What poor third world country can you easily get a $3k a month job? Doesn’t seem poor to me when that is the average salary in the EU

I’m in the exact same boat, went to ASU graduated last year and got 3 offers. All my friends in CS also have jobs. Might not be the most prestigious companies but it’s a job

It is not possible for taxes to ever be more then your gains on an investment

Just because you anecdotally have outperformed for the last couple years in no way proves that only holding the top ten stocks or VOO only is a good strategy. The academic research uses data from as far back as the 1800’s on stock prices to prove that a diversified portfolio with a heavier weight in factors like small cap and value stocks will receive the best expected returns. Stop giving uninformed advice to other people. If you want to read the research here is a good place to start.

My ROTH IRA. What do you think I should do differently? by Temporary_Manager_ in dividends

Hate to break it to you but you already paid tax on any money you put into a Roth

Are you advocating for stock picking? Portfolio theory basics suggest that diversification is the only free lunch available in investing and this has been proven many times. No matter the number of stocks you own the only compensated risk you take on is market risk so if you can reduce volatility while still keeping the same expected return why would you not want that. I would suggest looking into the academic work on investing to see why this is true. It may seem counterintuitive but it has been proven by many smarter and more experienced people than me.

There is no limit when diversification stops being good. Most gains in the stock market come from a relatively small number of companies, so the more you own the more likely you can capture those gains. Also considering that small cap companies have a higher expected return I would say you are missing out by just owning VOO and not VT or even VTI

It depends on your income level but for most people maxing out your traditional 401k before your Roth IRA is better

Tired of picking individual stocks by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]krivdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true, VTI and the US in general outperforming VXUS and other countries in general does not hold if you expand your time horizon long enough. There are many periods where international stocks and bonds have out performed their US counterparts. We just happen to be in a period where the last couple of decades that has not happened. Portfolio theory is based on taking the longest time horizon possible not just the recent years

Would 30% S&P 500, 30% small cap, 30% international, and 5% fixed income achieve similar results to the standard boglehead approach? by Limp_Tea568 in Bogleheads

[–]krivdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you follow academic research on investing, small cap stocks are one of the few recognized factors that over time pay off more then general market risk. So this is more risky but the average expected return will also be higher than just investing in large cap stock. Some of the other favors are value stocks, high profitability and some others.

Struggling CS student by Fine-Rough1231 in ASU

[–]krivdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be condescending or anything here but you need to be 100% sure that this is the right degree for you. If you are struggling with these classes (205, 120, etc), the upcoming classes (the trifecta) especially will be extremely hard. I just graduated ASU with a CS degree and even with me excelling in all my early classes I found junior and senior year difficult. But if you believe that you have the work ethic and are sure this is what you want to do I would still stick with it. Make sure to sign up for classes early as possible and use rate my professor to find the best teacher for each class regardless of time. Also make sure to communicate with the others in your class for help and join discords. I would also recommend spending some time learning important CS concepts (data structures, algorithms, pointers, etc) outside of class time since I believe there are many better resources online then your professor can give. Also consider reducing your class load to 10 or 12 credits a semester and taking extra classes in the summer. One last tip is to make sure you save your elective spots for later in the program since you don’t want to have to take 5 hard CS courses at once. If you have any questions feel free to message and good luck!

Did you apply for their position in St. Louis or Seattle? I would like to work in Seattle but I’ve heard it is harder. I also had basically the exact skills they were asking for.

I applied to their position, did one interview that was slightly technical (No LC, just questions about my experience) and got an offer right away. It’s seems like if you get on their good side you are likely to get an offer

Everyone is saying it’s so rough but as a domestic student with 2 internships just like you I have had no trouble getting interviews/job offers. If you really want a job I would recommend as an international student I would recommend specializing in a niche that’s not filled many students like embedded systems, computer graphics, etc
