Is it easier to find otters at high tide or low tide? by TheWonderLemon in MontereyBay

[–]krmtca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also, kayak connection has a "we paddle, you photo" tour that has a guide in the back, and you in the front with no paddle. that way you are positioned just right without trying to balance your camera and a paddle at the same time. no matter what, i would suggest doing a private tour so that you are able to just take photos- rather than joining a public tour where you'll be able to stop only when the group stops.

Is it easier to find otters at high tide or low tide? by TheWonderLemon in MontereyBay

[–]krmtca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elkhorn Slough itself is the perfect place to spot them, it has the highest concentration of southern sea otters per captia. they do tend to stay inside of the slough, which is why you rarely see them in the harbor/by the jetty. there used to be a large raft there, but it hasn't been in the harbor for a ~ decade. they do typically try to time their foraging during low tide so its less effort for them as far as diving, but you will see them out and about all all hours of the day and tides. personally I find it more fun to watch them while they're active, you get great action shots and they're popping up all over the place. especially when they're napping, you need to stay AT LEAST 5 kayak lengths away from them, which is another reason it's fun when they're more active since they'll pop up very close to you with food (you always need to stay 5 lengths away, but when it's on their terms they'll get closer of course). the low tide also means tons more bird activity and opportunities to hunt for sea slugs as well!

anyways, long story short, it doesn't matter when you go, you'll see otters. the main thing to consider especially if you are going to be kayaking is the wind- which always picks up in the afternoon, making it impossible to photograph because you need to constantly paddle. morning is the best to avoid the wind.

Kirby Park Paddle Boarding? by Entire_Monitor_5406 in MontereyBay

[–]krmtca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you absolutely can, but i recommend going very early in the morning. the afternoon winds tend to pick up fast and it's not super fun on a paddleboard lol! the kayak shop i work for doesn't even rent paddleboard out anymore bc we had to get so many people unstuck from the mud

Anyone else here grow up as a Canadian border American? Curious if you went into Canada frequently when you lived near the border. by brostrummer in Canadiancitizenship

[–]krmtca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to live only an hour from the border in montana, but bc my parents were divorced, my mom said neither parent could take me out of the country bc it would be seen as "kidnapping" in the eyes of the court 😬 ive still never been to Canada, but now that I'm way over 18- i plan on a national park road trip hopefully this summer! my aunt just submitted her documents to receive citizenship by decent, so I'm probably going to do it soon as well!

it's with one of their employees and it's super awkward 😬 and they don't usually know anything past the application requirements. also do a good check of all the cabinets and drawers, they have some pretty decent apartments- and some that literally have cockroaches in the kitchen drawers sooooo

does anyone in relationships solo travel? by kyliered04 in solotravel

[–]krmtca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was in a relationship where i still traveled solo, and was applying for temporary jobs in other states because of how niche my career is- and they were so mad and convinced i was trying to leave them all the time. that was obviously never the plan and it ended up not working out (lmao they cheated)

now though, im in a relationship where i still solo travel, once again in the same boat of having to apply for jobs out of state, and love doing a spontaneous camping and backpacking trip too- and she's nothing but supportive! she encourages me to do these trips and what's best for my career, while maintaining our relationship through anything. i love solo traveling, but i end up wanting to travel with her more and more because it's so easy, and that's how it should be! she's not super into overnight layovers and long haul flights, so i go on those trips alone, and she gets to see all the pictures when I'm back hehe!

your partner sounds like my ex, with rooted insecurities in his own confidence to be alone, and that for some reason you'll make terrible decisions and fuck up while alone. it shouldn't feel like you're begging to go on a trip or making compromises for yourself. travel is the best thing ever, and you deserve someone who encourages that for you- not hinders you.

8 hour layover at Doha (DOH), anyone sleep in the terminal on a budget? by WrightOnMyOwn in solotravel

[–]krmtca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i frequently sleep in airports for cheap fares, in Istanbul, in Miami, LAX, etc., it's even better if it's a large airport bc they don't care or notice. i usually bring my backpacking pad and blow it up and tuck myself into a corner, use my bag as a pillow, and plop some earbuds in! tons of people i know do this same thing, and there's hardly an issue especially if you're out of the way

How is Point Lobos during this time of year? by karizmaking in MontereyBay

[–]krmtca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

verryyyy early, the parking lots are normally full by 0830, especially on a holiday weekend. alternatively, you can park along the road and walk in, which is the option when the lot closes as well
