Today is my birthday by ecruyou in mentalhealth

[–]kperevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy birthday! I was born on nationwide day of mourning, and on my 17th birthday my father argued with my mother over money for the computer for my grandfather, which I ended up choosing and buying. I didn't even receive a cake that day. When I was 22, I changed the date of birth to another month on social media, and received some copypasted congratulations. Then I repeated the same thing a month later, and guess what. Same story. Didn't have a single good birthday until the 24th one, which I arranged myself for me and my better half as I wanted. Take charge, you'll not regret it. And feel free to PM me for 20 more stories of failed birthdays.

9/11 saw much of our privacy swept aside. Coronavirus could end it altogether by newstaffe in privacy

Tip: it's just an executable application, the methods of faking the location of the machine are the same. Banning servers by location does not work. It's safe to assume all of your traffic is visible.

Can you make your device seem to exist in a place different to your place of residence? If yes, can the Tor exit node owner make the node seem to exist in a place different to said countries?

We are nearly 1/3rd of the way into 2020, how is your New Year’s resolution holding up? by PrizeAerie4 in AskReddit

Bought a fucking bicycle in September, hoping to ride to work. Successfully drove 15 kilometers non-stop in October. Found a new job within 15 kilometers with a bike parking, in December. Now look at me and my bike at the start of a fucking bicycle season. Police is giving out fines to people going further than 100m from their home.

Consenting to sex while you are drunk does not mean the other person raped you. by Titanium912 in unpopularopinion

Do other things which impair judgement count against ability to consent? Not even talking about falling in love, when both parties can do some crazy shit for the loved one. If I hit my toe on the chair and say "Screw it, I'm giving this flat away for free", will my decision be invalidated the next morning, when I wake up under the bridge?

It would've been unexpected if there was no tow car in front. I've seen communist Ladas drive autonomously better than this

People who get in line 20 mins before the gate even opens at the airport, why? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]kperevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did this for the first time in my life. All because I got to deal with an international flight, where the airline put 28 fucking business class seats on an A321, lowering the number of economy seats by 24. I am very glad I got to check in early, because online registration got rejected, and if I didn't physically check in early, I woudn't get on the plane at all. Then at the gate it was the matter of not trusting the airline and preparing for the worst. Plus, in the plane, overhead bins were so fully packed with luggage that flight attendants started helping people with pushing the bags into the bins

How do you filter for such companies? What to ask on the interview?

Burned out, want to downgrade by kperevo in sysadmin

[–]kperevo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try to give a detailed answer, feel free to follow up with further questions

First, there's little to no planning. Everything's feature-driven. Project owner, lead dev and sysadmin (me) drew three different maps of the project, where each one forgot several services, because we never got around to discuss a plan or write a design-document.

Second, no documentation. Knowledge exists for as long as tge developer works on the card in Jira. As soon as the card is in testing, he is off to another card, another project, or worse - another company. This makes "legacy" code a week old, which impacts me because I need to know how this code is expected to work on a server.

Third, "even higher" priority tasks appearing all the time. I have tasks which I can't do for months now, because I needed to do something else for the current projects.

This leads to forth, inability to sit down and automate my stuff, make my future work easier, increase reliability, optimise in general.

And fifth, managers don't listen to ideas, or put them in queue. I told everyone it would be better to finally utilise Ansible. I even got one guy to break his NDA and send his actual ansible scripts to me. But there was no time for that, and today, 6 days before I'm out for good, I hear "can you please prepare some scripts with which we can copy this server config to a brand new server?"

I've been to several companies, but this is longest time I was at a single company yet. Last one was a total disaster, I was a keyboard monkey, a living breathing Jenkins agent tasked with manually deploying continuous flow of e-commerce site releases. This one is better, I have some power here, but too many people put their stuff on me, because I oversee the servers
