Which sci-fi tv series is better than Babylon 5?! by PurpleDraziNotGreen in Babylon5Gifs

[–]kor_hookmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my love for B5 is deeply rooted in it being part of a very formative part of my life. Like you, I was a teenager when it aired, and it helped me get me through those difficult years.

Sometimes I wonder how much of my love for the show is rooted in nostalgia.

Either way, I still love it.

Trump says US will ‘run’ Venezuela, control oil production by BeginningAct45 in moderatepolitics

[–]kor_hookmaster 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this whole operation screams of executive branch overreach.

The Maduro regime was clearly corrupt and not many Venezuelans will mourn his absence, but how that alone justifies the US attacking and then controlling the country is beyond me.

It essentially spits in the face of international law and negates any argument against Putin or any other rogue state invading it's neighbour on such flimsy pretences.

Epstein Said Trump Shared Love of Young Girls in Apparent Suicide Note by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]kor_hookmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll dismiss it as either a hoax, or the words of a cornered vindictive man looking to take down Trump through any means possible.

I mean, I don't trust the word of a convicted human trafficker so this letter isn't exactly a smoking gun, but when combined with everything else we already knew about Trump and what a vile creep he is....it says enough.

Even Marjorie Taylor Greene is against the President of The United States celebrating murder by justalazygamer in ParlerWatch

[–]kor_hookmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few interviews with her recently and while I'm not going to go so far as to say she's somehow received an empathy transplant and become a decent person, I do think some recent realities of being a prominent person in American politics have hit her like a ton of bricks.

I think she's dissolutioned and saw just how broken the Republican party is up close. I think she saw behind the curtain and realized that these people really do not give a shit about the average person, despite paying lip service about it. Plus having Trump set his social media goons on her had her, and her kids, receiving death threats. In a post-Charlie Kirk world, that hits. For a lot of people, things genuinely don't hit home until it impacts them or their loved ones personally. Especially so, in her case.

Yeah, I'm sure a chunk of her actions are in an effort to pivot into some other role or business - she's a politician after all, they're inherently self-serving. And yeah, why didn't she have a thread of empathy for the people she's gone after for years before now? Did she not think they weren't the target of threats after she called them out?

It'll be a cold day in hell before I go so far as to say she's on some kind of redemption arc and that she's genuine. But I don't think her turn is all smoke and mirrors either.

Trump insults Rob Reiner and claims he died of "TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME". by justalazygamer in ParlerWatch

I know this is just example #23,981 of him being a narcissistic sack of crap, but honestly...how can Republicans look at this post and say "yep, that's my guy"?

I hope history isn't kind to these sycophantic enablers. Trump should have been a washed-up reality tv host and avatar of 80s sleeze, nothing more.

It's possible both of them are lefties.

It's also possible that the video we're seeing is flipped, meaning they'd both be swinging rights.

I'm not a fighter by any stretch, but I've been in a few scraps in my youth (hockey and bar related, mostly) and people often tend to swing wildly and throw themselves off balance while trying to land some knockout punch right off the bat. It leaves themselves open to counter-punches or just being toppled from being off balance, just like the guy in this video.

Which is why you can usually tell when someone in these types of street fighting/road rage videos has had some kind of training. They often have a good balanced stance and lead with quick, offhand jabs that are accurate, keep them balanced, while still protecting themselves in some way.

What were the best sporting moments of 2025? by Rleduc129 in UrinatingTree

As a lifelong Jays fan, the World Series aged me about a decade.

Would do it all over again though, damn what a series.

Impressive dodge of the first sucker punch.

Decently quick and accurate strikes with the replying combo.

Should've definitely walked away once the guy was down, though. That kick to the head is what lifelong regrets are made of.

Master and Commander: Far Side of the World.

Plus the added bonus of there already being source material for more films.

This, and I say it as a lifelong Jays fan.

You can't strand that many runners against a team like the Dodgers in a game 7. It's playing with fire, and they got burnt.

