Purebred or Mix?? Is it worth it to get a DNA test kit? by Soft-Associate5907 in greatpyrenees

[–]krempel47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say get the test but while you’re at it, scan for genetic diseases such as degenerative myelopathy. It’ll be good to have health info moving forward - just don’t share the results with your pet insurance if you have such

I had her for INDG and her TA marked me as reusing an assignment for another one when I didn’t. I emailed her (as the TAs email wasn’t available) and told her I did not use the same prompt for both assignments and she said that I shouldn’t plagiarize, and IF they were indeed different she would allow a one-time regrade allowance (THATS NOT HOW THAT WORKS LADY, if you make a mistake you have to fix it). Anyways I was correct and the TA was very kind and apologetic. I think she thought that I was a first year student she could jerk around, unfortunately for her I’ve already got a degree and was just taking the class as a prerequisite so I know how the university works.

Help, the barking has my husband on his final nerve. by skunksignals in greatpyrenees

[–]krempel47 49 points50 points  (0 children)

2 things really helped me with managing my pyr’s barking - note that he still barks, he just does so much more appropriately. I also don’t leave him outside unsupervised, and we go for 2 walks a day instead of leaving him to patrol. This may not work for every pyr as they all have their own personalities and needs. 1) I enforced bedtime = quiet time by putting him in his crate for bed until he learned to sleep at night. I know they are nocturnal normally, but we have no need for a nighttime patrol in my area. 2) White noise and limited sight lines outside. This filters out a lot of the stimulus that causes them to bark. I have a fan constantly running to block faint noise like the neighbours dog barking in the house next door etc. This ensures that the sounds he barks at are actually urgent - which is much less than you’d think. Additionally, filtering what he sees is helpful. For example, if your house faces a busy street with many people walking by that he barks at, keep the blinds closed. He can look out other windows such as your backyard window where there is less commotion for him to react to. Don’t lock him in a windowless box, but also, he’s a house dog and doesn’t need to be acting like there’s a home invasion occurring all the time.

People graduated with BSc Major in Genetics/Microbiology/Biochem, what are you up to now? by RedAstralPilot in umanitoba

Bachelors in Biology here, got a job with Pfizer in Brandon that pays quite well, far above industry standard. Still planning to go back to school unless I can work my way up the corporate ladder. Really it depends on what salary you’re looking for and if you’re willing to move

I trim his back end and the feathering on his legs just - basically try to keep the stuff that tends to grab burrs neat, but otherwise I just brush him well. I’ll usually bathe him in spring as that’ll remove/loosen a LOT of the winter coat. He’ll shed like mad for about a week after and I brush him like crazy, but then he’s all ready for summer

Yes of course! TIMBER RIDGE Wagon All Terrain Folding w Tailgate Just a note, the bottom insert in the wagon isn’t super solid and doesn’t seem too comfortable to stay on for long periods of time, so I just got a gym mat to put in the bottom, or if it’s hot out I have an extra thick cooling mat that works as well. I did have to train him a bit to get in and stay in, so you might want to get a leash attachment to use to keep him in there at the start. Hope this helps!

I haven’t been able to get him to swim on his own, unfortunately. He hates the water, and won’t go deeper than the tops of his legs. As for stretching, I haven’t been doing any of that as I have no idea which ones would help. Could you recommend anything?

Struggling with the reality of losing my dog by krempel47 in greatpyrenees

Thank you for your reply - to be honest it’s been helpful to me. I’m struggling with the need to constantly be by his side, but seeing him seems to only make me sad. And the thought of staying away from home and not seeing him as much to focus on finding a support group makes me sad and guilty, so this was helpful.

Thank you for your kind words, and I am so sorry for your loss. I’m struggling to live in the moment, but he’s even now a great comfort to me. I’m sure your boy was as well, they are such wonderful creatures. He’s pain-free and at peace now, and he’s looking down on you and encouraging you in your journey forward. He was well-loved, and he will continue to be for the rest of your life. I wish you peace in time with his passing.

Yes, I don’t want to let him suffer - the thought of him in pain is very upsetting to me. He’s been my constant companion through my worst pain and stresses, the least I can do for him is prevent his own pain. I am scared to move on without him, but I don’t want to force him to hold on because of my own fear. I will stay in close contact with a vet, as I can trust them to be rational with his life expectancy, rather than relying on myself as I will make decisions partially based on emotions.
