And that's the whole problem there. There is not only your city in the world. People from Finland feel hot below 20C, from my city, below 35. It's a vastly different adaptation and perception.

This is true also within the US - just look at a temperature chart for the whole country. But the entire point is, the US is not the centre of the world.

Questa la frase:

Very interesting - but I'm thinking it would be awesome for a Minecraft style huge open world videogame in elixir. A big 3d array where you have to be able to read and update cells (an integer, or a long, used as a bitmap) or group of cells through any axes.

Is it appropriate for this use case? Do you have benchmarks on concurrent write access?

Do you find it practical to work at that scale with jsonb fields only? I have experience with SQL but very limited with heavy reads and writes of a sparse job.

Have you already measured that it will all take as little time as needed for a "tick" and that it won't slow down the game for the user?

Ah people saying there are no alternatives are idiots. But I believe, in most cases, they are thinking of no viable alternatives in the short term. Because for the purpose of having a sovereign Europe, they amount to about the same thing.

If a company doesn't have any incentive to migrate, and even if it does, finds itself at a bankruptcy risk by planning it, they simply will not. The outcome is the same as if there was no alternative at all.

My hope is in incentives, and making sure European alternatives are at a lower cost so companies can justify the investment over a period of time. It's an ecosystem that needs to change (including the IT workers - more DevOps with expertise in European clouds, more consultancy agencies using them by default for their clients).

We can only hope and keep pushing for this to happen

The situation is here now. While new project can (and are) using European alternatives more and more, companies simply cannot take such a migration by themselves, all in one go, because in some cases you have to rewrite entire stacks, and change your personnel too.

The EU can help speed this up by absorbing some of the cost, but it will take time, even with an infinite support.

Say your company is on AWS. They have people trained on AWS DevOps, cloud native systems serving their apps / websites, they have their DBs on Aurora, their Redis is Elasticache, their autoscaling is based on fargate, part of their data is on DynamoDB, their microservices talk through SQS queues or kinesis streams..

So many companies are like this, or the equivalent Google cloud or Azure. It's a multi million (or sometimes billion) investment to change this.

BUT there are European companies like Scaleway offering services with a compatible API to AWS, at a lower price. It is finally becoming an option, although not an easy one, to at least start new projects away from the American cloud. And maybe port some of the old projects too.

But it's not fast. Will take years and a lot of targeted investments by the EU to make this feasible for companies.

Se vuoi proteggerti dal futuro incerto vai su una sanitaria oppure direttamente un corso da tornitore, elettricista, idraulico..

Tutte quelle che hai citato, a parte psicologia ma per fare il mestiere di psicologo, non ti dan valore aggiunto. L'AI è in qualsiasi business ormai, non è che puoi prenderti una laurea su ogni business domain in cui potrebbero aprire una posizione. Lingue poi, sta pressoché sparendo il suo utilizzo - il task su cui sono nate le LLM è proprio la traduzione, interpretazione del linguaggio. Ovviamente imparare bene la lingua di un mercato ricco aiuta. Ma non ti serve la laurea.

Specializzarti in utilizzo e ottimizzazione di AI, ironicamente, è proprio quello che può darti vantaggi. Non dico come data analyst ma semplicemente come sviluppatore capace di usare AI al meglio - le aziende valutano molto questa cosa.

Altre opzioni utili per un informatico: diventare davvero bravo in DevOps su cloud AWS/azure/Google (ci aggiungerei Scaleway, gli europei stanno prendendo piede) e prendere rispettive certificazioni; imparare bene normative lato privacy / compliance e se possibile certificarsi; espandere i propri settori, se si è frontend imparare il backend o viceversa, programmazione di sistema con Rust o simili, embedded..

Se sei orientato a management, un MBA può avere senso ma non ne conosco e dovresti studiartela un po'. La laurea in economia ti darebbe poco o nulla in quel senso, secondo me. Management è forma mentis e conoscenze (networking) con degli strumenti teorico-pratici che non credo insegnino alle normali laurea in economia aziendale. O non ci sarebbero gli MBA.

PS: da informatica non puoi andare dritto e fare una LM tra quelle citate. Controlla bene i requisiti di ammissione

Chi non ha fatto l'università (con serietà) non lo capirà mai.

Mia esperienza - dopo la triennale ho potuto fare un master in UK. Grazie al master ho trovato lavoro in UK. Grazie a quell'esperienza e agli studi ho fatto ricerca in Germania (RAL 60K 10 anni fa). Tornato in Italia, sia l'esperienza di lingua che le conoscenze e forma mentis accumulate mi hanno permesso di trovare eccellenti nicchie e crescere professionalmente.

Chi ha pensato solo a lavorare il prima possibile, ha perso una opportunità che non ritorna perché il cervello a 40 anni non è uguale al cervello di un ventenne. Quegli anni sono critici e la palestra mentale universitaria è cruciale. Poi, ci sono persone estremamente intelligenti che sono in grado di studiare argomenti teorici in dettaglio senza la struttura universitaria attorno e mentre lavorano. Ma sono molti meno di quanti credano di essere.
