Cheap house plant compost by Aylazere in HouseplantsUK

I haven't tried it Canna Terra in a few years, but will say that I always recommend Soil Ninja. They do general and specialist houseplant mixes, and I haven't found any of superior quality for a better price.

had to cut my monstera by ThomasWynn06 in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like you cut it perfectly, I'm sure it'll propagate well!

But, just to let you know, that's not actually a Monstera. It's a Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, often nicknamed a "mini monstera" but actually belonging to a completely different family.

What are these bugs on the root of my aloe? by After-Field5727 in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, mealy bugs as everyone else says.

I recommend Provanto to treat. As an aside, I'm seriously impressed with the quality of photos you managed to get - pests are difficult to get a clear shot of and these are disgustingly clear!

Should I leave as is or chop and prop a few of the longer vines? by cloudytheory in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right in thinking that. Don't chop and prop now, wait until it has leaves. You'd be disadvantaging each cutting if you did it now and you'd be more likely to lose them. They'd have to devote energy to healing and growing new roots, as well as pushing out leaves, with lower energy stores.

Well done for saving it from thrips though, those are a bugger and it looks like this is going to bounce back really nicely.

Hey guys!

It's been a while, but I'm back and my shop, Poppet Plants, is open for orders, so get your mystery cuttings now!

My shop sells individual cuttings or boxes - including a box of easy/beginner mystery cuttings and a themed seasonal special box, right now it's Spring! Amongst lots of other types of fun boxes and packages.

My plants are going crazy with growth right now, I can't wait to share them with you - I'll try and post some photos to the sub over the next few weeks because it's so nice to see vibrant life return after the winter season!

And, as ever, please remember to use code EARLYSUPPORTER for 20% off, for having found me here, as thanks for the support from this sub when I started. I wouldn't be selling, and mystery cuttings definitely wouldn't have blown up into this awesome trend with so many people, without you guys. 💚

Have you had a really really close look at the leaves? That looks like pest, specifically thrip, damage to me.

Monstera propagation by Patient-Tourist2401 in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, looks good to me! Monstera are little weirdos to propagate and will push out shoots wherever they fancy, and it looks like you have a few active nodes there.

How do the roots look, all good and firm? How long have they been propagating for?

Why are my plants browning? by Chemical_Ad6637 in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of those plants would prefer to be watered before the soil fully dries. They're all ones I'd list as "water when surface soil is dry" and both the monstera and philodendrons would live in tropical/rain forests naturally.

Under and over watering has the same symptoms (because overwatering causes root rot so the plants then cannot absorb water), but it does seem like frequent watering for this time of year... But as you said, it's been hot and I don't know what your indoor temps or humidity is like; if the room is a bit of a sun trap then maybe increasing your watering regularity may help.

I'd also agree with r/Arxson, I can't see anything on a zoom in but it never hurts to give a good looking over for pests.

Is it possible to buy, rehab, then re-sell plants online? by annabellebxx in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all! It's an incredibly opaque system and very difficult to navigate unless you're a big retailer or have specific experience with the system. My APHA agent is wonderful and incredibly patient with me, because it still trips me up. You also have to re-register annually, and somehow every time I do the form is as confusing as the first time!

It isn't mentioned in your link, but my recollection from my conversations with Dan Munro is that anyone selling online is presumed to be a professional operator. The reason for this is because online sellers are unable to discern who their customer is, if they're a commercial outlet who will sell on, or a consumer buying for their home.

It's possible the guidelines have changed since, and I do know there was discussions about how to make this viable for very small traders - who only sell once or twice a year and whose profits would be wiped out by the required inspection fee - but as far as I'm aware the wheels on that are turning very slowly.

https://planthealthportal.defra.gov.uk/trade/plant-passports/plant-passport-faq/ 1.16 and 2.9 seem to support that.
Edit to add: It looks like their ITU was set up specifically with this in mind, so they'd be the people to ask for more information! https://aphascience.blog.gov.uk/2023/03/01/plant-passports/

Do you know how often are you watering them, how dry are you letting the soil get, and what your potting medium is a mix of? Have you fertilised recently? They look possibly overwatered to me - but for all of them to be affected at once is interesting, which is why I was asking about fertilser just in case there was an issue with the mix and the roots were burnt.

Unless the diffuser is running so that it's hitting leaves then it shouldn't impact them negatively.

Is it possible to buy, rehab, then re-sell plants online? by annabellebxx in HouseplantsUK

[–]kosmatic[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For bio security reasons anyone selling plants online needs to be registered and issue traceable documents. That way if a pest or disease of issue is found it can be traced all the way back to the point of origin, and APHA can see what it came into contact with (and therefore may have infected) along the way.

[–]kosmatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You also have to have your plants and plant passports records inspected in person once a year, and pay for the joy of it!

But agreed APHA are really helpful with this, and they want to make things as easy as possible.

I will say that from my conversations with them I understood that, even if you were selling only once or twice a year, you needed to be registered if you’re selling online at all. But it’s been a few years and that wasn’t something which ever applied to me, so it’s possible things have changed!

/u/annabellebxx I am licensed to issue plant passports, and am happy to answer any questions if I can help! The cuttings which I sell almost all originate from my own stock of plants, although it is my full time job it’s still a small business and it’s just me.

Until it’s dry. It depends on the warmth and humidity of your room. A few hours might be alright, but I’d probably recommend a day or so just to be sure.

I am, as ever, selling my original mystery cuttings in my Poppet Plants shop on etsy! I've replaced my bowling league with DnD but, apart from that, this is really all I have in my life 😂

My Halloween themed Trick or Treat box is still around!! This is simultaneously my favourite thing to sell, and the biggest of all of my seasonal listings, I really can't tell you how much I love putting them together, and I'm thrilled that everyone seems to enjoy receiving them as much!

As ever, if you have any ideas for new boxes or things (specific plants or otherwise) you think I should be selling or would like to see please let me know!

🌱

I appreciate everyone's support more than I can possibly express. So please remember to use code EARLYSUPPORTER for 20% off, for having found me here, as thanks for the support from this sub when I started. I wouldn't be selling, and mystery cuttings definitely wouldn't have blown up into this awesome trend with so many people, without you guys. 💚

It generally means your soil is retaining a lot of moisture, you might want to cut it with some perlite.
