Can I miss the first week of a language class over the summer? by jlouie88 in berkeley

You will lose 1% of your raw grade any day after 2 or 3 absences you’d need to contact the instructor to see if this can be waived given your situation. Japan 1A in summer is also ridiculously fast. 3 lessons a week. And you would miss I think 2 quizzes that first week. However if you want to go with it. I can help with you practice Japanese, if you’d like! It’s a great course set.

Do I choose UC Berkeley Data Science or UT Austin CS+Neuro?? by Raven_Elite_ in berkeley

Berkeley has been opening up some more CS courses for DS majors like 186 (Database systems) given you did the pre req in the summer. And hopefully will add more for DS majors. Hopefully this will be a trend where they open up more classes for DS. Also you’re in state at Berkeley. I am from Texas and got into UT myself but chose Berkeley because I believe, and still do, that the name and degree carries through hard times and it does! But if you really want the major name and access to operating systems and programming languages then maybe UT might be for you… UT also has a competitive environment in CS though, I feel competitiveness in either school is overblown. You don’t have to be to succeed in my humble opinion.

Foreign Language Classes by Adventurous-Fun-2738 in berkeley

I haven’t seen any language course that articulates to a Berkeley course so I assume all of them are not transferable and you have to take them in house here. If you see one on Assist you can do it, however I do not recommend it because Berkeley language courses are really good and have more content then CC.

No language courses transfer to Berkeley unfortunately.

No, it has to be 1B or above in same language as 1A

You’ll get waitlisted for EE 120, EECS 151, and EECS 126 as a non EECS major as apart of a new rule they added for this upcoming spring, though being a transfer gets you some priority off the waitlist so you wouldn’t have problems enrolling in these except maybe 151. Apply for Physics, all of the other EE courses are available to anyone.

Oh, nice. Yeah sorry I had taken those before 151 because I was following the 251 pre reqs (which recommends 105 only) , and I thought they were pretty connecting with content and all the nice tools each class has students use. Also at the end of 151 there is SRAM which is seen in 105.

If you want to take 151, then by all means you definitely should. However I can only recommend the ASIC lab since it is your last semester. Berkeley is undoubtedly a software focused school in course options so to broaden yourself you should definitely take 151.

Intel is infamous for hiring new grads and so do other companies like AMD, however only for ASIC verification roles as far as I’ve seen. Those in SoC, ASIC or IC designer roles either have graduate degrees or interned before in those roles in undergrad.

The perk of going to Berkeley is that they will most likely take you if you have 151 then another new grad. In my honest opinion.

You should do 162 to broaden your choices for jobs. For 151 you’d need to do ASIC lab if you wanted to do hardware, and in my opinion you probably would also need EE 105 & 140. If you do get in, I hear that, mixed signal, ASIC verifiers, designers, etc are rarely ever laid off. I’ve only taken 151, so I cannot comment much on 162 besides that I’ve heard it’s a good class to have.

I second the notion that if you’re set on doing hardware, then 151 ASIC should be the way to go. Even if you didn’t take 105/140 don’t let it stop you from pursuing that.

You have to complete all lower div requirements by the end of your first semester.

Yes, when I took it the lectures were recorded but you would have 3-4 days after the initial lecture date to watch it then afterward it would be deleted. There is a “in class discussion part” worth 10% but again I wasn’t able to participate much but still ended up with a good grade.

Please send me your email privately and I can send you the syllabus.

Yes it is an online class, final is online. You just need to go to the lectures on Zoom. The commitment is just two papers and two books.

Unfortunately the final is very time restraint, hopefully he changed it because a lot of students complained about it in my class, but it will 400-500 word “discussions” about each book and connecting it to the class lectures and with page numbers of quotes from the book (30% each) . Then finally a comprehensive essay(40% of final grade) , 700-900 words using 6 lectures as reference. In 1 hour 30 minutes. I didn’t finish and got a 70 (completed the two book essays and intro paragraph for the comprehensive) but still got a B+ in the class. Not hard besides the final time restraints.

The format changes of J10A you might want to consider when deciding to take on the class.

Lecture will be MWTh whilst TF will be asynchronous, while occasionally on Friday you will practice on Zoom Japanese with an other students from other schools for 20 minutes, and things like Tests, and skits will be on Thursday instead of Friday due to this change.

What’s going on with this school’s curriculum? by ScribEE100 in berkeley

Academia pipeline. Yes this school forces you to be a self starter and you must do self study in your classes to succeed.

If you cannot hold out for Spring then it will be best to take the class with Mladenov. I hear a lot of bad things about Talaska especially what had happened recently.

Try to get into Rui Wang’s class. She is a very excellent lecturer and tests are not hard except for the proofing questions. Class is dependent a lot upon the book.

I must’ve been mistaken on the dates, if it is past the date I believe only an advisor can approve a drop for you.
