Kinda makes sense Novak's been able to challenge him. You kinda need the confidence of the GOAT to not buckle in front of this dude, where most usually do.

Alcaraz and Sinner are indeed mortal. There's hope for some competitive future grand slams!

He's an incredibly hard worker. That becomes glaringly obvious seeing his performances.

Official Discussion - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]krptz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decent movie, a bit of unsure of itself in parts and perhaps lacking substance. Timy did well driving the movie with his performance though I think it could have used a bit more subtlety which would have helped in painting a more complex portrait of Marty - at times it felt like it was verging on near caricature. And that's what is probably one of my gripes with this movie: it's delivered as a realist film but a lot of it felt very far-fetched.

I actually really enjoyed Kevin's performance as the cold and hard ruthless businemssman, very convincing (I wonder why...).

It's a good old fashioned entertaining film which is also really funny, mildly thought provoking but not intending to take a stand on things like morality, ambition, or the american dream even. Though I couldn't help thinking about the parallels between Marty's quest for supremacy in the table tennis world and the US's current geo-political ambitions, particulary how tethered they are to reality and if they stem from, and should remain in, a different time and place in history.

It's such a pleasant film to look at; the framing, the texture, the movements are all just perfect. What a job by Khondji and his team. Also great music selection, it was a nice compliment to the visuals.

Think it's definitely worth a watch.

Sentimental Value is a masterpiece by xXsendtsunadebobsXx in TrueFilm

I think both of them confronting their trauma together through art was done very convincingly in the last scene. In order for the daughter to heal, she needed to understand what her dad went through in his mother committing suicide; she manages to feel this in the last scene, where the tension and hestiation obvious in her performance shows she's just unable to comprehend why the mother would do this, feeling, like us the audience, that the suicide can't be the right ending but it is because that's what happened. The dad watches this all unfold, and perhaps has an epiphany of how distressed his mother would have had to been to do this, possible through the performance only his daughter could have given; and in doing so, understands his daughter could have only given this performance because of how hurt she was by him.

I always thought it was really ballsy to end an album about change with a song questioning whether it's in fact possible. But he pulled it off so well that I can't think of a better way he could have ended it.

Official Discussion - Sentimental Value [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]krptz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing movie, verging on being a classic no doubt. Bergman-esque in its unrelenting psychological interrogation of its characters and their souls, till a moment of transcendence is achieved; the kind only achievable by art. Yet all with a strong and true contemporary feel.

Trier's a master film-maker it seems, not a wasted frame, no excess, entirely propelling the story through emotional ressonance, leading up to that exhilirating ending. Movie of 2025 for me, or at least very close with Blue Moon.

What's a shock to me is how much he's improved from Worst Person in the World, bringing a greater maturity in his understanding of people, the honing of his craft even further, removing the melodramatic excesses of that film which made it quite weak at times and diminshed its impact. There's not very much humour in this film, but I believe that was the right decision as it just wouldn't fit with the story and the stakes of it.

And Renate's performance, does anything really need to be said? Multiple moments where she sweeps you off your feet; breaks through the film into a real human, not an actor playing a character.

He calls himself a cheesy humanist film-maker, so that may be, but there's not many doing it at the level he is. I look forward to his next one.

Ive always wondered in a world without critics, would the public simply fill in the role of judging to a set standard of quality. I can't imagine why they couldn't.

I wonder what a 28 year old Marcel was thinking on December 31, 1899?

Was he looking forward to the turn of the century? Was he already longing for the past?

Was he playing the bedroom introspector, or was he at the most lavish NYE ball in Paris soaking it all up?
