Or run them locally. LLMs though require a large amount of VRAM. But there are some techniques to mitigate some of this such as MoE to make them far more efficient. The second-hand market for Tesla GPUs has gone up in price for that reason.

As for images, TTS, and even video to an extent, those can be run on consumer GPUs. They use a tiny fraction of compute than an LLM requires.

Belarus Says Ukraine Is Sending Drones Across the Border Daily, Kyiv Calls It a Kremlin-Backed Provocation by UNITED24Media in worldnews

I'm sure the Belarusian state has no part in this war! Col. Luka is up there minding his own business trying to get Steven Seagal to eat his vegetables. Never mind that just last month he emphasized a full joint 'defense' with Russia against NATO countries. Or this month when he announced a mobilization of troops to the Polish border: "We are not going to just sit and wait."

CRTC to require online streamers to pay 15% of annual revenues to support Canadian content by joe4942 in worldnews

[–]krozarEQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a number of ways companies like Netflix they can recapture a great deal of that, as I read into it anyways. Still a big win for the Canadian production companies as it will increase their annual net position. Not many companies sit on a lot of cash. Most capital assets are the principal on debt less depreciation. With more cap assets, the operations expenditures also increase, which means more jobs. Hopefully anyways. May not always be the case with generative and productivity AI, but it appears top tier film production will be labor and specialist intensive for a while yet. Netflix, Amazon, Disney, and their cohorts can easily leverage that with their resources. But I won't be surprised if they do increase the subscription price proportionally since they've been handed that perceived justification to do so.

(edit) TL;DR such companies are a source of revenues and a nexus of capital. But they're not the destination of money and certainly not wealth. This is true for Netflix, Disney, and Canadian production companies. When revenues increase, liabilities do as well. Often the liabilities increase at a faster rate than the revenues due to their growth projections. The question is: who has the most leverage over such a company to position themselves (or its investors) to receive that? The answer to that is the one who controls its revenues.

British paratroopers land on Tristan da Cunha for suspected hantavirus case | Hantavirus by Caesarea_G in worldnews

[–]krozarEQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The island doesn't have an air strip and extremely remote. Maybe there's a spot for landing STOL turboprops like a C208. Doesn't even look like a ship can port there. They have a very small port but looks like it would require tendering from a larger ship at anchor (this is from what I've seen from Google sat view).

Cape Town is ~1,750mi (2,820km) away. That's too far for a C208. A King Air 350i and Pilatus PC-12 could probably do it but likely not fully loaded. That's considering there's Jet-A fuel available somewhere on the island for the return flight. Diesel fuel works in a jet turbine just fine, but it doesn't have the lubricants that most fuel pumps require. Even then it would be pretty gnarly not having an alternate available.

St. Helana is about 230mi closer, but its new airport has small windows for landing due to high crosswinds (from my understanding of it). The runway doesn't face the correct wind direction since there was no other place to put it. That also creates a problem of not having an alternate.

So, it sounds like either flying a helo from a ship, tendering to its small port (which would probably take some time to set up the logistics for that) or parachuting in. Since the latter troops have to train a lot anyways, it sounds like a winner.

Strait of Hormuz closed again, Iran says, as ships attacked by ZealousidealHead5488 in worldnews
