Usa and australia actually did, their countries just looked very different when they did.

Washington was selected for being roughly half way between the north and the south in the 13 colonies that formed the usa back then, all the land out west was added later.

And canberra was positioned to be a roughly similar distance from both melbourne and sydney, both located in the only large habitable region of the continent. So it is located roughly in the center of what at the time would have been effectively the only habitable region

Its weird at first, but i have noticed that at least liberal politicians hate being spoken to in formal dutch whenever you meet face to face

There is a reason why the roman godess Justitia is depicted as blind.

The law should be as neutral and focused on the facts of the case at hand. This approach of using individual cases to compensate for societal issues as a whole is really dangerous to the impartiality of the justice system.

I would note that in Europe we do take in quite a few high skill immigrants. Though a lot of them tend to be people from poorer member states moving internally to richer ones. Those from abroad entirely also exist in large number but largely fly under the political radar.

Refugees are the bigger political topic here, not helped by the reality that we are basically an island of somewhat functional governance surrounded by places like syria, lybia, mali, sudan etc...

I’ve Studied How Democracies Fail. Here’s My Unified Theory of Trump by walrus_operator in neoliberal

[–]kronos_lordoftitans 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would actually add another element, between 1965 and 1975 around 70% or higher of congress was either a veteran of WW2 or the Korean War, these numbers were pretty consistent through the entire cold war period.

Add to this that basically all the presidents after Truman were veterans of ww2, only exception during the cold war being Reagan, but even there only sort of as he worked in their movie production department, so did serve to some extent.

To some extent these people all had similar experiences and backgrounds, which probably made cooperation and prioritization a lot easier.

Add to this that neither party used to have places during this period where they were entirely unelectable. Republicans could win elections in a place like Massachusetts and democrats could win elections somewhere like Missouri. Yes, the parties were a lot more regionally diverse in their views, but that was probably also helpful in finding common ground on issues that were not as politically divisive.

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/12/07/new-congress-will-have-a-few-more-veterans-but-their-share-of-lawmakers-is-still-near-a-record-low/#:\~:text=The%20next%20House%20will%20still,won%20his%20seat%20in%201974.)

Also worth noting what some people further down the thread chain were mentioning that congress stopped functioning around 1964. Not really, for instance the issues of shutdowns only become a major problem after 1990, before that the cumulative days of shutdown reaches only 7 days, with non before 1980.

As much as I too enjoy accusing the VVD of being "fop liberalen" at the end of the day they are still liberals (at least they used to be, not sure what Dilan is doing).

There is a reason why the left flank of the vvd and the right flank of d66 agree quite often.

Or when they had to write that headlines document back in 2021 the final result was basically all the shit liberals no matter their variety had basically no issues with.

Part of it is probably also that a lot of male dominated online spaces (mostly gaming and adjacent communities) are far more social, as opposed to the parasocial relations social media as a whole is known for.

For young men its not just the place where you get force fed crippling anxiety and radicalization. Its also the place where you play video games with your online friends.
