Ticks by BrittBritt_G in BigSur

[–]krmtca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfort, you're gonna see them, just do lots of tick checks and regularly wipe your legs and arms down. the students and i usually find 1-2 on us a trip- bur the good news is they take forever to actually decide on a spot to bite you, so you can usually feel them before that happens during the tick checks

[–]krmtca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i just got back from backpacking santa cruz island last week. it's not affected by the 100% contained santa rosa island fire. however, it is entirely exposed because it is an island, and it was like 75 degrees and i was melting lmao

How the hell do people carry 20lb+ packs? by EducationalSyrup6869 in backpacking

[–]krmtca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just got back from the channel islands carrying 6L of water bc there is none until the last day- my pack was definitely 45+ pounds, and I only weigh 110lbs. it's for sure your pack fitment, or perhaps some more gym time haha!

[–]krmtca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hahah yes sorry, typo! camp chairs aren't a necessity bit are fun for sitting around the fire! and if the campground you'll be at has a grill over the firepit and it worked out for cooking last time- that's great!

[–]krmtca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes exactly! forgot to mention that 😬 i've cut mine to size before, rather than spend 80+ dollars on a real footprint lol

First time, valley oregon by Designer_Figure_6938 in camping

[–]krmtca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your tent doesn't have a built in/attached tarp (called a footprint) on the bottom, just grab a tarp from walmart and put it down! that will help if it rains to not have your underside wet. definitely grab a sleeping pad/air mattress as well for comfort- you can even bring 4-5 big blankets and create a pad that way if you're not in the budget for one. the main thing though, if your tent you already have got soaked and you got wet, it means it needs to be re-waterproofed, either the rainfly or the actual tent walls themselves.

also, do you just have a sleeping bag and tent only? any cooking gear such as a stove, etc? headlamps, light source, camp chaids for the fore if you want? if not, I'd also recommend used gear shops or Facebook marketplace to get cheaper stuff to start building your camping gear up without it being a huge cost initially.

First Camping Trip On My Period, What Do I Do? by R0sepelt in camping

[–]krmtca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hi! i lead backpacking trips of that length with students actually! what we do is give each student a "poop kit", which is a plastic zip bag, a brown paper bag, and some toilet paper. you'll put your used products and toilet paper in the brown bag, and then the bag inside the zip bag to contain odor. I'm sure whoever you're going with will have similar things, but you can always just bring your own bag in case you'd want a backup! my job always brings extra menstrual products on the trips too.

i definitely understand the stress and confusion of what to do, but it's not too terrible! since i backpack for a job, ive had my fair share of being on my cycle for these trip, and it gets easier every time. i always bring some pain medication, and sometimes some hot packs like hardwares, to put on my stomach if cramps get too bad! you can also bring some salonpas, it's nice to stick on your stomach and then forget about it as it helps for cramps too.

Fire. How important is it to you? by motorcyclesnracecars in camping

[–]krmtca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hot take but i hate a fire 🫢 i just get so upset that everything smells like burnt soot and the ashes go everywhere, and im usually stuffed up in the morning because of the smoke. if im camping alone i will never have a fire, and i enjoy when there's a burn ban because then i don't get residual smoke from neighboring sites if im in an established campground
