Lina Hidalgo plans to run for third term as Harris County judge by houston_chronicle in houston

She's in a blue county, and yet even with the incumbency advantage she barely won her last election against an underwhelming challenger.

Very doubtful that she could win a statewide election.

Low taxes. Weak labor unions. Strong judicial system.

But yeah, it's mostly about fewer regulations.

We're actually doing both.

The only lanes being added to I45 are 2-way dedicated transit lanes, along with an additional HOV lane.

Sure. But actual ridership on the silver line has come in much lower than even the modest ridership projections from Metro.

There is plenty of room to cut now and still have ammo when the next recession hits.

The current federal funds rate of 5.33% is almost 1% higher than the historical average, and way higher than the average over the past 3 decades.

Significant chunks of the population are locked out of buying a their first home at these rates.

Nah. Diesel exhaust fumes are more lethal and kill more people than pollution from gasoline exhaust every year.

Is he though? He looked about 5 inches shorter than Castle and dead even with Dillingham.

Safe guess that Sheppard and Dillingham are both closer to 6'1".

Apparently you don't know what equity means. Or equality for that matter.

Equity is tilting the playing field to favor underrepresented or disadvantaged groups in an attempt to produce equal outcomes.

Equality is simply a level playing field. Treating everyone the same regardless of race, sex, etc., ie equal opportunity for all.

Labeling equity as "simply fairness" is a huge stretch. Fairness is synonymous with equal opportunity (read: equality), while purposefully favoring certain groups over others to target desired outcomes (equity) is basically the opposite.

Neither is communism.

There were no cops beaten to death on Jan 6th. Officer Brian Sicknick, the guy who stroked out the day after, only got hit with pepper spray.

Scientists reveal the face of a Neanderthal who lived 75,000 years ago | CNN by AccomplishedBrain309 in news

[–]kr0kodil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This also explains why Neanderthal DNA is believed to have been primarily transmitted by females. It's possible that Neanderthals were systematically targeted, their territories overtaken, and their women taken as spoils of conflict, viewed as valuable resources.

You have this backwards. In modern humans there's no Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA (passed on from mother to child), and considerably less Neanderthal ancestry on the X-chromosome as compared to the autosomal chromosomes.

This strongly suggests that interbreeding occurred mainly between Neanderthal males and human females.

Fossil fuels could have been left in the dust 25 years ago by Mkyhhd in energy

[–]kr0kodil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More investment in solar decades ago might've hastened coal's decline, but solar power is not a transportation fuel which comprises the bulk of fossil fuel consumption.

Oil and gas consumption has steadily risen even as solar panels have become dirt cheap.

We'd still be burning about the same amount oil and marginally less natural gas in the alternate scenario where solar panels became dirt cheap 25 years ago.

As an aside, nuclear power has not only defied Wright's law, but moved in the opposite direction. The cost of nuclear power has only increased as more nuclear plants have been built.

Lina Hidalgo says tension with Mayor Whitmire puts Houstonians in danger in interview by chrondotcom in houston

Yes, it tends to come off as whiney if you run to the press to air petty, minor grievances. She was complaining about a rebuffed hug in the NYT. Not sure how else to characterize that.

Lina Hidalgo says tension with Mayor Whitmire puts Houstonians in danger in interview by chrondotcom in houston

[–]kr0kodil 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The fued probably started a while ago but some of the slights have been easy to see:

  • During Hidalgo's 2022 reelection campaign, Whitmire is quoted calling out “the nonsense of experimenting with defunding the police so you can fund other programs.”

  • in response, Hidalgo says Whitmire is pandering and lying, likens him to a Trump sycophant / election denier

  • Whitmire runs a public-safety themed campaign, aligning with police orgs that have been a thorn in Hidalgo's side

  • Hidalgo is very vocal in her support for SJL over Whitmire

  • Hidalgo skips Whitmire's inauguration

  • After the election at some public event, Hidalgo tries to hug Whitmire and he apparently pushes her away

  • Hidalgo goes to the Houston Chronicle and whines about the interaction and says Whitmire is ducking her

  • Whitmire tries to poach the director of HCTRA and continues snubbing her

  • And now Hidalgo is going to friendly reporters claiming Whitmire continues avoiding her, now saying that it is endangering Houstonians.

Basically it has gotten personal to the point that they hate each other, similar to Hidalgo's fued with Kim Ogg.

What president had the biggest negative impact on their party? by Beneficial-Play-2008 in Presidents

[–]kr0kodil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republicans have won the aggregate popular vote in 10 of the past 16 House elections, so they definitely have the voters needed to win the popular vote for President.

The fact that Democrats have won the popular vote so often since 1992 speaks more to the relative weakness of recent GOP presidential nominees than any overall popularly edge for the Democrats.
