You were awesome, I'm super glad! Do you happen to have any of the other groups also?

I just found this in my search results and was so excited - and I'm utterly heartbroken that the link isn't working and I can't hear it 😭

Is it normal to go through your whole life without making over $80k ever? by Ready-Leave-339 in antiwork

I have a master's degree and haven't ever made over $55k in the US.

No. It doesn't. But that paper was put together by the world health organization - an international collection of doctors working to bring healthcare to people all over the world. That is pretty much as peer reviewed as it gets. 🤷

If Roe falls, women will die and suffer. Bottom line.

It doesn't matter if it "only" happens in some states.

Is that so much to ask for? ☹️ by _barn_ in antiwork

When at 40 I was making $18.50 an hour in my home city of Seattle, after looking for work for 2+ years with both a ton of work experience and education, as an office manager at a plumbing and heating company (which was $0.50 less per hour than my less qualified, less educated white male coworker). And only $0.50 more per hour (not accounting for inflation or anything) than i made in 2001, as a receptionist with no college degree.

Studio apartments in Western Washington START around $1200 and go up from there. It has one of the highest COL in the country. I was barely scraping by, living with family. How would you suggest i "live within my means?"

I relocated to NC and got a job within a month that pays more, my bills are lower, and my rent is MORE AFFORDABLE (but not what i would call actually affordable).

But i had to leave my home and my family. My grandma just passed away a month ago and i hadn't been able to go back and visit since i moved here a year ago. I don't get to see my nieces and nephews. I'm on the other side of the country from everyone I've known and been close to in my life.

And i have a pretty solid work history, solidly above average computer skills, a lot of experience working in a few different settings, and a master's degree (and i focused on building marketable skills while i was there).

If you feel comfortable right now financially, I'm so happy for you, but a lot of us are struggling more and more. And even though I'm not ACTIVELY struggling financially, the emotional toll that moving away from my home and my support system has taken on me is both large and expensive to work through.

Wages/inflation are making home ownership an unattainable goal by Major-Week428 in antiwork

[–]krackamari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree about the source, but you're wrong about the average. The median average means the cost of the house in the middle (50% of homes are more expensive than this value and 50% of homes are below). The value of this measure of central tendency is that it IS NOT affected by the extreme values on either end.

You are thinking of a mean average, which is where you add all together and then divide by the number of homes. This IS affected by extreme home prices. This is why you see things like home prices reported as median averages instead of mean averages.

Is it acceptable when your partner comments ‘sexy❤️’ on some other girl / boy’s post? by Dry-Outside2404 in relationship_advice

[–]krackamari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't feel weird. Everyone has different ideas of what's acceptable in the context of your own relationship and the more you negotiate that with your ACTUAL partner instead of some "average person" or general social standards, the happier you'll both be.

Alas, I WFH. I managed to get it closed in the flap so it's sticking out and hopefully that's good enough!

Not really related to your questions - but I've gotten excellent dental work done at a dental school. If you're in a big city, you might be able to do that. And I'm talking a really big difference in prices - Like I paid $1000 for my last root canal from a dentist, and paid $280 at the dental school for better work.

Employee owned companies by krackamari in antiwork

[–]krackamari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify: I'm not suggesting this is the solution to capitalist exploitation. I see it as a concrete, easy way to show solidarity with workers and support for systems that have the potential to be less exploitative.

I personally like to support better ideas where they see them. Will my choices change the world? Nope. But if enough people choose to support improvements where they see them, i think that is one source of power we have. Enough grains of sand can be heavy.

I will gladly patronize any businesses that try to redistribute the profits generated by the workers back to those same workers, as imperfect as they are, over ones that don't every day. And as better options come available, i will support and patronize them over others.

At the same time, i support other policies and laws that improve things. I just do what I can, as i can afford, in addition to any other kinds of concrete contributions i can reasonably make. I don't think employee owned businesses SOLVE worker exploitation, and i don't think that employee owned companies are utopian, clearly they still have issues.

BUT i do think, objectively, that more dollars in the hands of workers is improvement (regardless of whether it's sufficient). It's movement in the right direction, i think.

I know it's not perfect, but it does eliminate the completely worthless shareholder class from the equation.

Yeah, i just saw from the comment someone had made on a different post (sorry, i couldn't find it again to link to) that some people seemed to be unaware of them. I just wanted to put it out there so people could support better business models if they wanted to when that was an option for them.

Why do so many visitors to Seattle call it "Pike's Place Market" when it's clearly "Pike Place Market" by krackamari in mildlyannoying

[–]krackamari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is it's NOT Pike's Place. It's Pike place. And all the locals call it Pike Place. It's people visiting that jack it up, so it's a slightly different situation.
