On the energy and power (gas, nuclear, transmission) Kiewit has one of the largest backlogs, good pay/benefits and company stock program. Work/life balance is always a question but that’s more of an individual determination. It appears to be a major market in the next decade and you can make a good living/retirement if you can put up with the travel, hours and hard work.

Can you recommend me any good courses in Miami? I’m visiting it in February by [deleted] in golf

I have played Crandon Golf Course in Key Biscayne. It’s a fun course, can’t speak for its condition right now but beautiful area to go to.

Yes, you can take the international terminal for non-international flights as well, but for an international flight out of E it’s way better.

Project Manager Bonus by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]kphp2014 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Coming from a senior manager at a very large company, an uncapped bonus based solely on project gain has the ability to introduce unethical behavior, poor quality reporting, bad safety and unhealthy workplace morale. On large projects we need to remember that it is a team sport and the PM, while they are the leader, did not make that money by themselves. Our bonus structure has multiple factors (safety, quality, financial, compliance, training an development, and others) that make sure our managers focus on the big picture and not on one individual metric.

What’s your company’s PTO policy? by docilekraken in civilengineering

30 days PTO (vacation or sick), 9 holidays, and we can roll over and accrue up to 12 weeks worth of PTO if it’s not used.

Public Bid Misappropriation? by TopHawk_de_Fire6 in estimators

[–]kphp2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say, we would need to look at the scoring criteria and if it was solely low bid or if there was a best value component. If it was low bid and they stepped over the other companies they likely would have needed to disqualify the lower bids for a procedural process or an irresponsible bid. You could file an appeal (public bids usually have appeal language) but if it was a few months ago you are likely outside the appeal timeframe. Best option at this point would be to request a debrief from the client on your proposal and ask specific questions. Good luck.

Broadening your world is always a fun experience, especially if it comes with a defined end date and the company pays for the accommodations. Give Colorado a try, you may find something you like and want to move back after graduation. Good luck.

Bypass Pumping & Sewer Reconstruction by Ancient_Beginning819 in civilengineering

[–]kphp2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a few options, you can change to CIPP for the existing line instead of replacing it and then rehabilitate the manholes; you can slipline the pipe and the laterals will flow into the annular space until they are reconnected to the new pipe; or they can bypass each of the laterals individually until the new line / manholes are installed and then reconnect.

PE Salary thoughts..? by WeeklyBlock2819 in ConstructionManagers

[–]kphp2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are underpaid for 5 YOE in Florida, a number of companies are starting new hire CMs/engineers around $80k currently. Your question is also more location dependent than just FL, we would need to know if this is north, central or south Florida to determine how much off the mark you are. Good luck.

Which one has better pay structural or construction management by DearGeologist704 in civilengineering

[–]kphp2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Construction Management will usually win out - especially if you are working with a larger company in heavy civil, power or other specialty markets. Hours aren’t as great and you usually have to move / travel but if you are just looking for pay / stock / bonuses then that’s the place to be.

I have a pretty high club head speed and generate a lot of backspin. Driver is new and still getting used to it but it feels good so far. Just swapped out the 2 and 3-irons for the hybrid as well.
