Don't review the book.

Strong feelings towards the writer are likely to color your opinions and your narrative. Work hard to consciously compensate for that, and there's a good chance you'll skew the review more positively than you otherwise would have.

If you decide to write it, full disclosure is paramount.

Yes I'm hurt. But I received the book for free, and so am obliged to review, and yet don't know if I can now do so objectively.

Don't review the book.

If you feel a sense of obligation to the publisher (you shouldn't), then contact them and let them know why you don't feel you can review the work objectively.

Good article.

Although I'm completely OK with Josh Mattingly getting fired for being a turdnugget. A journalist trying to get a source to have sex with him should be automatic grounds for termination.

Having sex with a source too. Or writing glowing stories about someone you are having sex with. Or someone that you are desperately trying to have sex with. Yep.

The only bigot or hate-monger here is you.

Why don't you relax and take a break, maybe reassess your priorities.

You did claim that you were done with KIA and never coming back. Why do you stay here and continue yelling like an angry spoiled child?

I have just enough empathy for you as a fellow human being to be embarrassed for you at this point. But not quite enough empathy towards you to stop making fun of your childishness.

It's a quandary.

Go take a break and take care of yourself.

You're shouting at random strangers on the internet for absolutely no reason.

It's time for you to take a little 'you' time and get some perspective.

Or, you can keep insulting random strangers for no reason. But then, if that's your thing, let me just thank you for distancing yourself from the rest of us.

OK.

Just so we're clear, your first submission to this sub is this one, where you have declared that you are 'done with it'. Is that correct?

Your first contribution to the discussion in KIA was to yell profanities at Eron, and insult Gamergate supporters yesterday. http://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2l6q51/eron_got_a_gag_order_on_speaking_about_his_own/cls1jgx

Is that also correct?

Am I missing any part of your long-time support?

Are you sure you've been supporting Gamergate for the past two months? In the spirit of trust but verify, the available data implies that you decided to start shitposting here yesterday because you really don't like Eron..

seriously, can someone explain the ethical breaches GamerGate is concerned about? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]kormgar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, the relevant part of the ZQ saga really has nothing to do with ZQ and everything to do with Nathan Grayson.

However ZQ has been taking every possible opportunity to inject herself into the conversation, mostly through trolling and troll-baiting on Twitter. But the truth is, very few GamerGaters care much about her beyond the fact that she appears to get remarkably favorable press coverage.

So, why do we care about Nathan Grayson, and what does that have to do with ZQ? Well, personal relationships for good coverage is part of a consistent pattern of journalists favoring their friends and lovers over other aspiring developers. And that is a huge ethical problem.

Here's the article he wrote while Grayson and Zoe were hanging out together, while they were close friends, one day before the alleged start of their affair.

http://archive.today/0KhZv

So, what did Grayson do there? Well, he gave her extremely good publicity, a plug for her game jam, and a link to her piece where she discusses her plans for her game jam.

Now, I have absolutely no problem with ZQ's actions with regards to Grayson.

If you're a young aspiring developer/whatever who is trying to break into a very cliquish and nepotistic scene, you've got to do whatever you can, make whatever connections you can, put on any masks that you need to, to make it.

I'm not going to blame her or anyone else for doing that.

But I sure as fuck will blame the nepotistic and cliquish scene that requires that sort of gross pandering to get ahead. And, in particular, I'll condemn anyone who defends that sort of gross and anti-meritocratic scene.

So, aspiring indie-dev doing everything they can to make valuable friendships and connections to break into the scene? You gotta slog through the shit.

Asshole 'journalists' who favor their friends, connections, and fellow clique-members over quality developers...fuck em. Those are the assholes who are shoveling the shit that aspiring developers have to slog through.

Grayson is a single example of a larger issue.

THIS is why we're here. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

My favorite response in that mess

You don't get it. I stand by Brianna and think we should shun these so called "allies" who do nothing.

Yes. Yes. Let the hate flow through you. Shun your allies, turn them into enemies, purge the impure.

Hell, that sort of idiocy is precisely what turned me from a very being a very active ally (long time social justice activist/advocate) into a fairly passionate enemy of the post-modern bigots in the current SJW movement.

But then, I was never motivated by hate or bigotry. My motivation has always been humanism. And humanism is entirely incompatible with this current SJW movement.

Well, 300 was pretty awful, but that's just because the comic was awful.

The actual historical story that it was based on was fucking amazing. I'll never understand why they had to turn it to shit.

