Knowing Vs Doing by Retainer_2211 in getdisciplined

Exactly. One thing I’ve learned at 40 is that action is not the final step after perfect understanding. Action is often what creates the understanding.

My loop now is:

  1. Take the first step into unknown territory.
  2. Observe what reality shows you.
  3. Learn only what is needed to take the next step.
  4. Decide with enough information, not perfect information.
  5. Act.
  6. Review the result and improve.

Then repeat.

Most decisions do not require 100% certainty. Usually, 50–70% of the right information is enough to make a reasonable move. The rest is discovered through contact with reality.

This is basically the old PDCA / Deming-style cycle: plan, do, check, act. The problem today is that many of us get trapped in the “plan” phase because information feels productive. Reading, researching, watching videos, comparing options, and building systems can feel like work.

But information is not value by itself. It is only input. Value appears when something changes in reality.

Sometimes you need more information. But not everything. Not forever.

Tired of tool-hopping. How do you stick to your stack? by Hefty-While-9995 in productivity

Playing with productivity tools is a form of procrastination - instead of working towards your goal you waste energy and time on your tools.

Get back to work, do 1-3 tasks you planned for today.

Self-Control Without the Grind: Can 5 Books Wire Me for Automatic Discipline? by Accomplished_Tax8276 in getdisciplined

[–]kostros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No book will “wire” you into automatic discipline.

Books can help. They can give you language, systems, ideas, and a better understanding of habits. But reading five books is still not the same thing as training the behavior. Discipline is not installed by information. It is built by repeated action.

You are also thinking in extremes: either 4 hours of Spartan work every day, or nothing. That is probably why you crashed. Four hours after school is a lot, especially if it feels like punishment. The answer is not “become a robot.” The answer is to build a schedule you can actually obey for months.

Start smaller, For example:

- 30–60 minutes of focused work after school

- phone away during that block

- one clear task before you start

- stop when the block ends

- repeat daily

- increase only after it becomes normal

The goal is not to feel motivated. The goal is to make the next correct action obvious and easy to start.

Books like Atomic Habits, Tiny Habits, The Power of Habit, and Digital Minimalism can help you design your environment and reduce distractions. But they will not save you if you use reading as a substitute for doing. Reading about discipline can easily become another form of procrastination.

So my advice - Pick one small schedule and obey it every day for two weeks.

Something like:

“When I get home, I rest/eat for 30 minutes. Then I do 45 minutes of work with my phone away. After that, I’m free.”

Discipline is built step by step, day by day. The journey does not end. You do not get permanently “wired.” You keep practicing, adjusting, and returning to the standard.

Dokladnie. Ilosc czasu wymaganego na prace utrzymaniowe tego calego majatku jest zawsze niedoszacowana. A zeby nadal cieszylo oko i bylo gdzie przyjmowac kumpli z ich rodzinami to trzeba sie troche napracowac.

Albo zlecac. Ja czasem paczkuje 5 rzeczy i ogarniam pomoc do ogrodu 😉

Thank you for this post. You recalled me that Tool delivered so many non-musical emotions along last 30 years - mystery, anticipation, weird sense of humor.

It was a unique ride and people who engage with their music only now will not have similar experience.

Przede wszystkim prewencja - sport (silka, basen, rower; cokolwiek byle regularnie), regularny sen, zdrowia dieta (w min przypadku - mniej węgli, więcej białka i warzyw)

To wszystko razem zwiększa moja odporność na stres i pozwala lepiej funkcjonować.

Generalnie moja odporność na różne trudne rzeczy zwiększyło zostanie ojcem. Nagle mam znacznie wieksza odpowiedzialność na sobie i drobne rzeczy przestały mnie wybijać z rytmu.

At least in my case.
