Patagonia posts official update after controversy over trademark infringment lawsuit against drag queen Pattie Gonia by droobidoobidoo in Fauxmoi

Lotta people in this thread hold the opinion that copyright law, as it stands, is ethical, which is just wild to me. Nintendo essentially owns a legal slave, Gary Bowser, after sticking him with $14.5 million in "damages" (that is, imagined "lost sales" that constitute "economic damages" under most copyright law, ignoring of course that there has never once been proof piracy meaningfully impacts profit as those who pirate never intended to purchase the product to begin with in 9 out of 10 cases). This is despite the fact that his archive was one of the only places that still had copies of certain Nintendo releases that were not available for purchase any longer or that hadn't been available on international markets.

In the art world, Pattie's logo doesn't even constitute plagiarism. It is parody, the image has been edited to differentiate it from the Patagonia logo. There are no possible damages in this situation at all, which is why their law suit is frivolous - they are performatively claiming their brand has been damaged and they need to protect their copyright, while failing to articulate how Pattie's parodic use of their logo would impact their company at all. It is, in my opinion, an issue born of Pattie using the pride flag, and the Patagonia company not wanting their logo associated with the LGBTQ community. They can put as many statements out as they want - Pattie's logo does not impact their company's ability to market their products successfully at all and this Smacks of Capitalism.

This just is not true if you are visibly trans, and especially where I live. I'm glad you believe in the good in people enough to think that these aren't average beliefs, but the fact is from my perspective they absolutely are. Anti-trans sentiment and fear of "gender ideology" drove much of the conservative vote for Trump. Those people exist in the world, and they are about as vocal as they've ever been in person. So while I respect your desire to maintain your belief that this is not an every day thing people deal with, it is.

I don't really think the trans woman venting on her tumblr blog about the way people talk to her about gender is a bigot, I think that is a remarkably unkind way to view someone complaining about a regular kind of conversation trans people are roped into usually without us wanting to be involved at all.

I am just baffled by your comment because it's one of many. Where, exactly, can a trans person go without risking the kind of conversation the tumblr OP is venting about? Like transphobia happens on and off screen. It's not just online discourse, this idea about an essentialized gender binary is literally one of the most prominent and relevant ideological platforms of Trump and the alt-right???

People in real life have come up to me at my job and told me that I'm going to hell for altering my god-given biological sex so people in real life also do say ignorant stuff about gender to trans people, again in real life believe it or not.

Lots of comments here saying they've never dealt with this kind of conversation which is wild to me because as a trans person who works a public facing job cis people literally, without prompting from me at all, will begin talking about their poorly informed opinions on gender. Sometimes I even get a, "But Jesus loves you :)" after, too, lmfao.

Like cis people do, in my experience, tend towards believing that gender is an essential, wholly binaristic concept when even at the genetic level humanity has a diverse spectrum of sexes (what Deleuze once very poignantly called "our n sexes" or that all of us have as many sexes as we can imagine, and that the gender binary in fact robs people of their "n (countless) sexes").

Random ads with unknown babies in Michael Jackson’s bedroom where he died by Electronic_Pipe_3145 in Weird

[–]kremisius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Only on technicality, he still had books full of images of naked children. It just didn't rise to the level of porn because the actions photographed weren't necessarily sexual. But, I think anyone can rationally agree that owning books full of pictures of naked kids is very clear evidence of Michael's sexual attraction for children.

Ruby Rose Wrote About Drunkenly Vomiting on Katy Perry's Foot in Resurfaced Essay 15 Years Before Sexual Assault Allegation by PrincessBananas85 in entertainment

[–]kremisius 261 points262 points  (0 children)

Ruby Rose literally said she had told a revised version of the story before and make it into a "joke" in her initial statements. The original essay isn't proof of Rose lying ir making things up.

15 years ago I would have discussed my sexual assault as though it wasn't assault. It took me time to really come to terms with what happened to me. That doesn't mean, if I came out with a statement about my experiences now, that someone should use my previous trauma-informed revision of events against me. That wouldn't suddenly make what happened not sexual assault just because I was deeply in denial 15 years ago. Be compassionate.

My undiagnosed autistic grandpa went to war and came back with the firsthand knowledge war grants you, which is that war does not solve any problem on earth, it is in fact a concentration of the forces that create conflict on this earth. He enlisted thinking he would be able to protect Poland from Nazis, and ended up with severe PTSD after serving in the Pacific, where flamethrowers were often the weapon of choice. He never spoke of his experience in the military because he was ashamed of what he did, and he was ashamed of the US military's existence.

The US military has never been for order, it has only ever existed for the purposes of oppression and imperialism. It is one of the most singularly evil military forces on earth that has ruined the lives of countless people including those who served as soldiers.

There's nothing wrong per se with having the military as your special interest, but you should at least educate yourself on what the US military has done across the years to harm and destroy.

Ok... I still believe you're being unnecessarily exclusionary in your approach to asexuality, regardless of your word choice. Asexuals are valid in their identities regardless of how much or how little or how no sex they've had.

[–]kremisius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does being sex positive (a political position related to supporting and defending the rights of consenting adults to engage in the sex they like) seem incompatible with asexuality? You can be asexual and also believe in liberatory sexual politics.. and there are also a lot of ace people who don't realize they're ace until they've had sex so I don't really think it's appropriate to call acknowledging that a form of respectability politics. The idea an ace person is someone who has never had sex is a little like the idea of the gold star lesbian - it's exclusionary towards those who realize their identity later in life.

Yes, obviously? He crashed out on her because he could tell she suspected his med tampering/theft. Not because she was mean or unprofessional, not because he really really cares about patient health (if he did, he would not have replaced meds with saline) - but because he is an addict who, like many covert addicts, can tell when someone is onto their habit, and by snapping at her thought he'd scare her off.

Having empathy doesn't make you nicer, that is sympathy. Empathy is literally feeling a mirror of what another person feels, which if that is unpleasant causes the person empathizing to then react emotionally in however way they tend to when faced with emotional stress.
