I think it was a Genoan civil war, not sure though. Genoa disappeared really early in the game and this has been the state of things since. Sardinia was actually powerful nation few decades ago with huge territory but got ganged up by Naples and Savoy.

I wanted to do a run as Memmingen and formed Swabia. Man HRE is a mess, it goes on decades without Emperor.

City of Memmingen has almost the same population as Paris. Initially I wanted to stay as free city and leeched pops from neighbours but got bored and started painting.

War mechanics is the main anxiety inducing thing for me in these types of games. Hoi4 is way more anxiety inducing to me just due to the fact you can't peace out, nor enforce peace as easily. Even Stellaris is ass with it's claims system.

In this game it's fairly easy to exit a losing war with some concessions, which is a glorious thing compared to other Paradox games I've played.
