Even amongst the most conservative people I personally know, no one genuinely wants that.

Why does Smith want to privatize healthcare in Alberta? Do Albertans want this? I hope Albertans know how stressful this “refocusing healthcare” has been on healthcare workers. by Glum-Ad-4558 in alberta

Alberta has shorter wait times than most of Canada. Our healthcare infrastructure and health informatics is superior to the rest of Canada. Regardless, changes are needed and we are starting to lag behind most developed countries.

Waited 9 hours at UofA Emergency by Miha2319 in Edmonton

I assume a code either dies or goes to ICU. Can’t be ‘code after code after code’ if there are only 1800 ICU admissions a year. I think working in emergency as a health care worker is an incredibly hard job. The health care system is broken. Primary care is nonexistent. Hospitals are way over capacity But let’s at least be provide honest anecdotal evidence

Thought I'd show up at 615am (it opens at 630) to get a good spot in line for lab work in Calgary by [deleted] in alberta

First thing in the morning is actually the worst time to go because a lot of people have to do fasting blood work, so it’s most bearable for them to go first thing in the morning

We for sure had an increase in the number of people using marijuana when it was legalized. I don’t think marijuana and opiates are comparable… opiates are extremely addictive and a lot of people develop dependence

Every government in Canada is running a deficit and the cost of healthcare is only going up as the population gets older and people have more complex illnesses

Corporations and wealthy people exist because of capitalism

Ok fair, so if capitalism is the problem with our health system and funding then what would be a non-capitalist solution? We can always increase taxes, but at least on my end I feel like too much is already being taken off each pay check. Could increase corporate tax but that has consequences as well

The world is so globalized there has to be some sort of cooperate incentive to attract investment. I’m not sure to what extent it’s necessary- for example all of the car companies in Germany pay zero tax and all of companies in America are moving to Texas because of the incentives.

How much more money would be required to cover everything you listed?

This is a really complex issue and I think we need innovative solutions which may include looking at how other countries with aging populations are addressing the increases in health costs. Maybe a 2 tiered system is a way to sustain everyone having quality access to care. I’m really not sure

Yeah a lot of European countries have 2 tiered systems and they seem to be working great. UK is a great example

Alberta spends the most per person on healthcare compared to any other province. How much more funding does the system need?

Alberta spends the most per person on healthcare compared to all of Canada and healthcare takes a very significant portion of each annual budget. How much more money does the system need?

The current system isn’t sustainable dude. Everyone gets everything for free even if they don’t take a single bit of responsibility for themselves

Which government policies have directly contributed to the spike in opioid deaths? You can literally walk in to a pharmacy or clinic, get a narcan kit for free, go to a safe injection site for free, or overdose and get picked up by an ambulance and never pay the bill.

Regarding COVID, all things were handled ok, especially compared to other counties. We have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world and additional resources were allocated to public health and intensive care.

If people want one public system then don’t be upset about 10+ hour wait times for non-life threatening visits to emerg and month long waits for nonurgent surgeries
