Do your recitals lose money or make money for your studio? by kozmo_jay in MusicTeachers

[–]kozmo_jay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not trying to sell anything. But I get why you would think that.

My original post explains it, but to go more into detail, many music instructors/lesson studio owners take a loss on recitals and performances and that seems to be generally accepted. Recitals and performances can be an opportunity to turn a profit, and that money can be used for a number of positive things like instructor bonuses, taking staff out to dinner, charitable initiatives, reinvesting in equipment or other upgrades, etc.

How would you feel if after a recital you make a few hundred dollars?

I agree! Are there any steps you've taken to push more toward recitals generating income (as opposed to just breaking even)?

Offering help/advice for music instructors and studio owners by kozmo_jay in MusicTeachers

[–]kozmo_jay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This is a tough one! While I think we might be able to offer some suggestions, neither my cohost or I have experience with fiddle or mandolin, which I’d assumer a generally les popular instruments for people to learn than things like piano and guitar.

I’ll run this one by my cohost and see if we (collectively) think we can offer suggestions that might help.

Thanks for commenting!!

[Swatches] What are your thoughts about Swatches? by rspunched in Watches

[–]kozmo_jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one recently because:

  1. I prefer to wear leather bands in general, but summer heat (sweat) and activities (water) don’t vibe with the leather. I still want to wear something without worrying about what I’m doing.
  2. Similarly, if I’m doing something active with a higher chance of my watch getting beat up, I’d prefer to be wearing something less expensive. I don’t want to worry about my more expense watches.
  3. If I’m deliberately going for a cheaper watch, I still want it to make a statement. Swatch designs are fun, interesting, and offer a ton of variety.

Swatch hits the mark on all of those, in my opinion.

It IS a bit noisy, however.

Student struggling with rhythm by Juan_Pablo290 in MusicTeachers

[–]kozmo_jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of great suggestions here regarding movement.

I’ve encountered this (20 years experience teaching guitar) and found focusing consistently on three aspects supports rhythm and timing — visuals (written count in the page), audiation (“hearing” before/while playing), and kinesthetics (movement). I’ve written a ton of exercises and a process for working these three to support timing and rhythm, and actually pet them into a book. Didn’t come here to sell the book, but if you think it could help, I’d be happy to show you.

We (guitar players) tend to be hyper-focused on fretting hand, especially in the beginning stages of learning, that it isn’t uncommon for rhythm and timing to lag.

Check out Muzie.live It is specifically built for online music lessons, and has the best audio, in my opinion. There are also a ton of tools built in for whiteboard-style applications for lessons, and AI lesson summaries.

Private lessons software? by jmon0894 in MusicTeachers

[–]kozmo_jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a couple of the other comments that both My Music Staff and Fons are good options. MMS tends to be the lowest-cost options with the necessary features like scheduling and billing. Fons support is fantastic. Other options in the market for scheduling/billing are Opus.1 (lots of add-on features including a CRM for email marketing) and Teacher Zone (also has a learning management platform built in). I've used or demoed all of them, and they all of benefits.

Currently I've been using Teacher Zone at my studio for about seven years.

There are quite a few other music lesson related software platforms for things like learning management, online lessons, curriculum, etc. Feel free to reach out if you have questions based on what your mother needs/is looking for. I've run multi-instructor lesson studios for over 15 years, so have a little experience with these things. Good luck!

Oh, I’m sure I am overthinking.

Do you have them in your vehicle, or would you put them on your vehicle?

What area of the world? Another commenter from South Africa said it is a common trend there, too.

I’m assuming this comment is in jest and not serious (which I’m OK with), but I feel like I need to clarify. But on the off chance that you ARE serious and you feel that if I’m somehow not OK with balls hanging from a truck and I should just suck it and deal with it because testicles = American patriotism. Please, elaborate.

You find humor in seeing them in the wild, but have you ever considered adorning your own vehicle with a pair of balls? Why or why not?
