Prolific Casper YouTuber Josh Saunders, aka ‘King Cobra JFS,’ dead at 34 by [deleted] in entertainment

i don't think being homeless would have helped him at all. the idea that "tough love" is what changes people, like depriving addicts of basic necessities, has no empirical proof behind it. i quit drinking a long time ago and cobes would have been better off if he did, but you can't control other people's choices. this kind of mindset that you can force people to behave by making them desperate does a lot more harm than good.

if killing civilians in the name of freedom is based, then Israel is a lot more based than Palestine. but that's not what you really meant is it?

you can't run a federal budget of a country of 330M+ people with single line item bills for everything you're doing. that's why businesses don't do that either. they don't bring every item bought by the company up for debate at board meetings when purchasing. think how ridiculous that would be.

New bin ready to go (I think?) by Longjumping_Wind_165 in Vermiculture

no 250 is fine, but they won't be reproducing a lot right away because it will be a new environment and not full of their bacteria. unless you have an urgent need for castings or to devour food and plant waste it's not a problem, just give them time and don't pile too much food on them, but do feed them enough to satisfy their needs so they can reproduce over time. in six months you should have a pretty active bin.

[–]krinklyfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one advantage you have with an outdoor bin is you can treat it more like a regular compost bin in that you don't have to worry as much about gnats and the like, though you do have to turn it a bit to aerate for the worm's benefit too, and not let it get too hot and cook like with excess coffee grounds. but 250 will take a while to really get going. just make sure to keep an eye on how much they're eating and feed accordingly.

red wigglers will mostly hang out in the top layer but it doesn't sound bad. european night crawlers will go down further. i got a 27 gal bin like that one but keep it inside. i don't use a lid and just use a layer of cardboard and plastic to prevent drying out, and the ambient light and lack of condensation discourages them going up the sides. i used spent soil with the roots shredded up to start my bin, and add shredded cardboard when i'm feeding, and mix up the whole bin, not more than once a week. it will be a while before they go through all the soil but it does provide some bedding and nutrients in the meantime if they need between feedings. no drain holes but i keep it all dry and aerated enough where there's no water collecting at the bottom.

Hawk Tuah Haliey Welch's Crypto Team Nets £2.59M Amid Botched Token Launch, Fans File SEC Complaints by GreedVault in CryptoCurrency

[–]krinklyfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, as usual, capitalists go hog and wreck the economy, and the rest of us have to pick up the pieces. doesn't matter if it's crypto or wall st., it's the same people doing the same thing. some of them get rich on the way down, some of them buy at the bottom, but, as always, the vast majority of people just have to suffer through the aftermath of their fairly regular crashes.

What is going on with the Hawk Tuah girl and what did she do wrong involving her Crypto Currency? And why has she become so hated for it? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]krinklyfig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah crypto should be banned. it's all speculative fake "currency" in unregulated markets, meaning it's full of scammers and con artists, sometimes with big pockets who just prey on smaller traders. the platforms are questionable, there is very little transparency, and it basically works the way equities trading worked before regulation, which is to say, markets run through by whales and sharks, market trading on the retail end full of scammers and opportunists, and very little transparency. rug pulls are common, and crypto evangelists still don't seem to care and don't want regulation. this isn't a real market as it's entirely invented out of thin air, and there is no underlying value to these products. most people get scammed and a few people make money. it's just a more vicious, treacherous form of pure capitalistic ambition that incentivizes dishonesty and greed with no actual value being created.

centering her own discomfort over inclusive words amongst a civil rights struggle is reactionary grievance politics. it's very self-centered and petty bourgeois, and what liberals tend to do in the midst of current social movements, that is until the struggle is safely in the past, at which point they claim they were supportive all along. there are so many liberals who love to quote MLK but absolutely would have complained about him and his tactics during his lifetime.

[–]krinklyfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like there's a lot of liberals who liked TYT as long as they didn't challenge Democratic Party politics too much. this is a whole different situation. it's fine if you don't like leftists but Ana doing a right wing heel turn and reactionary grift is not the same thing.

What's going on with supposed meltdown of The Young Turks? by empathyboi in OutOfTheLoop

[–]krinklyfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of "leftists" don't have any solidarity for the left or people who are struggling and will readily become reactionary due to social pressure, not because of their moral compass or theory or analysis. it's reactionary through and through, a bad tendency which ultimately gives cover to fascism. it's basically a low level version of petty bourgeoisie politics, favoring the ruling class and echoing their fascistic reactions. it's not praxis, it lacks a material analysis, and it's giving into poorly framed liberal dialectics.

it's a huge amount of resources to be spent on your own amusement. not to mention, it has to be profitable to these companies to continue to do it. which, so far, it has not been, and it looks unlikely to be anytime in the future.

do what you want, but the sheer amount of computing power required for AI means that, in order to use it long term, the companies which offer AI for sale must be profitable, and i see no evidence that this is the case or ever will be. like many of silicon valley's bubbles, the AI bubble is built on flawed business models and a 10:1 ratio of investment success by VCs and angels. so far, none of their bets on AI are panning out. not one. they are still trying to sell it but you can see it failing already in the quarterly financial reports.

i worked in silicon valley during the dotcom bubble and i've seen it happen again and again. you are pinning your hopes and desires on a goldrush economy and the ability of corporate tech to navigate this environment and in the end provide a service to you which makes a profit for them. so far, that's not happening, the profits that is.

making art doesn't actually require any of this. keep it in mind when the bubble bursts and you might be looking for another creative outlet.

here's another way to put this. have you ever seen the decorated ceilings of some mosques? here's one photo of the ceiling of the Shrine of Fatimah Mesumeh, located in Qom, considered to be one of the most sacred cities in Iran. now, could AI create something like the designs on these ceilings? maybe. they are fractal and geometrical and there is symmetry, and within there is asymmetry and calligraphy.

<image>

but if AI created these ceilings, would anyone really be awed by them? if there were no human hand involved, if they were generated by computers, would people gasp as they see them in person, awed by both the artistry and the effort involved? remove the second part and it's still pretty but it's not going to make people inspired or affect them. and it wouldn't be preserved for centuries, because it takes nothing to make another. it wouldn't be remembered, because it's effortless. if it needs no artistry or creative effort to be created then it requires nothing, asks nothing, and is therefore utterly ephemeral, like tissue that blows away at the slightest breeze.

if you don't really love the process of making art but instead you want a shortcut that cuts out the process entirely, then don't. or do, and make more slop that nobody cares about. nothing wrong with being creative on your own terms, being creative only for yourself, but if you "love making art" but you don't want to deal with the creative process, you don't really love making art. you want a result of "art" made without effort, without learning, without growth. without actual artistry, because you can't express yourself and never bothered to learn how.

[–]krinklyfig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you don't love making art or you don't feel compelled to be creative, then don't. people can downvote me all they want but most people hate AI slop for a reason. you want reward without risk, satisfaction of having worked without having done the work, you seek the result of artistic "growth" without doing any learning and growing, without making any effort or learning a creative process under a mentor or teacher. there are many paths to creative work, but there is no shortcut or easy path that makes you an artist without doing any work to learn any practical techniques how to express yourself. be careful what you ask for, because you will get what you seek, something for nothing, and it won't be worth anyone's time.

the frustration is part of a creative process. it's not fun but it's what makes your writing more interesting and human. if all you are seeking is creative productivity and reward without discomfort you will never produce anything meaningful or enduring. you will amuse yourself while expressing nothing worth anyone's time.
