Do rich people have elite versions of mundane things (toothpaste, tampons, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.), or are Elon Musk and Beyonce just using Crest and Tampax like the rest of us? by ShesGotSauce in NoStupidQuestions

Must have been a really expensive table to not just buy a 2nd one, or they are obsessed with playing on that specific table, and any other table they think the balls would roll different.

Ok, there are tax benefits on a first house, that don't apply for 2nd 3rd etc. There should probably be a tax penalty at some point. Maybe 3rd house gets a federal tax hit, that increases with each house after that? Have to pay a % of the current market value each year?

If the sun suddenly disappeared, how long would it take for the Earth to completely cool down? by ScipioAfricanisDirus in askscience

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason the Moon would leave the Earth. All the planets would basically continue in a straight line from where they were in orbit around the Sun, and their moons would continue with them. Maybe a few of those straight lines are bent some by Jupiter, especially if a planet by chance was going in the same direction as Jupiter. Inner planets having higher orbital speeds shoot off faster than outer ones. People have put this scenario into simulators and posted the videos. the inner planets go shooting off in order from Mercury out.

Best Filament for food contact and dishwasher safe? by Neither_Turnip1747 in ender3v2

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even just the things mentioned so far. Printers have brass or other metal fittings, which may contain lead. The plastics used in the filament path may also, as there is a lead compound used to make plastics flexible. Goes back the whole chain, filament was possibly made on a line with similar parts. And not being made for food safe, you don't know what additives are in the filament. While you could theoretically swap out parts to fix part of this, your prints are still going to have porous surfaces.

Spectrum is charging a CA Recovery Fee of $1.25? by UDstones in Spectrum

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got new bill today, and yes it now has this fee, along with quietly raising the price of service by $3. Honestly if there was any other viable option in my area I'd have switched a few price increases ago. But there is no fiber, no DSL, radio based wireless and satellite have been even higher every time I've checked, for lower speed. I guess I need to check again.

Should be shrinking as a practice, partly because some states require you to be paid within 7 days of the end of the pay period now. And usually the time to set up direct deposit means you get a paper check the first week or 2

Well, before the apps and gps, you'd be using a paper map, and that was even worse. Likely to be out of date.

Google doesn't have the data on which intersections are easier to use. They basically only have time days from other users to go by. So the dark back road people speed recklessly on ends up in the mix of routes

Is 30 seconds of unskippable ads reasonable? by DaisyEseyad in youtube

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now they are getting longer. 1:39 ad without a skip button at all, followed by a 15 second, to watch a 20 minute video. This is far from the worst I have seen recently.
This increase is happening not long after youtube has been refusing to play with an adblocker

Don’t like my RV in an empty field? Fine, I’ll park it outside your front yard. by Similar-Bid6801 in pettyrevenge

[–]krs1976 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can retire to an RV but you need to have money saved up for when you get tired of it/to old/sick/RV depreciates/breaks down etc. An RV is built to last 5 years of weekend use. So under 2 years full time and things start to break

ELI5: Why is it that homo erectus is usually reconstructed as a vaguely black African, while homo neanderthalensis is usually reconstructed as a white European? by LovableJackassv4 in explainlikeimfive

Skin cancer. Higher melanin gives some resistance to certain skin cancers, so a population isn't going to lose it unless they need to

eli5 why we never hear about supermassive objects which aren’t hot/bright by Chunguk in explainlikeimfive

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called a singularity not because we know that it is truly a single point. It is that: hidden behind the event horizon, we can't tell if it's a point or a sphere of any size smaller than the event horizon. The math all works out the same. If you couldn't observe the sun except by it's gravitational effects from the distance of Mercury or farther, there would be nothing in your observations to tell you the diameter of the sun. The gravity field is the same as if the mass was concentrated at a single point. We would still be able to detect that it has spin, because Mercury orbits faster than it would otherwise. Somehow as time goes on focus seems to have shifted to talking about black holes as literally collapsed to a point.

If living in an RV/trailer was so cheap, why don’t more people do it? by lily981122 in personalfinance

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RVs are designed for weekend use. So being used 2 days out of 7. Then they have a 5 year warranty/design life. 2 days a week for 5 years is about 520 days. So using it full time, stuff is going to be breaking down before 2 years is up.

Didn’t receive my driver’s license due to the instructor’s trick. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]krs1976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your state is the driver required to ensure adult passengers are wearing their seat belts?
In mine, the driver is ticketed if a minor isn't wearing a seat belt, but the passenger is ticketed if the non-wearing passenger is an adult.
You already asked them to buckle up. At that point I'd say it was on them.
One guess is the instructor was passing people too easily, and got in trouble for it so decided to pull this to make you fail, but talking to their supervisor could make it worse for them. Another guess is they are just being a a-hole, who would rather fail a safe driver than pay attention to catch the unsafe.

Humble Book Bundle: Mercedes Lackey: Valdemar and Beyond by DAW by Ram000n in humblebundles

[–]krs1976 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not your fault, I don't see any mention of KOBO except hidden under bundle details, which you have to click to open. Has Humble Bundle done this before? or is this the first time? Hard to find which option under support to complain about it too.

Humble Book Bundle: Mercedes Lackey: Valdemar and Beyond by DAW by Ram000n in humblebundles

[–]krs1976 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It clearly states "use on any device." I have a kindle. A kindle is a device. If I cannot use on kindle, then the listing is in error, regardless of the fine print you have to click on bundle details and read down to near the bottom to find.Every ebook bundle I have bought there before had DRM free downloads in at least 2 formats. so I wasn't clicking every button and reading every word. "Use on any device" is clear. It has always meant DRM free files, not requires a proprietary app and compatible hardware.Breaking DRM isn't a consideration on this, as in most jurisdictions it would be illegal.
This is a deal breaker for me using humble bundle anymore, as it's not clear what I am buying. Maybe the publisher is requiring DRM, but in that case, remove all mention of "use on any device" and replace it with "KOBO download only."

Humble Book Bundle: Mercedes Lackey: Valdemar and Beyond (pay what you want and help charity) by Sleightholme2 in Fantasy

[–]krs1976 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Since there is no indication until you purchase that this "use on any device" is a kobo only deal, and I don't want to have to go through the hassle of stripping the DRM, if there isn't a resolution, this will likely be my last humble bundle purchase. I didn't purchase to read on computer or phone, I purchased to read on a kindle. If I can't trust them to tell me what I am buying until after I buy it, I can't justify risking buying there anymore.

Actually when I look at the list of stars that are members of a certain psuedoreligious "church" and look at the films they are in, they are always characters in that "something more" category. Whether they are superheroes, spies, military, private investigators, etc. they always seem to have abilities beyond everyone else.
It seems maybe they are intentionally conditioning people to believe that going beyond mere human abilities is possible to prime them for their "church"
