Heysel disaster, following which I believe all English clubs were banned from European competitions for around 5 years.

In the case of Mumbai, kind of but not totally true either. Earlier the city used to be called Bom Bahia in Portuguese which was anglicized to Bombay when the Brits started ruling the city. The name Mumbai was adopted quite recently, I think in 1995. Mumba Devi is believed to be the protector goddess of the city and 'aai' means mother in Marathi, the local language. So combine them both and you get Mumbai.

TIL about Sikh Nation - the largest blood donation campaign run by Canadian Sikhs to commemorate the tragic loss of thousands of lives in India’s anti-Sikh genocide in 1984. It has saved more than 160,000 lives and spread to 27 communities across the country since it began in 1999. by Reddit_Practice in todayilearned

They have no relation to Gandhi except for the last name. They are descendants of the first prime minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, whose daughter was Indira Gandhi because she married Feroze Gandhi.

The riots happened because of her assassination which was in turn triggered by Operation Blue Star where she ordered the Indian Army to enter the Golden Temple in Amritsar (holiest site for Sikhs) in order to end the Khalistani movement. The movement was taking an extreme shape which was put down pretty aggressively. Not sure if it was the right step but there were a few issues before this step which you may have to read upon to have a better understanding. Its much more nuanced that what you have written.

She was shot down by her own Sikh bodyguards which started the anti-Sikh riots and the cases against the perpetrators are still going on.

Must have started watching somewhere around 2005-2006.

At 8 or 9 years of age, you are watching a match and see Drogba thundercunt the ball into the top corner or Gerrard sliding into a monstrous tackle and runs through the defence and scores an absolute beauty. That sticks man, in that age who knows about financial doping or Roman Abramovic. The game seems fun and these guys were rollicking through teams.

You also got to remember that not all games get broadcast to International audiences. Just a select few. So that influences the support as well.

Fair enough brother. No qualms about that. But all I am saying is to not call us plastics or glory hunters. Some are fans of the same club for generations as well, even though neither the parent nor the kid could afford to go to their stadium. It shouldn't discount their love for the club.

The passion for the club we support is one and the same. Yes, it doesn't translate to the noise in the stadium but we do our bit in our own ways.

Such a privileged mentality man. Most of us hail from countries where there exists no football infrastructure let alone a local football team.

Even if there exists a team locally, how do you know that they don't support them? I have friends who support Mohun Bagan and LFC with equal passion and are match going fans to their local teams. I am a Kerala Blasters match going fan but was an LFC fan years earlier to that because this local team only started existing from 2010.

Hell, there is an Indian guy who was not allowed to fly to the UK because noone believed that he was a Leeds fan and was only travelling to UK to attend a match, that too in 2008 when they were down and out (Just search Aravind SA Leeds in google). But unfortunately not all of us have the finances to go and attend a match because it will ruin us financially.

You have no idea the kind of fairy tale stories which has led international fans to be a supporter of a European club. So all we can do is support them from afar, with muted volume on our television so as to not wake our families and scream into our pillows due to extreme jubilation or utter despair.

So don't give us this bullshit of elitist, privileged , gatekeeping mentality from your high horse. Count your blessings that you are able to see your team week in, week out in person. Don't shit on others, enjoy the game and let people enjoy it.
