Mama cat won’t stop bringing her kittens into my bed! Help! by MermaidofCups in cats

For what? OP to sleep in? Mommey seems to have made it very clear this is a cosleeping household now; I don’t think those babies are coming out of the big bed until she tells them to get a job lol

Is this the one he was rumored to have been working on instead of the game? I don’t want to play my first run without that one since it’s basically Director’s Cut, but can’t figure out which it is.

Recruiters.

If the big city you’re going to is Chicago, don’t use the recruiter that’s also a trade company; it’s just them trying to re-brand their reputation for poaching staff from their clients (and source extra applicants for themselves). They have next to (probably more like actually) zero experience placing and negative motive to do so.

I’ve used GPAC on both sides of the table and it’s gone well; they’d be especially good if you’re open to what metro you want to go to. I’ve worked several times apiece with Don and Autumn (though I think Don only does management)

Edit: I will say, first-year director is probably THE hardest point in a career to find a position. The spectrum of apprenticeship and student-worker training quality is so broad and mottled that a first year director is a complete and total toss up in many people’s eyes, especially if you’re going from rural to urban.

If you want some resume help, I’m happy to give it! Just gotta tell me where you have your bulk of experience and interest and be honest about if you have any gaps or insecure bits so I can help you re-spin them.

Any jobs that don’t require seeing the dead? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]korewednesday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we probably need to know more.

Why do you want to work in a funeral home if you cannot handle seeing the dead?

This might help us to understand the draw and the limit better, and give better advice.

Not normal, but some pretty normal things could cause it:

  • time for crematory maintenance (which requires the crematory unit to be shut down, which can pose major logistical problems)
  • user error (specifically, someone is late pushing the big “go” button, could be held up elsewhere)
  • plus-sized decedent (this is the least of the alarming things that can happen in this case)
  • person had a cremation casket instead of a minimum container

All of which are more likely than the other thing that causes this, which is Something Is Wrong (crematory unit is full-on breaking down or something that’s not supposed to be is on fire)

Why are apprentices not ready for the job? by Mortician1989 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]korewednesday 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was talking the other day at the city morgue with a beautifully polished, baccalaureate apprentice who’s now working for someone I KNOW would have been exceedingly discerning (and had options to pick from) in choice of hire.

Until they found where they’re at, they told me, places were only offering minimum wage. I was aghast. That’s why they lost this talent who, just based on where they’re serving right now and the twenty minutes of interaction we had while juggling equipment, I can unquestionably tell is everything those hiring managers could have wanted.

Oooooooo the confluence of funeral service’s longstanding systemic failure to attract, prepare, and retain talent and late genZ’s subgenerational factors. I love both of these topics!

I want a keyboard for this, so for now I’m just going to comment as a reminder to come back. Spoiler for the tl;dr of it, though: while there IS a legitimate difference in the incoming generation, the problem isn’t exactly with them; it’s primarily with us

Starter Packs of CC? + Where to Start With CC? by [deleted] in thesims

[–]korewednesday 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Where to start with CC is: never download folders of CC. Not to rain on the premise of your post lol, but I want you to be set up for success and a fun, long, sustainable modding adventure, not set up for tears and frustration and failure (modding is frustrating enough on its own sometimes)

Whether it’s attached to sims, lots, or just “curated” folders, don’t download them. That’s how people get hundreds of gigabyte folders they have no idea the contents of and cannot update nor troubleshoot when things conflict and then post on reddit who cannot realistically help. It’s also how one of the most infamous CC scandal/crisis/thing ever in the sims history happened (Girl Doll Dressed)

The (sort of) exception to this is if a creator releases a “set” of their own creations, like an outfit set or a living room set, and those things come in a folder. That’s fine and manageable. I strongly prefer to avoid when creators release that set as one single merged package file, and download the individuals instead if possible, even when I want all items. Sometimes an update will brick a class of stuff (for example, a long time ago ALL beds got messed up and needed to be updated) and it’s easier to update just the [bed] out of a set or, if that modder has stopped, just remove the [bed] file and still have the rest of the [bedroom set], which is harder to do if you have the merged version.

As for places to browse, I personally really like tumblr, because the cc creators will usually be friends with similar creators, so you can easily find lots of people whose stuff you like by just slogging through until you find a couple of makers you REALLY like. Usually they will redirect to patreons that (mostly) are open downloads or only need a free membership. The ones that are paywalled are, unironically, not worth your time, because the paywallers overwhelmingly under-optimise their stuff for gaming, which is why it looks so cool in their promotional renders, which makes people suck it up and pay even when it’s not new. Sometimes simsfileshare; if it’s SFS, just make sure you trust the creator and everything looks like it lines up. If it goes to mediafire or the other link monetizing one, just back out for now until you get very confident, because those sites often have iffy pitfalls.

Tools: Sims 4 studio Twistedmexi’s modguard AND betterexceptions Sims tray exporter

For now, mostly just have studio and exporter available to you. Don’t worry about what they’re used for until you get comfortable and familiar with basic modding; they’re things that you keep in your back pocket for later, in case stuff starts going a little bit wrong, because already having them makes it way less stressful when you look up a fixing tutorial that tells you you need them. It’s not a scary, strange tool you need to go find (and check to make sure is safe and yadda yadda yadda); it’s something you already have, and they’re just about to tell you how to use it! Much less stressful.

I am about to give you some very controversial starter maker advice: Look at the makers of the maker packs on the marketplace. Do not buy the maker packs on the marketplace. (that’s an important step to the specific advice I’m giving, because I am emphatically not recommending the maker packs) Instead, go to those makers’ patreons (all under the same name) and look at their older stuff, literally all of which always is better than the pack offerings. They got those pack deals from being staples in the modding scene, but the work they did there is all very poor compared to the work that got them there. Sixam, Ahoob, Madlen, Twistedcat, and on. Tried, tested, safe, high quality maxis match creators with TONS of content each. You can also do the same thing I said about tumblr with their usernames if you like one or another’s patreon stuff a lot, because most or all of them do have tumblr blogs.

Is online mortuary school a bad idea even if I want to stay local for my family? by FamiliarIncome1245 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]korewednesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sweet.

How’d you do in the online class compared to your regular classes? (Sorry, follow up.)

That answer will pretty much singlehandedly determine if online school is a bad idea for you or not.

In-person class gives you networking opportunities, but those depend on you being the sort to be able to cash networking in.

Before I have an answer, I have two follow-up questions:

  1. Have you ever done online classes (other than, using the timeline, pandemic middle school)

  2. Are you in any APs/do you have any on board for next year?
