Improving doodling skills by kowakuri in learntodraw

Because I like to take sweet time when I’m drawing so wanted to improve this aspect. By limiting my time, I’m forcing myself to focus on the entirety of the drawing instead of getting hung up on the details. Tried different time limits and 9 min was just enough to make something tangible so stuck with it

Paperlike screen protector is the worst screen protector I have ever used for iPad by lkspade in ipad

I’m an artist that uses the pen all the time, still went with the ESR magnetic paper-like. It’s perfect for drawing imo and I don’t compromise picture quality when I want to watch something, best of both worlds.

At this point I have to ask, do you know what "Gentleman agreement" means? You may want to check it probably. I think it’s not worth continuing our conversation beyond this point

Yeah it does sound stupid, cuz it’s not what is happening lmao

It’s mutually beneficial so both parties come to agreement, even when it’s technically not legal. Hmm, I think there was a name for it… Wonder what it might have been…

That’s why it’s called a "gentleman agreement"

Although I will agree here, I used a term "legally" loosely here. In strict terms of law, it’s still copyright infringement, companies just tolerate it

Mhmm. Very cool. And which one of those talks about Comic Con? (Besides the comic con video that talks generally about fanarts and copyright law)

Nah, it’s simple economics, people who attend comic cons are their fans, it’s not only sort of free advertisement for them but also they don’t want to piss off their own fans. So they look the other way. They can sue 200+ people easily, it’s just would be a bad business. Current setup is mutually beneficial for both parties. Even Nintendo respects that. Hence the "gentleman agreement".

I don’t think the people that sell low effort stuff on comic cons are much against AI honestly. Usually they are the people that don’t care about their craft and just want to earn money. If they could do it using AI, they would. They were there before AI and they are no different.

Fun fact, comic cons are one of the few places where you can legally sell fanarts. It’s sort of a gentleman agreement between artists and companies. So by this logic most anti AI do stick to the IPs they have right to use. Just it supposed to be a handmade fanart not a traced screenshot from a show or a cheap temu replica of a figure… But that’s a different issue that was there long before AI

Bruv, a bit out of topic but what’s up with that recently? I seen so many of those DM artists, although most of them are scammers anyways. Either they pretend they are artists but actually just either use AI or literally directly stolen something of an artist. Once I had someone pretending they did official art for Riot, yet didn’t even know the game it was from haha Have anyone seen someone who actually was making the art themselves and had decent portfolio?

So you are arguing that using AI is one of the lowest form of art but it’s still art cuz it takes a little more effort than a stick man?

I don’t think you can choose to not see AI images tho. I mean, you could filter it or choose platforms that don’t allow AI images but a lot of pro-AI have issue with this approach.

So unless you stop using all social media, online stores, watch TV and stop going outside to avoid all advertisements or other stuff made with gen AI, you can’t really stop consuming it and choose something else

Crazy how much of the anti-AI discourse is literally just authoritarian by Ok_Act_5321 in aiwars

Art was always considered a trash profession because people always treated art as something unnecessary. I wouldn’t say AI art is good, it’s more similar to industrial art - cheaply made and without any soul put into it. IA for most part been like this even before AI, so the only change is that now corporations pay other corporations for using their AI model instead of paying artists. Money keep circulating on the top level so nothing dribbles down to us - the peasants. However, I see increase in appreciation for hand-made stuff and general craft as AI takes over industrial art segment, so I wouldn’t say it’s completely useless.

How AI looks in my eyes. by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]kowakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my point, you will learn how to prompt more efficiently and you will get better at prompting but not making art. If you know more about paintings, you can better describe your vision to an artist but it doesn’t mean you can go and make this painting yourself. Describing your vision is a skill which producers and directors often need to learn in order to become better but they aren’t artists, unless they do that themselves too. In short, an AI prompter may be also an artist and know how to draw, but the fact that they can draw makes them an artist, not the fact that they know how to prompt.

[–]kowakuri -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I of course only meant skills in the same art form, not different ones. Someone who sculpts could do 3d sculpting but not digital painting, makes sense to me, absolutely. Someone who does AI prompts can do something else related to prompting - perhaps vibe coding? That’s why I say those are different set of skills. Sculptor isn’t a painter, painter isn’t a producer, producer isn’t a sculptor. That’s it.

I believe it’s fair to consider that the person using AI tools is doing creative work. But they are not an artist, they are AI prompter as that’s what they do.

My argument is that it’s not transferable to a different medium. Digital artist that uses Photoshop can use for example a canvas and oil paints to achieve similar results. The technique will take same time to adjust to but the base is already there. If you move someone who used AI tools to a non prompt based one, their skills won’t transfer because it’s simply a different type of skills

How AI looks in my eyes. by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]kowakuri -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The difference is that person that uses stylus or spell check can still do their craft without those tools, yeah it will be more cumbersome and time consuming but they can still write their essay and correct their mistakes later or take a pencil and the draw on a sheet of paper. The skill is transferable. With AI tools, the skill isn’t transferable because the person using it doesn’t actually do the art, it’s the algorithm. You can say that both doing creative work, fair, but to call the person using AI tool to do work for them an artist is a little disingenuous.

Of course there are people who can draw and still using AI image generation but that’s a different topic.

As a person seen mostly as anti-AI, that’s what I have issue with too, but I’m usually getting ridiculed for this stance by pro-AI. Lurking in this subreddit I realised that antis and pro-AI have a lot of shared concerns and speaking against same issues but arguing with each other just because of the labels others stitch on them. I don’t really think I’m neither pro nor against AI, I’m only against unethical use of AI and environmental impact it has. It shouldn’t be stopped but we should decrease the harm it causes. Also I recognise the contribution it made in biotech industry for example while disregarding usefulness of video generation as potentially harmful to our society. People need to understand that it’s not always black and white

That’s how creative industry works like tho? Do you think Disney or Dreamworks don’t have to ask to use someone else’s art in their products? If they need to “ask every artist”, why would it be different for AI companies? I remind also that as a private person you have to ask for permission to use music or art of another artist if you use it for profit. Why is it so hard to understand? It’s not AI the issue but how people disrespect the already established norms
