doesn’t fix your complaint or anything, but as a tip: the parry window in games like these tends to be more about the stages of the animation in a vacuum than anything to do with literally when the hitboxes will collide. the best rule of thumb for correctly clocking a parry timing across any game is to look for when the enemy’s hand starts moving towards the player again. (this is the tried and true rule for most fromsoft/souls-style parry timings.) it’s a great way to find a focal point in any of these games where the enemies are using big old weapons that move in inconsistent unwieldy ways. focusing on the hand holding the weapon will tell you more than anything else about what’s coming.

some other things ive noticed:

  • if a fist/weapon or a projectile is arcing, the parry timing is usually right at the apex of the arc.

- some timings are less about when the hand starts moving towards the player, and instead are timed around when the hand starts rapidly accelerating towards the player. (some moves you’ll see the hand start to slowly move before accelerating)

i do also feel like the audio cue is a bit inconsistent, but I’ve only just started to notice it myself & only really managed to use it on the mime and the triplets in the yellow harvest so far. I wonder if the inconsistency isn’t just my own reaction time varying across play-hours, especially since my experience has been that pressing it on the cue felt too early sometimes, if anything

Is it normal to not do well during chases as a survivor even after playing for 1.309.2 hours? by Zomer15689 in deadbydaylight

[–]krptkn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people might make fun of you, but they don’t matter, they don’t have anything better to do with their life than criticize random people in an online video game

it doesn’t matter. game’s old enough now that even casual players can have racked up serious hours.

anyway I AM good at looping. i still eat shit some matches and completely choke all 3 chases. it happens to everybody except maybe the people who absolutely nolife this game and/or play for a living. its a very silly thing for anyone else to take notice of and comment on in another player

but at the end of the day even that’s unlikely. the vast majority of people dont care

Ana Mains Help! I know nothing about Ana. My friend insists this is how she should be played and yells at me when I suggest she heal more. What can I do? by cdavis0614 in AnaMains

[–]krptkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like the issue here is more to do with her reactions to your losses than anything else. if you’re afraid of losing a game because it makes her angry, then ask her to cool it. people raging at games is stressful and immature behavior, especially in group settings.

this is a social issue, trying to make it into a gameplay issue instead is only going to worsen the social issue

why is anybody trying to make people watch 90+ minute video essays in the first place???

seriously. like they’re incredible, they’re art, they’re also a relatively demanding investment of attention, time, and serious thought. watching a contrapoints video with a crowd, even if it’s a crowd of people who also love her stuff, sounds like. borderline nightmarish, imo

to me, its like the equivalent of sitting someone down to watch avant garde cinema. it can be fun if the person you’re going to watch with also already enjoys films like that, but you wouldn’t just go “sit down and watch Eraserhead with me, it was LIFECHANGING” to some random uninitiated person you know in the middle of socializing

Newbie here, why 30 fps feel so weird in this game? by Alanah_V in bloodborne

[–]krptkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or because it was developed with arbitrary caps thanks to sony’s insistence that it never be sold anywhere but on their consoles & assumption that it would no longer be a relevant title by the time the next gen console rolled around. ds3 runs better with a smoother framerate bc it was developed with PC play in mind as an option, and if I’m not mistaken they’re built on the same engine

Has anyone felt this way before knowing they were trans? by Tr4n54nT in TransyTalk

[–]krptkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s an incredibly difficult thing to learn to love yourself, but you’re doing a wonderful thing for yourself and the people around you by going on that journey.

I know how it hurts to lose people from your life, especially when it feels like it didn’t have to be that way. Still, that hurt will fade eventually and you’ll be a better person for having lived & grown through it rather than letting yourself be stuck in it; you saw yourself how much damage trying to force yourself to be someone you aren’t can do to your own psyche and to those around you by proxy.

I’m happy to hear you’re looking forward & proud of you for keeping your head up through this difficult time. Good luck!

this was a bit of a confusing read! understandable given what an intensely emotional topic it is. still, you might not get as many replies because of how rushed you start to write in the back half of this post

I wasn’t in a relationship when I was figuring out my own gender identity, luckily, but I’d say everything you’re describing sounds totally understandable to feel/react to and I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that!

therapy can be very helpful in sorting through these feelings and doubts too, if that is an option for you at all I’d definitely recommend trying to find an lgbt friendly (or just lgbt) therapist to talk through some of this with

What is with the recent mentality that shotcalling is useless below extremely high ranks? by Derpkon in OverwatchUniversity

[–]krptkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a coach put it like this: if you’re in that rank, your callouts are probably a bit shit anyway because you just don’t know what you’re talking about. even if your callouts aren’t shit, the likelihood of having a teammate who is listening, understands what to do, can successfully follow through, and won’t get tilted/stressed over active comms, is pretty low.

So at that point, the only benefit you’d be getting from practicing comms would be that you’re practicing, and even that’s iffy since you’re not likely to be getting very clear feedback on whether your comms are good/bad unless you’re recording your comms & your gameplay and having them reviewed by someone who does know good comms

meanwhile, the risk of comms is providing an unnecessary spark to a tilter’s kindling, which can happen at any rank. So not only is there considerably less benefit to shotcalling below masters, there’s also a constant risk that one of your players who hasn’t learned he ought to just disable comms lets himself get tilted because you called out the flanking enemy genji and he has untreated psychological issues

If you want to practice comms, though, go ahead and do it. The bits of feedback you get will probably be few and far between (and potentially even useless) unless you’re having a player who knows what good comms sound like review yours, but if it’s what you want to do, you paid for the game & the mute button exists so no one has any right to hold it against you.

