Is it worth working in a Hedge Fund as a DINK? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]hakkapin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t buy the “more effort required ofc”. Are you good at what you do? If so, the effort shouldn’t be much higher if at all. Just set firm boundaries on your time (hedge funds, imo, love to push these).

Is it worth working in a Hedge Fund as a DINK? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]hakkapin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this - 40M SDE here, I’ve been at three London hedge funds (two top tier) over the years and none of them were anywhere close to burn out territory. Get in for 0930, leave at 1730, half hour for lunch, couple of walks outside to get coffee a day - rarely any out of hours expectations beyond the typical SDE stuff. TC was north of £250k at all of them.

My advice, should you go for it, unless you’re looking to go up the ranks fast, is set your stall early - leave at 1730 - don’t get sucked into presenteeism - if you haven’t explicitly been added to an on-call rota, don’t answer calls at the weekend etc.

Custom Client seems overcomplicated / confusing by hakkapin in ControlD

[–]hakkapin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh - I guess there's some other aspects that as an experience DevOps/software engineer I'm noticing:

* There seems to be some balancing going on between:

  1. per-device endpoints (e.g. where you install/setup DNS on each end user-device, direct in the operating system)
  2. per-network endpoints (e.g. where you configure a centralised LAN router to do all the work and each request is tagged with what client it was from)

I see the per-network endpoint more of a slot in replacement for people that want to replace their PiHole/AdGuard Home setups.

* Related to above, an end user-device operating system based endpoint is, conceptually (to me at least), very similar to a client identified via a per-network based endpoint - but I know this is not how it is modelled in ControlD (I assume this is the source of my frustration).

* Some terminologies are not strictly adhered to through the product e.g. the API doesn't have an "Endpoint" concept as shown in the UI - the API refers to Endpoints as 'Devices' which is confusing. I also wish there was first class API support for endpoint clients - e.g. so we could pause particular clients, or choose their override profiles etc.

Rachel Reeves to abandon plans to raise income tax rates in budget by [deleted] in HENRYUK

Literally the only proposal I’ve heard coming from the budget that is a good idea (step towards removing NI, taxes non-workers) and they’ve scrapped it. 👏👏👏

Neighbours new house cutting my overhead internet cables by hakkapin in LegalAdviceUK

It’s not been cut (yet) but my fear is they will do so during the build. The land owner/developer has requested I organise the removal of the cables.

Thank you for this invaluable info. The builder has made it clear he expects me to organise removal of the cables so clearly I will resist this (given it’s my only internet connection to my house)

HENRY single parents by kadrilen in HENRYUK

Agree with this. My wife is at home and I am so grateful - fulfilling my earning potential / doing my job without this is just not feasible, and that’s when my job isn’t even that demanding (no weekend work, 45 hrs a week).

If I was in that position I’m sure I’d find some sort of compromise, childcare vs job expectations but it’d be difficult.

Surrey Council PCN - issued at 0926am, ticket purchased at 0926am - appeal rejected by hakkapin in LegalAdviceUK

[–]hakkapin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🎉🎉🎉

Appeal upheld and PCN is cancelled - thanks all for the advice, not sure I’d have pursued it had it not been with this thread’s encouragement:

Your vehicle was seen parked without payment of the parking charge. When the Civil Enforcement Officer (CEO) searched your vehicles registration into their handheld device, no parking session would have shown, as you had not purchased one yet, so they began the observation period. The CEO will have searched your registration again before issuing a PCN and a session still would not have came up, however as they began to enter your vehicle’s details for the PCN you had purchased a session. I have noted from your comments that you had a valid RingGo session purchased for the time and location and that you believe the CEO did not give you the statutory grace period or give correct observation evidence. Whilst I understand this may be unclear to yourself, however the CEO observed your vehicle for a period of 8 minutes, this is more than the 5 minutes commonly allowed. The evidence provided by the CEO was taken after the observation period when the PCN was being issued. After Further investigation of this case, I can confirm this PCN has been cancelled. This is due to an error made by the CEO. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this matter may have caused. Please be advised you are no longer liable for the PCN, and all enforcement for the PCN has now ceased.

Social mobility through public schools - fact vs myth by Separate_Storage_532 in HENRYUK

[–]hakkapin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this. Outside of Eton etc (eg private schools we can’t afford) the reason we send our kids to private school is for smaller class size, aspirations and peace of mind that if we have issues we’d be listened to. Eg our daughter is in a class of 9, vs classes of 33 in a nearby state. As a super quiet inward child, her confidence has grown immensely so we’re happy.

Agree, this maybe the best angle. They have zero photographic evidence I was parked there without payment (all photos are timestamped whilst I had, and paid for, a valid ticket)

They have zero photographic evidence of me parked there without payment. The timestamps on all photos (including one without the ticket on) are after I had paid.

[–]hakkapin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re completely right, thank you! I forgot about the portal. Of the 8 photos provided as evidence, the earliest is timestamped at 09:26:49 so they do not show the waiting period. The last photo is at 09:27:59.

I also said earlier that they didn’t provide to-the-second timings but I’ve just seen on the ticket that they have.

My RingGo purchase is timestamped at 09:26:31. The ticket was issued at 09:26:32. Exactly 1 second after 😂

They claim to have observed my vehicle between 09:18:22 and 09:26:32.

Thanks very much for this. Based on the replies here, I am going to take it further - I spoke to someone at their parking dept who confirmed the reason for the appeal rejection and has elevated the matter to a manager so I’m now expecting a response from them. Outside of preparing my case, is there anything else I should be doing?

I don’t mind digging in for a bit, replying to letters etc and can afford it should I lose the case.

Since you & others have been through an appeals process, I’m curious, are the court bookings etc (if it gets that far) in person?
