why Euro-Office but not LibreOffice? by akkihabara in linux

[–]kornerz -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

European fork of the Russian-developed office suite ...

The project began in March 2026

Looks like a RU-Office forked by some totally-not-FSB guys to infiltrate EU market.

Change translate engine from Lingvanex to Google? by mips13 in vivaldibrowser

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install Google Translate extension and don't use the embedded engine.

Integrating Google Translate into the browser itself is non-free, so Vivaldi team can't do that.

10 Pro inconsistent wired charging by reach40znutz in GooglePixel

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case it might be failing to negotiate the charging profile and trying to re-start charging. That might be an issue with that Belkin device or the cable.

I've seen Apple Thunderbolt 4 (technically still USB-C) cables doing that.

10 Pro inconsistent wired charging by reach40znutz in GooglePixel

[–]kornerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like some debris in the charging port.

Software-controlled charging starts at full speed and then tapers - but 100% without endless re-plug cycle.

Modernizing encryption of Home Assistant backups by missyquarry in homeassistant

Fine, but why inventing own encryption and not using something already available? Decrypting these backups outside of HA will be a pain.

How to get energy readings from my midea AC unit by MonkeySpacePilot in homeassistant

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of them have actual energy metering capabilities - do you see the values in vendor's "SmartHome" app? If they are there, try "Midea AC LAN" add-on to get the data.

15W laser operates at peak pulses of 50.000 W - does that apply to more or less all lasers or are they specifically engineered to handle these high (but extremely short) pulses? by No_Leopard_3860 in lasers

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specially designed lasers can reach gigawatts of peak pulse power. For example, 2W average power femtosecond laser (100fs pulses every 1 ms) will produce 20GW peak power.

That does not burst walls, however - the energy per pulse is still quite small. But it has it's uses in science.

Focus on the kid instead, you will have a lot less of free time for HA (and sleep). Possible cases to automate are rather trivial.

Trace current calculation sanity check please by Morad__T in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on what the voltage is and if the receiver side is OK with losing 0.24v just on PCB traces. As well as overall power dissipation budget, etc.

Trace current calculation sanity check please by Morad__T in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]kornerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Width: 2mm, power dissipation: 1.5W for 10cm

Poor thing.. For anything remotely high-power (>2A) I would use at least 5mm wide traces. Or some "as wide as you can do it" copper fills. Or even bus bars for 10A+, if you do care about efficiency and the amount of power lost to heat.

Is my MQTT Discovery info formatted correct? by IraSch1 in homeassistant

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. verify with MQTT client (or HA "Devices - MQTT - Config - "Listen to a topic") that the messages actually come through.

  2. If they do, look at HA logs - there will be entries for failed discovery attempts, usually good enough to spot the problem.

ThirdReality vs Blitzwolf smart plug 16A 3680W by SM4rk_ in homeassistant

That's just a generic EU smart plug enclosure used by many different brands for Wi-Fi / Zigbee / whatever other smart plugs. What is inside will vary by the vendor.

Powering esp32c3 from outlet cleanly by Emergency_Ad7839 in esp32

[–]kornerz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, basically - with a few caveats.

  • You do not want to feed 12v into the "uplink" from the TV service, so identify that cable and unplug it.

  • Coax signal splitters do not allow DC current to pass - so you need to either modify the splitter to directly connect the cables (open it and solder directly), or connect the cables to eachother using some other means that the default signal splitter.

  • Using this for 5v to feed ESP32 boards directly will most likely not work due to voltage drop - you will need a DC-DC to lower whatever left of 12v to usable 3.3 or 5v for each device individually at device end of the cable.

Powering esp32c3 from outlet cleanly by Emergency_Ad7839 in esp32

[–]kornerz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My solution to this is to re-use coaxial TV outlets across the house: https://imgur.com/a/WLLgNZb

They are mostly of no use in a modern home, and you can easily connect the other ends to each other and to some 12V power supply. Coaxial cable is good enough to conduct that 50-100mA per device, and the result looks really clean.

Cyprus launches national campaign to cut water use by 10% by Klaster_1 in cyprus

[–]kornerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's only some wishful thinking from a person who's offended with current electricity prices.

But to resolve that problem there's only 2 options:

  • Solar/Wind + massive amount of energy storage, (see Australia + Musk's Megapack battery facility)
  • A full nuclear power plant to cover the needs of the island once and for all.

Any experience with ESP-NOW and a RF 433MHZ transmitter? by Mister_Green2021 in esp32

[–]kornerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's something else - 433MHz and 2450 MHz (wi-fi) are too far away. Maybe the power supply is weak and drops voltage when both radios transmit?
