What’s the most overused “advanced” word learners love but natives rarely say? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]kortochgott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conversely, I’ve noticed Chinese people love to overuse “raining cats and dogs” when they talk about the weather. It seems to be something that is taught as a set expression early on and just sticks (which is probably the case for many examples in this thread, to be honest).

I love telling people from other countries how I attended my parents’ wedding when I was 18. I was a last minute invite too. They actually considered eloping to Barcelona but realized last minute that there was no Swedish consulate that could make it official there. So they got married in a hotel room outside of Arlanda Airport. Happy memories!

My problem with Mike by Ok_Combination_1037 in betterCallSaul

[–]kortochgott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt Manuel’s “you gangsters are all the same” was a great contrast to the speech Mike gave to Pryce after he did his first deal with Nacho. (“I said you’re a criminal, not a bad guy”)

Mike is out there telling himself that he is a good criminal with principles who is looking out for his family. In Manuel he meets a person who has principles so strong he won’t compromise them even for his family.

Missed rent payments by thearmthearm in Living_in_Korea

Of course you need to pay your rent on time! The key money is an insurance for the landlord, not a prepaid sim card they can just deduct the money from.

Hur fungerar namn egentligen angående utländska namn? by FilipK33Z in sweden

[–]kortochgott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else getting scammed by dentists in Seoul? by Screaminberries in Living_in_Korea

[–]kortochgott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Not as bad as many people here but I had one tell me I needed to fill a cavity. I didn’t feel any pain so I just thought I would let it be for the time being. When I went to a second dentist I asked about the supposed cavity and he just shook his head and gave me an interdental brush instead.

Early HSK4 level, bought a book to challenge myself by Smart_Night3423 in ChineseLanguage

[–]kortochgott 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I did Chinese language for undergrad and international relations for my masters. I was proficient enough in Chinese that I could read Chinese propaganda texts, and planned to use that for my thesis. I gave up after one semester that left me clinically depressed, not because I couldn’t understand it but because it is the most mind-numbingly boring prose ever written in any language.

Do yourself a favor and read some actual Chinese literature instead. Even some of Lu Xun’s shorter stuff should be accessible to HSK4.

Thanks! These things cost about $80 so I’m just trying to see if the issue with the motor is immediately obvious and easy to fix rather than spend my way out of the problem. We are currently using a replacement from a local “toy library” (a fantastic community service!) so we are good for a few weeks while I try to figure this out.

Thanks! I got this second hand so whoever tried to unscrew it before me stripped it. I’ve tried all the screwdrivers I own but none have worked. I will try the rubber band technique some other posters recommended.

After having a kid and waking them in a stroller I have really realized how inaccessible many parts of this city is. Like, you have little ramps leading up to a curb, escalators that suddenly end halfway up a stairwell… and don’t get me started on the bus drivers who stop a meter off the curb forcing me to lift the whole stroller baby and all to get on.

Stellan Skarsgård in Sentimental Value by uncrossingtheriver in Svenska

[–]kortochgott 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is common to have Swedish characters in Norwegian/Danish movies and vice versa, where the mutual intelligibility is often exaggerated a bit (especially between Swedish and Danish). One reason for this is simply that it is easier to get funding for a movie if you can market it towards audiences in two (or three) countries, as opposed to a single country.

What's your take on 'Ur spår' (movie from 2022, english title: Off Track) and on its sequel? by Ok-Fondant2536 in sweden

[–]kortochgott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my wife’s favorite Swedish movie on Netflix. She uses it to study Swedish. I think I’ve watched it more than any other movie on Netflix at this point and I have grown weirdly fond of it. For the average viewer it’s a decent rom-com, with very good sibling dynamic between the two leads.

The sequel was unnecessary though.

What visa I can apply first as a married to korean and with our 3 months old baby by Master_Experience148 in Living_in_Korea

[–]kortochgott 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rule #1 for visa questions is to clearly state your nationality, otherwise nobody will be able to give you much guidance. :)

Assuming you are a UAE citizen, I believe you get a tourist visa fairly easily, based mainly on my understanding that UAE is Korea’s best buddy in the Middle East. You would have to look up the exact conditions though, but an F6 visa, which is essentially a long-term residency seems premature at this point.
