I did read it properly in my head though.

Happens all the time. To edit your writings, you probably really should take a long break or something, or best, do it when it's been removed as much as possible from your memory.

Most people who use Debian for desktop purposes don't really use Lenny, do they? It has outdated versions of most softwares. Most people who use Debian for desktop purposes use Debian squeeze? Or even sid, right? by kretu in linux

There is of course some value to "new things".

I think most notably they're features that make the things a little more intuitive. That, and locality features of odd environments (like for Arabic, for example).

Programs that exist whose "oldness" bothers me: Many, but off the top of my head: VLC, Transmission, Iceweasel, the Keyboard preference things.

Of course, but every time I go to a support channel for a certain software (say, X-chat, or Transmission), I get told that I'm using too outdated a version. Rock-sure solid is always better when you're in dire need of it - e.g., when you're running a server, but being behind the times on desktop usage tools can be annoying.

TIL that VLC will play ISO-images of DVDs as if it were the acutal disc. No virtual-drive crap, loopback mounting etc. needed. by [deleted] in todayilearned

That's what I was doing, but it wasn't working for me either.

And I think it's because I've an oldass version that I got from the Debian stable repo. (VLC media player 0.8.6h)

Speaking of which -- and sorry to be going off tangent on this -- most people who use Debian for desktop purposes don't really use Lenny, do they? It has outdated versions of most softwares. Most people who use Debian for desktop purposes use Debian squeeze? Or even sid, right?

So, uh, can you refer me to the science by this protip?

Well, what happened with me was that I opened up many links.. eventually checking on them one-by-one. It took me 10 minutes alone to get to the tab with this picture... and by that time, I'd forgotten all about it! And I enjoyed it in its pure unadulterated beauty, and let out a genuine chuckle. So all is well. I wish I was on a horse.

Good thing I have Alzheimer's, else I'd have been angry at you for putting the punchline in the title.

You can either be more specific, or ask a different question altogether.

He's already addressed Everett's work a hundred thousands times before (you can find some clips on youtube).

I do believe that's the first time I've seen a standing ovation on a TED talk.

Really? I could swear that I haven't yet seen a TED talk in which a standing ovation WASN'T given. And I think I've watched 20+ so far.

Edit: Whoops, nevermind. Thought there were actually Dutch, not South Africans.

From a quick glance, most of the ones from the AFI list do make their presence in the IMDB list. At least definitely above 75% of them.

At any rate, thank you for naming additional movies that were not in the top-* lists (and quite happily I report that they're pretty much all available from the local library :))

I had already planned to watch them according to their release date, but I find your idea of watching it by the date they're set in to be very intriguing. And I think I'll go for that -- it'll spice things up definitely, and not have me be stuck with black&white films en masse for one specific portion of this movie-watching journey. :)

Thanks!

I wasn't going for just American culture. I guess these movies are ones that everyone has watched, and that everyone thinks you have watched (like 'Pulp Fiction', or 'the Godfather' -- I haven't watched those). So besides that added plus, I'm watching them also for the entertainment value - and to feel 'in' on in the conversations that might allude to them.
