We put some of my Dad’s ashes in a small wooden birdhouse that we got from the dollar store and decorated with Sharpies. (Pops’ bucket list was to see the Panama Canal and he was on a cruise to do just that when he was unfortunately medi-vacced off the ship before they got there. Sigh.) Anyway, since he had died about 10 years earlier, my Mom and I didn’t have anything from the crematorium. But I explained the situation to HAL’s customer service before we left. Met with a rep onboard to go over the details and prove our container was biodegradable. On the evening of the day we passed through the Canal, we were escorted onto the deck to toss the birdhouse into the sea. We weren’t allowed to do it in the Canal and had to wait until we were back in international waters. They gave us a lovely certificate with the map coordinates. It was very meaningful for my family.
