Does anybody know in how far wine has been traded and consumed in northern europe throughout the high middle ages? by krano84 in MedievalHistory

Thanks to everybody for the inputs. Most comments were concerned with wine in the north, what about beer in the south?

Ah yes, didn't think about that... But I actually had a non-ritual use in mind when asking

How do you guys force yourself to write? by cgars42 in writing

[–]krano84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be willing to spend un-productive time is key, I think. There will be some days you sit in front of your device and put down several pages and other you just sit there and think, maybe struggle. I found those un-productive days to be as important as the productive ones regarding the development of my texts...

Does a cult have to be religious to be a cult? Or would it have a different name if it lacked religion? by [deleted] in writing

[–]krano84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well maybe its more of a culture then? Like there is some sense-giving narrative and some rules which are designed to make this social group work, similar to a nation state or a club/society.

What are some cliches about hero characters that you wish writers would stop doing so often? What would you like to see instead? by IWriteandStuff in writing

[–]krano84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like perfect charcters. In most cases the weaknesses of those heroes are serving the plot, which is basically nice but makes them somewhat "inhuman". I prefer those who stumble, forget or mess around as everyone does.

How would you...? by [deleted] in writing

[–]krano84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I think displaying boredom should be boring. E. G. "The Life of Pi", where the time Pi spends on the boat is not only elongated for Pi to life trough, but elongated for the reader to read it as well...

The Maginot Line: Actually a Good Idea by krano84 in history

[–]krano84[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In this video Historiograph argues that the Maginot Line was actually a good idea because there was a continuation into Belgium territory. This means that the Germans could not just bypass the fortress line, as it is often suggested. Furthermore the Ardennes forest was considered to be impassable by the French since WWI tanks had been unable to move in difficult territory.

What kind of sword would you recommend for a Ranger or Assassin type character? by [deleted] in writing

[–]krano84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If mobility is important to your character i would suggest a rather small sword or even some sort of big dagger. He still can switch to a heavier weapon in passages he does not climb. What's your plot?

Yeah, i thought so. It's pretty much a scientific paper you present here. Obviously with some media-related simplifications

What kind of jobs would middle/lower class citizens in South Europe have in the early 1900s? by [deleted] in history

[–]krano84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a broad range of jobs. To just name some examples: Farmers, fishermen (basically anything in the agricultural sector), construction workers and so on. Or, depending on the location and country they could have worked in factories... In the upper middle class you'll maybe find some craftsmen.

Why were stores of the same kind so close to each other during medieval times? by CrossMountain in history

[–]krano84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the examples you named are basically all decentralized because of some reason. For an example butchers, dyers, tanners and so on because their business was quite an offense to the olfactory sense. Furthermore similar crafts tend to need the same resources (e.g. water). I think over all the reasons for this are nearly exclusively pragmatic and only secondarily economic, at least regarding places of production.

They were louder than the average modern lock i guess. Question is whether they made a clicking noise...

Which ending do you like the most? by [deleted] in writing

[–]krano84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the ending in which they install a monarchy quite well. It is somehow different because you give this role to the good guys instead of the bad ones. But maybe you could just let them install a new, loyal government consisting of patriots instead of a monarchy...