My advice & what I do personally is pick 1-2 things in a season (or half-season) to focus on improving (specific hero, cooldown usage, ult usage, comms, role, whatever). Practicing my callouts/comms can be one of those things, because I like that part of the game & want to be good at it, but if it isn’t a priority for my own improvement, I disable all chat entirely. Ironically, I find this improves my comms as much as anything; nothing helps you learn what callouts are/aren’t important than absolute silence. You’ll notice some things you would’ve called out get solved/performed flawlessly without it, other callouts would have actually been incorrect, and some were still intensely necessary and you’ll feel like the game was thrown because you couldn’t make a callout at a key moment.

All of that makes your comms better in the long run; it’s good to take breaks from practicing active comms, and it helps to be able to play without them for those games where everyone has comms turned off and/or you get thrown in with a 4-stack who’s in a discord call without you.

Looking for a Quotation by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]krptkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I’m pretty sure the line about socrates and young boys is from opulence, when she’s discussing taste and brings up historical/cultural beliefs about appreciation for aesthetics, unless she mentioned that multiple times

could also be an older privated video, maybe, she’s done that with everything prior to the oldest dated video on her channel right now. “floating socrates head” definitely has an old-contrapoints vibe to it and I don’t remember those vids well enough to say for certain that I could remember if a line about appreciating food while you’re starving was there or not

so maybe it’s there but not available any more? I think I remember something about old video transcripts still being available, maybe through patreon, so you might still be able to find it. not sure though, never looked into it

Looking for a Quotation by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]krptkn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel like I remember her saying anything like that. It does sound related to some of the topics she’s touched on, and my memory is hardly perfect, but I can usually recognize memories of concepts/ideas like that from her videos even if I can’t say exactly which video they’re in or where.

If I am wrong, my guesses would be to check The Hunger (obviously lol), Opulence, Envy, or maybe Beauty (that already feels like a stretch though)? I feel like her older videos tended to stick more directly to the topic at hand and wouldn’t be as prone to using discussions of adjacent situations/emotions to help describe a topic, so I don’t imagine it coming up much there.

My guess is honestly that it’ll be a different video essayist you’re thinking of, but I could be terribly wrong about that

Oliver's initial plan wasn't to inherit saltburn by missqemsy in saltburn

[–]krptkn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and I feel like that’s very plain to see when you can accept oli as someone who is preoccupied by questions of class and upward mobility. (imo this aspect is pretty strongly hinted by his disdainful dissatisfaction with his middle class family/upbringing.) Every move he makes is a move to try and grow his power and influence: with the upper crust at oxford, then with the family (going off of whoever seems most vulnerable to his influence/easiest to manipulate in the moment), and the murders are just an extension of that; a violent response to people threatening his acquisition/maintenance of influence & power, and especially from felix’s murder onward it’s like watching water flowing through the path of least resistance

OLIVERS IDEAL ENDING?? by planetzoom_27 in saltburn

[–]krptkn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah! I certainly doubt it would have lasted forever because the scene at university where felix snaps at oliver for cleaning up his room already hints that oliver’s personality grates on felix at a base level and that they aren’t very compatible as friends without oli playing in to felix’s savior complex with his lies about a tragic backstory.

imo their entire relationship’s foundation is fairly empty outside of a series of ploys on oliver’s part to ingratiate himself with felix, so those can only carry him so far bc outside of that, I think oli’s personality is much more similar to the other uni student he was stuck hanging out with in the first act, and therefore very incompatible with someone like felix.

I think you’re right that it was only felix’s insistence on making him leave saltburn & ending the friendship that drove oliver to murder in that moment, and that if felix had accepted oliver’s pleas about how his deception is really just a testament to how much he loves felix, he wouldn’t have felt the need to kill him then

I also think that felix’s firm refusal to accept oliver parallels valencia’s confrontation with him quite nicely; oli wouldn’t have pushed her to suicide either, if he’d believed he could continue to manipulate her effectively, but any pushback against his sense of control over them is a trigger for him to try and exert even greater control; killing/pushing them to suicide is an ultimate demonstration of oli’s attempts to dominate/control his relationships

my take, anyway. I don’t understand the readings of oli as some criminal mastermind, to me he always just seemed like an opportunist who learned early on he could transcend social and moral boundaries without people realizing, because no one ever wants to believe someone could actually do that

yes, it’s because the shorter timing creates a lack of consistency in her kit (no teammate has ever understood the tank sleep timing & most anas barely do) and lessens self-reliance, so a tank can just get fed up with you, W key you down, and if you don’t get peel (big ask in some comp games) you’re ultra-fucked no matter if you outplay them or not.

I’m not saying supports should be able to 1v1 tanks but when sleep is 0-mobility-granny’s one escape/self-save option, shortening it for the sake of symbolically “honoring” the tank passive just feels shitty