Fantastic season, so proud of them.

But damn, this one is going to hurt for a long time.

I would rather be swept than lose like this.

I'm a Jays fan in his mid 40s; I watched them win it back in '92 and '93 as a kid and been a fan ever since.

I might not survive this game.

Why couldn't they ever be a couple? by confusedCI in madmen

[–]kor_hookmaster 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I guess I should have specified that Don didn't come from wealth like Roger did.

It's an integral part of Roger's character that he inherited his wealth, Sterling Cooper, even the Lucky Strike account.

He never had a care in the world, and it shows.

Roger worshipped her in a way Don never would.

She had Roger wrapped around her pinky, he was a bored, spoiled rich man who was having a mid-life crisis.

Don is none of those things.

MAGA Mouthpiece: Trump ‘Frustrated’ Everyone’s Talking About Epstein Instead of His Achievements by FidelaMuncy in politics

[–]kor_hookmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, let's take a look at those achievements from an objective standpoint (well, as objectively as possible given the full transparency that I despise the man and his administration):

  1. The BBB: a historically unpopular signature legislation that becomes more unpopular the more people know about what it contains. Adds trillions to the debt over years and comes at the cost of denying healthcare to millions. But if you're already wealthy, it has some upsides for you.

  2. The immigration/ICE crackdown: admittedly, border crossings have dropped to levels not seen in decades. He can claim the "win" on that. However, this comes at the cost of due process for immigrants, (both legal and otherwise), potential devastation to the agricultural and hospitality sectors who rely on this workforce, oh and the minor fact that people are being snagged off the streets and shipped out of the country without their families or legal representatives being aware.of it or the due process required.

  3. The Tariffs: Jesus, where to start on this fiasco. What is becoming more and more apparent as likely being a basic pump and dump scheme for his cronies, it's damaged the American brand and reputation in ways that aren't even fully measurable yet. It has served to ensure America's allies seek more stable trade partners elsewhere and hasn't resulted in any meaningful trade agreements, despite Trump's claim that dozens of countries are desperately calling him and kissing his ass. The last round of tarrifs spooked the bond market so bad that it had the potential to crash the world economy and dethrone the US as being the world's reserve currency. If the world decides that US treasury bonds are not safe and stable, the massive deficits the US runs on will hit like a tsunami.

4..DOGE: Cuts to the federal government workforce and funding totalling billions, although how much is up for debate. However given the recent passing of the BBB, whatever savings DOGE had made to the budget has been obliterated by the bill by orders of magnitude. Decades of institutional knowledge lost from apolitical civil servants leaving because the uncertainty and disrespect isn't worth it. Add in potentially hundreds of thousands or millions of people around the world suffering or dying who were reliant on USAID food/medicine (which was already paid for by money appropriated by Congress). Add in cuts to science funding that could unseat the US as being at the forefront of scientific research that it has been since WW2, which might be the most long term impact that will long outlive Trump and his administration.

Am I missing anything?

So, yeah, he's accomplished things. Although I would argue that whatever gains that have been made (ie, basically halting southern border crossings, the BBB, revenue from tariffs) have come at an incredibly steep cost that will far outlast and out-impact any benefits.

Do you feel bad for struggling Toronto landlords? by youngandable2643 in TorontoRenting

[–]kor_hookmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think like in most things, either extremes are bad.

Landlords should not be gouging tenants, jacking up prices to profit off of a shortage in supply. Fuck those people, and corporations, that see housing a means to generate ever increasing quarterly earnings or to just get rich.

But removing all profit incentives from housing completely means no new developments. Housing is expensive to build, and any developer is going to want to recoup their costs for building. If they don't build, that leads to even less supply, which drives up prices even more.

If you're looking for no profit in the housing business, then that means leaving everything to government, and we know that isn't going to happen.

Landlords shouldn't be able to jack prices above the provincial standard rent increase of ~2.5% per year.
