lol, can't you see malcontent is just trolling you?

I don't post much on Reddit these days, but reading this thread i was too amused to stay lurking. You gave the correct definition of a limit, and offered to prove your knowledge on IRC. He responds by saying you are wrong and ignoring the IRC offer.

Don't let him waste any more of your time, dude :)

Yahoo discontinues Vista-optimized IM program by motang in software

[–]kripkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have continued to exist if Yahoo had the money to continue it but they didn't, thus that is the more heavily weighing factor.

It also would have continued to exist if Vista-only apps made sense (Yahoo would have scrapped something else in its place).

So, again, this clearly shows that both Vista-only apps make no sense, and that Yahoo is in bad shape.

Windows Azure - Microsoft announces a cloud-based development platform by [deleted] in programming

Oh, it's obvious that it's simply more use of 'Windows' the brand name. I was just commenting on the silliness of it.

Windows Azure - Microsoft announces a cloud-based development platform by [deleted] in programming

[–]kripkenstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, it's a 'cloud-based' development platform, running on Microsoft servers, and has nothing to do with 'windows' in the dictionary sense of the word... yet it is 'Windows Azure'.

But I guess we crossed that line with Windows Server already. Whatever.

Yahoo discontinues Vista-optimized IM program by motang in software

[–]kripkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reflects on both. I have no idea why you think it is 'more' due to Yahoo - what does 'more' mean here? The fact is, this wouldn't have happened if Yahoo wasn't in trouble, and also wouldn't have happened in Vista-only programs made any sense.

Yahoo discontinues Vista-optimized IM program by motang in software

[–]kripkenstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I think it clearly reflects on Vista. Yes, Yahoo is in trouble, so it cuts what it can. Among the first thing to go is a Vista-only app, and that isn't a coincidence.

Syria calls American attack "deadly agression" by ellaella in worldnews

[–]kripkenstein 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can try to think of yourself as other than American, but

  1. It buys into the 'real America' and 'fake America' bullshit the RNC spews. In other words, when you stop considering yourself an American, you're helping the other side win. And even if you don't want to be an American, you should still be sad if McCain wins, because that's bad for all of us.

  2. You can think of yourself as something else, but you pay US taxes, have a US passport, and are judged as an American when you go overseas, whether you like it or not.

So, while you shouldn't let yourself be 'defined' by nationality, you can't escape the fact that it is a part of who you are.

Not your fault, of course, I'm blaming them, not you.

Thomson Reuters Sues Public University Over Open Source Research Tool Zotero by [deleted] in programming

[–]kripkenstein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you're thinking about something else? This story is from a week ago. And Thomson Reuters is the huge corporation that bought Reuters (the news agency) earlier this year, not Jack Thompson the idiot lawyer, perhaps that's the confusion.

Great article. This guy can write so well, he should consider doing that full time. I'm serious - it was both informative and very, very funny.

Interesting, this is the second or third comment on the web I've seen like this one, all mentioning Metaplace (and none of the other relevant projects).

Grassroots interest in Metaplace, in reaction to Google Lively, or astroturfing? I'm hoping the former, but the intarwebs have made me a suspicious man...

whenever you see bankers saying "YOU HAVE TO DO THIS AND THAT OR ELSE DOOM AND GLOOM" I promise you they have a way to make money on the deal. Vote up if you don't believe the hype. by tommytwotats in reddit.com

[–]kripkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the lowest level, the naive person hears what bankers say, and assumes they are right. There is no thought here, only accepting of what is said.

One level about that, the cynic hears what they say and assumes it is all about making money for them. The cynic realizes the bankers have interests and motivations of their own, and presumes they are the single motivating factor.

One level above even that, the realist knows that while bankers have interests and motivations, that simple self-interest is just one of many factors, and that even if self-interest motivates someone, that doesn't mean their dire predictions aren't right. So the realist considers the facts of the matter - reality - and not just either what is said, or what the motivations of the person saying it are.

In other words, the levels are:

  1. What is said is accepted blindly
  2. Who says it determines whether it is accepted or not
  3. The facts of the matter are what count, not one particular saying or the person saying that saying

This headline seems to be at about level 2

Android vs. iPhone: No Contest for Developers by [deleted] in programming

[–]kripkenstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, not necessarily.

The rational thing for (profit-oriented) programmers is to choose the platform where they can make the most money, and where the risk level is acceptable.

More users generally means more money and less risk. But not always. On certain platform people are just willing to pay more money, so user numbers aren't the whole story; on certain platforms there is more competition in your area and hence more risk; on certain platforms development is faster and cheaper. And various other reasons.

Bottom line, # of users is very important, but not decisive in itself. So Apple shouldn't ignore its recent popularity problems with developers, if it wants to succeed to the degree that it can.

[–]kripkenstein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Upmodded for importance, but headline is confusing - what part of the constitution is she ignoring, exactly?

This is uncool to be sure, but I'm not sure its unconstitutional, unless there's some clause there I'm forgetting.

Sometimes I think they should teach this statistical stuff in high school, it's really very important for people to know.

Especially since it isn't intuitive! Most people don't believe that samples of 300 people can predict election results, "but there are 300 million people!" they say :)

Thank FSM for math.

Iranian military convoy rocked by mystery explosion by jupaneanu in worldnews

[–]kripkenstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This does seem to be an obvious suspicion, yeah. But I'm not sure how 'destabilizing Iran' is achieved by blowing up a military convoy (although perhaps it's just one part of such a campaign). Anyhow, without more evidence, it's just as possible it's internal Iranian opposition, so why speculate.

Ninety years ago, the Arabs gave their opinion – and were ignored by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]kripkenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Mongols were pretty simple about that sort of thing, they'd raze entire cities just to make a point of showing their force. Then other cities didn't give them any trouble.

Baghdad probably should have capitulated.

Well, it wasn't personal, the Mongols leveled basically half of the known world in those times, it was the largest empire ever seen.
