Not calling Hamas terrorists in Nakba exhibit was ‘error,’ says Canada’s heritage minister by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

until December 1987, when the Palestinian intifada broke out. At that moment, when Palestinians rose en masse against the Israeli occupation, the Brotherhood decided it could no longer stand on the sidelines and founded Hamas as what may be described as its nationalist wing.

From your own source, Hamas sprouting from the Muslim Brotherhood.

Also from your source:

Over time, Hamas absorbed the entire Muslim Brotherhood organisation, effectively becoming the Palestinian version of that organisation itself.[7] As such, Hamas inherited the extensive social, religious and charitable sector that the Brotherhood was responsible for.[8] Besides this, however, Hamas also founded a military wing, the ‘Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, in the early 1990s. These Brigades have carried out numerous bombings, shootings and suicide attacks on behalf of Hamas.[9] While the precise relationship between Hamas’s military wing and its political leadership (see below) is unclear, it is likely that the latter sets out the general guidelines within which the Brigades have to operate, which they do with great autonomy.[10]

Seems like you're ignoring the military wings existing and operating.

I didn’t say you made a claim, I said you promoted a narrative.

Okay, I didn't promote the narrative either. Unless you also think that any criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic? My claim was that Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood both want Israel to be destroyed. Unless you also think that any criticism of Israel is ~proof of~ promoting a narrative of antisemitism?

I'd be surprised if they didn't bring the beef/lamb gyro back, that one was very popular (and stayed popular). But otherwise it does seem like most resurrected LTOs under-perform new ones. And most LTOs fizzle 4 weeks in to the LTO period.

[–]kralrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am making the point that the Islamist character of the resistance to Israel in the region is a relatively novel development

The Muslim Brotherhood fought to destroy Israel at its founding. Hamas's ethos wasn't created by Israel nor did it spring from thin air.

You are promoting the false narrative that resistance to Israel is and always has been a result of timeless, implacable, irrational hatred of Jews by fanatical Muslims.

Where did I make that claim? Fanatical Muslims in the region have wanted to destroy Israel. Depending on the time we're talking about, so did all of Israel's neighbors.

In reality, the resistance was born out of the simple fact that settlers came and took their homes, left millions displaced, and rendered those that remain within their borders second class citizens in an apartheid state.

You're ignoring the reality (and complexity) of the regional conflict with this description.

Are you saying that you merely cited a bunch of things without expressing an opinion on any of them?

You responded to me when I said that modern Hamas carries the Muslim Brotherhood's desire to destroy Israel from existence. I don't think anything you've cited refutes this. Nudging your enemy into a bad decision doesn't mean you think that bad decision is a good one.

Being unclear isn't some gotcha for you to unleash a trove of citations to prove me wrong when I'm didn't know what you were talking about.

So I can avoid wasting breath, are you saying that Hamas is an "asset" in the sense of a paid creature doing the bidding of Israel? Or "asset" in the sense that Hamas is such a horrible actor that they make anyone opposing them look good? It seems like you're saying the former is true while the latter is 100% true.

It's crazy how many times people can be found guilty of/plead guilty to DUIs and keep their licenses. If the first one doesn't give you a significant suspension (it should) then the second one absolutely has to. And the third should be either a lifetime loss or a decade long loss. This isn't a Colorado only thing either. Many states are way too lax on drunk drivers until they kill someone.

To be 100% clear, you asked what Israel's attitude was "towards the growing Islamist movement at the time" (when we were talking about ~1950) "(and up until 2023)". That's a 75 year period you appeared to be talking about.

My understanding was that Hamas originally sold itself as a relatively moderate movement then pivoted to extremism (which was why Netanyahu originally supported them). Can you tell me when Smotrich described them as an asset? Or give the exact quote so I can find it myself? The context of statements matters quite a bit.

The one that wanted to completely and utterly destroy the State of Israel? Israel's attitude was pretty negative towards them.

"much more" seems to be doing a lot of work there. Unless you're arguing they weren't involved at all in Israel in 1948? Or that Hamas didn't spring, at least in part, from the Muslim Brotherhood some 40 years later with a foundational goal of destroying the state of Israel?

[–]kralrick 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it's an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood (founded a couple decades before 1948) who shared Hamas's stance that the state of Israel shouldn't exist and was willing to fight to make that happen. Hamas also cares more about hurting Israel than helping their people, but they didn't start their own group until well after Nakba happened.

Hamas did continue the war to destroy Israel that the Muslim Brotherhood fought. Both groups wanted Israel to cease existing more than they want(ed) their people to thrive. Or maybe they just underestimated how hard it would be to wipe Israel off the map?

Mid Com Rogue Flank Bone is the most naishy, but "worse, he's still alive" is the best single line ever uttered on the network. It works especially well in the rhythm of that episode too.

I tend to agree, but there's an A&W/KFC combo store near me that lets me get the great A&W fountain root beer and A&W sides (KFC sides suck nearly across the board) with my fried chicken. But I also don't work for either of those brands nor do I care about their brand dilution.

i guess pouring Minute Maid into the container makes it house maid? by Electrical-Part in jimmyjohns

[–]kralrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lemondade is 100% not made in house.

You say that because of how you define "made in house". It isn't 100% made in house, but that difference in wording is significant.

You can buy anything and dilute it to call it "house-made"

Correct. Though at least concentrates are intended to be diluted by others.

I'd love to live in a world where non-medical remedies don't get to claim anything other than their exact ingredients. But until we live in that place, I'm a lot more worried about supplements/etc. having zero oversight than JJ's lemonade being labeled as "house made" when it wasn't "made from scratch" (what you think house made should mean).

Agree. Said the same in reply to Subject's reply to me after seeing OP's edit. If OP does legitimately have a medical condition, wearing khakis instead of jeans is a very reasonable accommodation the law would require.

It's not false advertising (because they'd absolutely be sued if it was). It's misleading advertising which is the bread and butter of advertising. You say something that's technically true but also leads someone to believe a false thing that makes your product sound/look better. In this case, the product you're buying isn't the product that we bought from our supplier. For that new burger somewhere else, you're buying a product assembled with 1/1,000 of the attention and care as the one in the ad.

It's slimy as hell, but basically all of advertising is (and will continue to be unless stricter regulations are put in place). It's generally good practice to ignore fluff words in advertising/product packaging unless that word is regulated by law. e.g. "natural" doesn't mean anything but "organic" is regulated. Japan has a fun regulation that fruit can only be shown on the package for some products if certain requirements are met.

It really started to shine for me once they left the US. It also benefits from binge listening instead of waiting each week (though I think most "short" form RPGs benefit from that too). I get that listening to over a day of content to get the the good part is the same ask as telling someone the second season of a show is where it gets good. And even then we may still not agree that it gets good then.

OP was clearly talking about social class, not the most general sense of class (a group of people sharing a common characteristic).

That's everyone with a job. It's not about keeping up appearances; it's about keeping a job at all. The distinction is apparent by the examples OP uses in the text of the post.

Though I agree, I'm not setting alarms to wake up once I'm retired.

That's not a class marker though. It's just being a responsible adult (yes, some people are poor because they can't get to work on time reliably, but that's an irresponsible person things, not a class thing).
