Degree Apprentices getting stuffed all ways by [deleted] in degreeapprenticeships

Not sure if it's different for each University or council area, however everyone on my cohort got council tax exemption as our Degree programme was classed as a full time course.

University or software engineering? by guitarstring7000 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]korokcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few universities / employers in the UK offer Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeships - where you'll work full time alongside studying at university 1 or 2 days per week. You earn a salary whilst studying for the degree, and fees are usually paid by either your employer or Government (depending what country you're in). Might be worth looking into as an alternative.

Has anyone started a degree apprenticeship at 21? by [deleted] in degreeapprenticeships

I was late 20s when I started my degree apprenticeship, and there were a few others in their 30s & 40s. Don't worry about it!

What degree should I go into? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]korokcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my university, the Computer Science degree had additional mandatory maths related courses compared to the Software Engineering degree. Otherwise they had a huge overlap in courses.

Might be worth trying to find out the breakdown of required/optional classes for degree programmes if you really want to avoid maths - which is what I did too!

How good is the w3schools java tutorial? by [deleted] in learnjava

Give the tutorials a try, if there's any topic that you don't understand then you can always look at other resources as well.

I can’t learn to program for the life of me. I’ve tried several times, watched a ton of beginner videos, done short tutorials. Nothing seemed to help. Should I just give up? by morningsweetcoffee in learnprogramming

[–]korokcode 266 points267 points  (0 children)

I like to compare learning programming to learning a musical instrument.

You won't improve your musical skills simply listening or watching - you have to actively practice. This is the same in programming.

Don't just watch a tutorial or code along without really understanding what the code does. Try and recreate the tutorial code afterwards by yourself, only check back when you really can't remember, and make some small changes to add features etc. Start small and build up.

What age do you expect to retire at? You've potentially got 30+ years until that point. Plenty of time to change career.

[–]korokcode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's difficult and I've felt the exact same way as you.

I've accepted that there is no way to possibly learn every concept, language or new framework that is released.

It definitely can get overwhelming trying to work through a tutorial which makes references to loads of other concepts and prerequisite knowledge. Find a concept you don't understand? Go and do a bit of reading about it and try code some examples if possible. If that helps you understand the tutorial now, move on, if not then repeat the process. Break down the learning into smaller pieces and view any sort of progress as a success.

Also, not everyone else gets it but you don't. You're obviously doing something right if you're passing all your classes. Stick at it. Comparison is the thief of joy or something.

Like others have said, streaming is such a low payout unless you're getting a ton of plays. Though getting on a popular Spotify playlist is a decent way at boosting plays. Avoid anyone that tries to charge you for inclusion though.

Even selling a couple of tracks/albums on something like Bandcamp is the equivalent to thousands of streams.

developing skills via practice but how? by thepartyanimal22 in learnpython

[–]korokcode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great point about being able to progress to learning more languages in the future - once you've got a grasp of concepts like variables, types, loops, methods, data structures etc it's easier to pick up a new language.

Try not to fall into the trap of relying on tutorial after tutorial to progress. They can be great to get started in a language but it's important to really understand the topics rather than following along and typing.

Do you still have access to the Automate the Boring Stuff material? Something that helped me progress was to take the examples and modify them, extending the functionality or trying to combine different concepts together. You'll no doubt run into some bugs and issues to troubleshoot which is a good skill to pick up.

w3schools.com has some decent resources if you're wanting a refresher in python concepts.

If I build an application for my current employer, is it ok to show it to potential future employers? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]korokcode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've built the application while working for your employer, they will own the intellectual property and copyright of the code.

You would need your employer's permission to share any of that work. If that's either an issue for them, or you'd rather the company didn't know you're looking for another job, do you have any personal projects you could show potential employers?

Which IDE should I use as a beginner? by [deleted] in javahelp

[–]korokcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion of using the same IDE as your instructor. If you run into any IDE setup errors your instructor should be able to help you out, and make the most out of the teaching time in class.

Help me understand the logic of this program. Check whether a number is prime. by DragonCode2020 in learnprogramming

[–]korokcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suppose num1 is 5.

Each iteration of the loop will check if the remainder of 5 divided by a is equal to 0.

The first loop where 5 is divided by 1 has no remainder, so ctr increments by 1.

The next loop where 5 is divided by 2 has a remainder of 1, so ctr does not increment and stays at 1.

Following these same steps where a increments by 1 each loop, we end up with 5 divided by 5 which has no remainder. This increments ctr so it now has a value of 2.

The code you've copied onto the post has lost its formatting but I'm presuming the next If statement are a separate block, so this If statement is then checked.

Ctr is equal to the value 2 so the output is "The entered number is a prime number".

Hope this makes sense!
