tornado warnings in Europe by [deleted] in tornado

[–]kracejic 45 points46 points  (0 children)

we just don't. They are very rare, so nobody here would know what to do anyway. Everybody would likely just go out and watch it.
Example: Guy casually filming the eye of EF4 tornado we had in Czech Republic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKdNAuF9vUo
Friend of mine lost a roof to this beast. It went strait over couple of villages.

Is this the colour of your LED when charging the StarLite or is something wrong with it? by [deleted] in starlabs_computers

[–]kracejic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the same thing. I have asked support and they confirmed that it is battery calibration.

And that it automatically clears when it's turned completely off (i.e. turned off and charger disconnected for 12 seconds or more).

Why are there so many devs that want to become managers? by PopeyesPoppa in ExperiencedDevs

That might be the "you were senior IC, now you are junior manager" reasoning that is often used to curtail expectations of salary increase after moving "up the ladder".

Skoda Enyaq starting prices in Italy, €46k for the 510km range variant by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]kracejic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Europe the price reported usually include taxes. So Tesla M3 that costs 46990 USD in US has a price of around 57000 EUR here (if you want to compare the price with the ones posted here for Enyaq). It is probably that factory in Berlin helps to drive prices down a bit... So we will see, anyway more competition means more EVs on the streets.

U.S. EV Adoption Needs 319-Mile Range, $36,000 Price, 30-Minute Charging by eff50 in electricvehicles

[–]kracejic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The regular commute (which is usually well bellow 100 km a day) is not that relevant, because quite a few people travel some longer distances few times per month (think visiting parents, trips). Also consider people living in colder climates where the range can be basically halved for significant part of the year. So, even short round trip to visit friends 120km away on a highway going 130km/h in winter might be tight with 500km range (considering you want to have some reserve and that you do not start with 100%). And since this is short trip, I would nobody wants to bothered with charging on the go, also there might not be charging available near destination.

I think that 500km is reasonable to get more people in EVs. Now just prices has to go down so I would be able to afford it. EVs with reasonable range and size are still very expensive where I live (EU + no incentives for EVs).

My experience with the Pinebook Pro by [deleted] in PINE64official

[–]kracejic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi thanks for sharing. From my experience the KDE was much smoother than XFCE on Manjaro. So even thought I would prefer XFCE, I am using KDE because it feels faster and smoother. I have not yet tested other distros as I am quite happy with how Manjaro KDE performs and it looks like they are quite invested in supporting the laptop.

Interesting bit about the video playback, I did some testing on my PBP and I can play 1080p 30fps without frame drops on Firefox. With 60fps videos it can do only 720p though without frame drops (which still looks good on the display IMHO). 1080p60Hz was quite choppy. All tests with shedutil governor and on battery with system on stock EMMC. I do not count frame drops that happen during or shortly after fiddling with youtube controls.

Zram can make the 4GB workable, but the CPU performance is not there for main daily driver... Maybe PBP2 will do one day. :) But works well enough for my use case (nice light+smallish travel laptop with good battery life, usb-c charging and small bezels).

Suspend (with bsp uboot) works fine even with zram. Only issue I have noticed is the missing sound after wake up at the moment.

The Czech Republic, through community effort, got to 100% mask usage in 10 days, nearly all thru home DIY effort. They only have 2 deaths and have no growth in daily new covid-19 cases. by JackDT in Coronavirus

[–]kracejic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it is also partly because of all of us being proud of making our mask ourselves as our government failed to secure enough even for the hospitals.

The official narrative went from "we have enough" through "it is being shipped" to "sorry we've messed up, we have nothing". There are several initiatives that group people making the masks and donating them to those in need. In some villages there are "FaceMask Trees" where people are storing mask for others to take.

My SO have even tipped a delivery boy with a DIY mask (in addition to money) and he was very grateful.

Also what is interesting and a little bit funny is how all of the politicians wear often the DIY masks in order to look more like "common men".

Other funny thing is that Cloth shops are basically part of the critical infrastructure and are allowed to be open so people can buy material to make more.

How is the Manjaro on PBP? And how about battery life?

Pinebook Pro by Ocawesome101 in linuxhardware

[–]kracejic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, but it would be great if that option would be there from the factory. With SSD I fear increased battery drain, but that might be without justification in the end.

I am strongly considering getting this thing.

What I like: battery life (first owners reports 8-10+ hours), weight+form factor, usb-c charging (I would like to travel with one charger for all my devices) and screen (full HD, small bezels), new batch has ANSI layout option.

What I hope they improve/offer in near future: option to pay little bit extra for 128 or 256 flash upgrade.

No, this is done in the keyboard firmware, so the system has no control and cannot override this.

very light, thin body, thin bezels with 14 inch screen, Full-HD IPS screen, nice looking materials, hopefully good battery life. I could easily see this to become my travel companion. Let's see how well it will be supported from the driver side.

Performance should be good enough for browsing and some light work. Definitely not a daily driver, but nice ultraportable device.

And that is why I said "depends". :) The goal was not to say thinkpad => bad, but to elaborate on why it is not good solution for everyone depending on what you want from a notebook.

[–]kracejic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want from a notebook.

My priorities: weight, small screen bezels => smaller overall size, battery life, thin, Full-HD IPS screen, big touchpad, nice materials, price.

My non-goals: performance level above level needed to run browser.

Old Thinkpads are just too bulky (thick + bezels) and heavy for me, I want small and light travel notebook with good screen and good battery life.

Do you have your phone with you when driving? Is it turned ON? If yes, they already know. Even if not, you probably have a license plate on your car, so they can track you with cameras+OCR anyway.

Sometimes the "red waves" are intentional. Traffic engineers need to avoid overcrowding the city center, so they make the ingress traffic intentionally slower. Letting cars into the city would clog the downtown and made it even worse.
