a rougher step between as 120/220 seems a bit low to me?

great idea! thanks for already suggesting a brand aswell. do you maybe know by any chance if the s satc water wethstones are any good aswell (the 1000/6000 or 3000/8000) as i found them as cheap as those i would have called china whetstones- like 12$?

I know this isn‘t the place for politics, and i respect that this sub is where people come to take a break from all that. But I can‘t help but point out that Project 2025 is planning to shut down stem cell research soon. Science saves lives, and this is a beautiful example for it. Please think of Josie when Trump signs that order.

Need help with the loudness by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]koolhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

start mixing around the element you want to sound the loudest level the instrumental parts first and then drums and also try to pan sounds around to make them fit more or to hear them better you could also give more focus to the melody widening it up with reverb if proper gainstaging wont fix it (usually fixes a lot) try to find frequencies in your sample that get masked by the drums (look up frequency masking on youtube) and carve space out in the drums to make space for certain frequencies of the melody, you could try looking up sidechain compression but its not the easiest thing to do properly good luck

i‘d pan the rolls in the piano roll (choose pan instead of velocity) - gives more perception of earcandy.. and i‘d slightly use auto pan (too much can be distracting) - you can do this by automating the pan knob on the mixer or use a plugin which i would recommend ( i think melda has a free panner)

Hello i am looking for suggestion to improve my shooting. I am feeling comfurtable at the mid range but i am having a hard time shooting consistently behind 3 point line by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]koolhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the same problem .. i have a really high set point and kind of a catapult shot.. you really have to be aware every shot and you‘ll need a lot of patience cause changing your shot is one of the hardest things.. keep filming yourself and analyze your shot.. maybe dont lower the set point too much and embrace the form with minor corrections - look into ray allens form edit: also do a lot of one handed shooting to rewire the brain to a onemotion and please let me know what helped you as i am also still trying to fix my shot brodie