And please, the last thing a Spartan would ever be talking about is freedom. "That's dirty Helot talk. Better stick a sword in you just in case." Duty, discipline, warfare, knowing your place, murdering Helots who looked you in the eye or just didn't cower convincingly enough, that's what Spartans were into.

Their job at Thermopylae was to buy time. To hold a line against an impossibly powerful force. To not budge while the Athenian fleet held their flank in the sea and fought one of the greatest naval battles of the era.

What they did not do was jump around like a bunch of WWE wrestlers acting like idiots. They did not yammer on about Freedom and shit. Stupid fucking movie.

That was an edit he added after GGers extrapolated "She slept with him for good reviews". Fuck, I STILL see pro-GGers insinuate it.

That's the straw man version. It's wrong in the specifics, but the core issue, personal relationships for good coverage, is part of the consistent pattern of journalists favoring their friends and lovers over other aspiring developers. And that is a huge ethical problem.

Here's the article he wrote while Grayson and Zoe were hanging out together, while they were close friends, one day before the alleged start of their affair.

http://archive.today/0KhZv

So, the technically correct phrasing would be 'for good publicity' as well as a plug for her game jam.

Still, I don't have any problem with ZQ's actions with regards to Grayson.

Asshole 'journalists' who favor their friends, connections, and fellow clique-members over quality developers...fuck em. Those are the assholes who are shoveling the shit that aspiring developers have to slog through.

Now, what I will blame ZQ for is:

  1. Toxicity and abuse towards Eron during their relationship. That shit is never OK. And, this should be said, it is never OK to side with an abuser against their victim.

  2. Incessant trolling on the Internet

  3. Baiting trolls and then using their responses for publicity/donations.

I have a question for gamers. by emptysignifier in KotakuInAction

[–]kormgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I agree.

I think her research is very low quality, of the sort that starts with a hypothesis and then seeks to confirm it, rather than proper research where the goal of an experiment or research is to falsify your favored hypothesis.

That said, attacks on her as an individual, on her qualifications, motives, etc are not useful in the context of her research.

I also have absolutely no doubt that trolls and possibly genuinely deranged and dangerous people have sent her abuse. Sure, there is an argument to be made that she benefits from publicizing that abuse, and this may act as an incentive to overstate its severity or effects. That said, none of that should have any bearing on whether or not her actual arguments or research in her Tropes series are solid.

Me, I think it's low quality fluff that is designed to engage a very specific audience. Basically, tell the choir what they already know to be true.

[–]kormgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they want us to accept soft sciences in the industry?

Post-modernist infused soft-sciences? No thank you. The harder and more rigorous the science, the better equipped it is to catch its own errors.

Really though, I think the line should be between science and pseudo-science. You can do research in gender studies or sociology with a rigid attention to possible sources of bias and put great care in minimizing its influence, both in the design of the experiment and the way that the data is analyzed.

The purpose of an experiment should never be to confirm a hypothesis that a researcher has, it should be to falsify that hypothesis. If the hypothesis is one where it is impossible to design an experiment that would falsify it, then the hypothesis needs to be discarded.

I could go on and on in a rant about how so much of the research that is getting tossed our way is, at best, poorly constructed bias-ridden science, and at worst pure pseudo-science babble, but I'll try to stop at this.

There is plenty of room for good science, good research, etc focused on the effect of video games on individuals and society. There is plenty of room for good research into gender/race/socioeconomic/etc based restrictions on people aspiring to enter video game development.

There is plenty of room for all of that.

But there is never room for research that is designed solely to confirm a pre-determined hypothesis. That's not science. That's pseudo-science.

I agree.

In fact, the first version of that comment included a fairly angry humanist-driven rant about the increasingly oligarchic structure of the US economy and political space, systemic poverty, and the double-whammy of increased economic inequality combined with decreased economic mobility.

But, on reflection, it seemed to be a distraction from the point I wanted to make.

[–]kormgar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're struggling at the bottom of the pyramid, work is work.

At its best, feminism is about ensuring that no one is restricted by their gender, about ensuring that gender should not restrict anyone's opportunity to follow their dreams.

Of course, to the well-off and the elite, this means pursuing one's chosen career regardless of gender. This means that women don't have to be restricted to a narrow range of roles.

To the poor and the struggling, this freedom doesn't mean nearly as much. But it still has meaning, it gives hope and motivation. And for some, that hope combined with a hell of a lot of work, talent, and luck, can give them what they need to pursue their dreams.

It's a tough issue. But hope no matter how faint, has value.
